Did on the 22ª of Seper. 1742. Agree with the Widow Mary Jenifon That Shee Should Move out the fence Againft Land Set of to her ye Sd Widw. as her Thirds Lying South of ye high Way or Contry Road So as to Inclofe Two pieces of Land, (Said pieces of Land Not to be alinated from ye Sd Thirds) vizt. To Move out the front fence which is between ye Land of Benj". Haftings which he bo' of ye Towns Comtee Againft his Land formerly Bacons, and Land he bot. of Sd Comtee. Againft ye Land in his Pofsefsion belonging to ye Widw. At a Meeting of ye Selectmen At ye Houfe of M' Jonas Bond on the 14th Day of March 1742 The Selectmen Appointed the Sur- veyers their Refpective Diftricts The Diftrects to be as they were Laft Year Agreeable to the plan on file. Except Elbo hill Lane & ye High Way from Sd Lane to Walthan added to the Weft Diftrict. The Selectmen Appointed Jofeph Harrington the Weft Diftrict, Sam1. Benjamin the Eaft Diftrict & Nath1. Coollidge the North Diftrict. Ordred the Clerk to give Each Survey" a plan of yr Diftrict. which was done.


At Sd Meeting There was Two Perfons Appeared to take the Widw Webb to board vizt Nath Coollidge & Jofiah Stearns, who both Offred to take ye sd Wid". for Nine Shillings p' Week (old Tenner) for a Year. And the Sd Wid". to have the Benefit of her own Labour Extraordnary Charges to be Allowed for. Agreed the Widw. Take her Choice wch of ye Two places to Live At, and the Perfon whofe houfe She choofes to live at to be the the perfon to take and board her for one year from ye 7th Inftant upon ye Condition Above Mentioned. The Selectmen defired Mefs Jonas Bond & Daniel Whitney to go to Sd Wid". to know her mind wch of ye two places abovesd She choofe to Live at. And Acquaint the clerk of her Choice. The Sd Widw. The Selectmen on ye 18th. of March 1742. At Eben' Chenrys Requeft Preambulated on the Lines of ye pieces of Land he bot of the Town's Comtee: vizt. The firft peace lying above ye Clay pitts. the Line begins at ye Northeaft Corner of Sam1 Prentices Land, (called Balls place) Runing parrel wth. Sd Prentices North wall Seven Rods. and at the End of ye Seven Rods the Town Way is there Eleven paces Wyde, a Rock being in Sd Way. Then Runing fifteen Rods, at ye End of wch the Sd Way is Eleven paces wide, then turning and Runing on a Slant Line to a Rock at Sd Chenrys fence, five Lenths above or Weft of ye Spring (commonly called Shattucks Spring) The other piece Lying Weft of Prentices Land abovesd. the Line to Run from Sd Prentices Northweft Corner Straight to ye Corner of ye Wall of ye Sd Chenry and where ye Wall is Set up y ye wall to Stand as it now is. the Way being abot. Twelve paces wide againft this piece. One more piece of Six Rods Mentioned in Sd Chenrys Deed, The Sd Chenry Refigned up again to the Town it Difcomoding ye Town way where it Lay. And the Selectmen Agreed that ye Said Chenry in Exchaing & in Lew thereof Should Straighten his front fence againft the Way South of his houfe So as to take in Six Rods their. The Exchang is Entred on ye back of his Deed. and Signed.


The Same day Doct. Convers & Sam1 Hager Defired the Selectmen to Preambulat with them. And ye Sd Doct. to bring out his fence to ye Line the Town's Commtee: Made with M' John Brown, wch Line is ye North bounds of ye High Way the Sd High Way y' Againft ye sd Doc". Land is four Rods & half.


Said Sam1 Hager To Remove Out his front fence to ye Line made by ye Aforesd Comtee. wth Isaac Holdin & ye sd Hager and which is the North bounds of Sd Way y'. the Sd Way againft the front of sd Hagers Land is four Rods and half wide.


March ye 28th: 1743. The Selectmen Preambulated on ye Line againft ye Land of Chriftopher Grant Jona" Stone & Eben' Thatcher on ye South Side of ye High Way, and Town way And ye Said Stone Grant & Thatcher to move out their fence to the Line as Mentioned in the Report of a Comtee. Accepted by ye Town & Recorded Page 241 in this Book Said Thatcher to Run from ye End of ye 13 Rods mentioned in Sd Report to the Corner of his Orchard the Line a little bowing out.


The Sd Thatcher to move his fence on ye North Sd of sd Way againft his Land by Stephen Sawins to ye North Bounds of sd High Way as Mentioned in ye Aforesd Recorded Report The Eaft Line to be parrel with the Eaft Line of his Land yt Ly's back.

The Selectmen having Recd a Precipt from Authority Requiring them forth with to Caufe the Inhats. of ye Town Quallifyed to vote in the Choice of A Reprefentative to be Afsembled in Ord' to Elect & Depute a perfon to Serve for and Reprefent them at a great & General Court Appointed to be Convened held & kept &c on ye 25 of May Current at ye Court houfe in Boston. In Obferv- ance whereof Ordred the Clerk forth with to Ifue Out a warrant to ye Conftable to warn ye Freeholdrs. and other Inhab's. of Watertown who are Quallifyed to Vote in ye Choice of A Reprefentative to Afsemble at ye Publick Meeting houfe in Sª Town on Munday the Ninth day of May Currant at one of ye Clock After Noone. Then and there to Elect and Depute a Meet Perfon to Serve for and Reprefent them at ye Great & Gen11. To know the mind of ye Town whether yy will Accept of Jofiah Stearns the prefent Conftable to Serve alfo in the Room of Thomas Saltmarfh who was chofen Conftable Laft March Meeting the Sª Saltmarth having Agreed with the Sd Stearns in cafe the Town Accept of him. But in cafe the Town Refufe to accept of sd Stearns to Serve in the Room of ye sd Saltmarth then to Choofe a nother Conftable.


2. To choofe the Prefent Survey's of ye High way's to be Col- lectors of ye Grant Made by ye Town at y' Annual Meeting Laft for ye Mending of ye Highways &c this p'fent year (the choofing of them Collectors being Ommitted at ye said Anual meeting)


3. To hear ye Report of ye Committee who were Chofen to Difpofe of ye Common Lands in Sd Town How far yy have pro- ceeded in Sª Affair and for ye Town to Act y' minds with Relation to sd Report. alfo to hear what ye Sd Comtee. has to Lay before the Town wth Refpect to ye Lands not yet difpofed off Relating to ways & ye Training field. and ye Town to Manifeft their Minds wth Relation there unto.


4. To hear the Petition of Stephen Sawin praying Liberty for ye hanging of a Gate or Gates on ye Town ways Near M' Eben' Thatchers as Set forth in Sª Petition and for the Town to Manni- feft y' Minds Refpecting the Same.

To know the mind of ye Town whether they will by a Comtee: Petition his Majesty's Juftices of ye Court of General Sefsions of ye peace to be holden At Cambridge within & for ye County of Middx. on ye 3ª Tuefday of May Currant to make more Certain the Bounds of ye Publick Way in Watertown againft the Mill Crick both above and below the Mill and Againft David Learneds Land North of his Mill houfe that Difputes for time to Come may be prevented. this Article being Defired to be Incerted by Petition to ye Selectmen by Sundry of ye Inhabts. of Watertown.


A Warrant was Isued Out Accordingly. At' J Mason Cler.


At A General Town Meeting of the Freeholdrs. and other Inhabts. of Watertown Quallifyed to Vote in the Choice of A Reprefentative Regulerly Afsembled on the Ninth Day of May 1743 At the Publick Meeting houfe in Sd Town.


The Inhabitants Did then and there Elect & Depute M' Jonas Bond to Serve for and Reprefent them In the Sefsion or Sefsions of ye Great and General Court or Afsembly Appointed to be Convened Held and Kept for His Majesty's Service at the Court Houfe in Boston upon Wednefday the Twenty fifth Day of this Inftant May.

Cool- lidge Sam1 Benjamin & Jofeph Harrington the Prefent Surveyers of ye High Ways to be the Collectors of ye hundred Pounds Granted for the Mending of the High Ways &c this Prefent Year they following the Same Method & Directions, which have been fol- lowed and practiced in Sd Affair for the two. Years Laft paft. And the Vote Past in the Affirmative.


Then the Commtees Report was Laid before ye Town and Red bearing date the 5th. May 1743.


And the Vote was put, Whether the Town do Accept of the Commtees. Report now Laid before the Town and Confidred relating to Some of the Common Land, And that the Town do Grant and Confirm the Refpective pieces of Land Mentioned in Sd Reporte To the Perfons Refpectively wch are Named in the Sd Reporte their heirs and Afsigns, Agreable to ye Report and upon the Conditions Mentioned in Sd Report, And that the Report be Recorded in the Town Records the Conditions there in Mentioned being firft fulfilled. And the Vote paft in ye Affirmative.

The Petition of Stephen Sawin was then Red to ye Town pray- ing for Liberty to Set up Gates or Barrs acrofs the Town way's Near to Eben' Thatchers. And after Confideration there on the Vote was put Whether it is the mind of ye Town to grant the prayer of ye sd Petition So far that ye sd Petitioner have Liberty to Set up gates or Barrs Agreable to ye prayer of his Petition for this p'fent Year. And the Vote paft in the Affirmative.


Then the Town Voted not to Act on the fifth Article in the Warrant.


The Sixth Article was Red and Confidred, and the Vote was put Whether it is the mind of ye Town, That the Towns Commtee. Chofen to Agree with Perfons what they Should give for Land Lying to ye ways Againft the front of y' Lands where it may be Spared, View that way North of M' John Hunts Houfe Lot wch Ly's North of M' Thorntons Houfe and If any Land y" may be Spared to Agree wth M' Jnº Hunt what he Shall give for ye Same and Lay it before ye Town for their Confirmation. Then the Eight Article in ye Warrant was Red to ye Town and after Debate thereon the Vot was put, Whether it is the Mind of ye Town To Choofe a Committee to Make Application to the Court of General Sefsions of the peace for Liberty for ye Errecting Shops on the Contry Road on ye South Side of ye River above the Bridge in Sd Town So as not to Difcommode the Road. And the Vote paft in the Affirmative.


Voted and Chofe M' Jonas Bond & M' John Hunt to be a Com- mittee to Make Application to the Court of General Sefsions of ye peace On the Affair Abovesd.


The Ninth Article in the Warrant was then Red And After it was Confidred and Debated on ye Vote was put.

We the Subfcribers the Comtee. Chofen and Appointed by Sd Town to Difpofe of y' Common Land Agreable to y' Vote paft at y' Meeting on ye Seventh Day of March Laft and to Make Reporte of y' Doings in Sª Affair to the Town for their Confirmation. Agree to Report as followeth vizt.


According to the Truft Repofed in us, We Appointed a Day for the Difpofal of Some of the Common Land vizt. The Islands (So Called) in the River by the fish Wares. The piece of March & Upland Near Eben' Thatchers, Alfo ye peace of upland Adjoining to the Bank of ye River South of M' Galcums Land And gave Seafonable and Publick Notice thereof by Setting up Notifications und' our hands at the Three Publick houfes in Sd Town of ye time and place Appointed. And upon the Day Appointed wch was the 2 Ist of April Laft, the Comtee: Meet at the houfe of David Coollidge yt being the place Appointed in the Notifications where Sundry p'fons Meet the Commtee. And After confiderable waiting to give People Oppertunity to come together, The Notifications was Pub- lickly read which Enferted that the Difpofition of sd Lands was to the Higheft bidder Agreable to a vote of the Town.


After which the Largest of ye Abovesd Islands Containing About five Acres & a half, was by the Comtee. put up for Perfons to bid upon, And After Sundry p'fons had bid for the Same it Appeared to the Comtee that M' Joseph Harrington of Watertown abovesd was the higheft bidder who bid for Sd Island One hundred Sixty three pounds one Shilling old Tenner.

The Next piece of Land the Commtee put up was the Smalleft of sd Islands containing by Estimation Abot. one Acres and a Quarter, And After Sundry p'fons had bid for the Same it Ap- peared to the Comtee: that M' Nath1. Norcrofs of Sd Town was the Higheft bidder for Sª Smal Island who bid Seventy two pounds old Tenner for Sd Smal Island.


The Next piece of Land put up by ye Comtee. was the piece of Marfh and upland Near Eben' Thatchers containing Abt. Two Acres and a half by Estimation, and After Sundry p'fons bidding therefor, it appeared to the Comtee. that M' Stephen Sawin of Sd Town was the higheft bidder who bid for Sd piece of marfh and upland Two hundred and fifty one pounds old Tener.


The Laft piece put up by the Comtee was the abovesd upland Adjoining to the bank of the River Containing abot two Acres and After Several Perfons had bid for the Same it Appeared to the Commtee. That Israel Meed of sd Town was the higheft bidder who bid for Sd piece of Land fifty pounds three Shillings.


Whereupon We the Sª Comtee: do agree to Reporte further as follows, vizt. That the Sd Town of Watertown Agreable to y' Vote abovesd. Do Grant And Confirm ye Abovesd Island of Marfh con- taining five Acres and half by Estimation be the Same more or lefs Unto the abovesd Joseph Harrington his heirs and Afsigns for ever, He the sd Harrington paying into the Town Treafurey for the Ufe of Sd Town the Sum of One hundred Sixty three pounds one Shillings old Tenner upon the Sd Towns Granting and Con- firming Sd piece of Land or Island unto him &c or give bond with a Sufficiant Surety upon Lawfull Intereft for the Same to the Town Treafurer and Succefsors for the ufe of sd Town.


That the Sd Town do alfo grant and Confirm the abovesd Little Island Containing by Estimation One Acres and a Quarter be the Same more or lefs unto the abovesd Nath1. Norcrofs his heirs and Afsigns for ever He the Sd Nath1. the Accomodating the Watering place there. the Said Weft line is Rods in length and about one Rod Eaft of ye Spring North- erly by the Town way Leading to the River the Sd Way to be left as follows vizt. At the Bank Next the River there the way to be four Rods & three paces wyde and at ye End of Eight Rods weft from Sd Bank there Sd Way to be left three Rods and three paces wide (this wydth Referved for ye Accomodateing Landing at the River) then the Sd Way Slants off gradually till it comes to one Rode and half, and So the Remainder of ye Way againft Sª piece of Land to be Left one Rod and half wyde. or however Sd piece of Land is other wife Bounded or Reputed to be bounded. He the Sª Stephen Sawin paying there for in to the Town Treafurey the Sum of Two hundred and fifty one pounds old Ten' for the ufe of Sd Town when the Sd Town Grants and Con- firms Sª Land to him his heirs and Afsigns or give Bond wth a Sufficiant Surty upon Lawfull Intereft for the Same to the Town Treafurer and Succefsors for ye Ufe of ye sd Town.


That the Sd Town do grant and Confirm unto the abovesd Israel Mead his heirs and Afsigns for ever the above Sd piece of Upland Adjoyning to the bank of ye River as abovesd. Containing by Estimation two Acres be the Same more or lefs, and Bounded Northerly And Wefterly by ye Town Way Southerly by the River Bank Eafterly by Land of Sam1. The Selectmen do not Object againft the Said perfons Renewing their Licences for this prefent year.


Ordred the Treafurer to pay to Elifha Coollidge Eighteen Shillings old Tenner for a great Chair for ye Schoolhoufe.

At a Meeting of ye Selectmen on ye 29th. of July 1743. At this Meeting the Selectmen took An Acct of black birds & Squirrels heads &c that they had Recd in Since ye 22ª of Nov. Laft. And After Counting the Same it Appeared that there had been brot in 124 flag'd Black birds heads & 32 Not flag'd. 281 Rats 23 gray & 209 ground Squirrells wch Amounted to ye Sum of Ten pounds 4 / 4 old Tenner.

The Selectmen Signed An Ord' to ye Treaf to pay out of ye Laft Afsefm'. To ye Revd M' Storer {200 as it is due. To Nath1. Coollidge Nine pounds. in part for ye Wid". Webb. Thirty five pounds 19 / 3 to thofe p'fons ye Town are indebt to. alfo to Richd King Six pounds. and to ye Treaf' himfelf Twenty pounds.


Alfo to pay to Nath1. Harrington out of ye Intereft Money Appropriated for ye School ye Sum of forty five pounds old Tenner.


There being prefent Neceafsity of plank to be got for ye great Bridge to prevent danger & prefentmt. the Selectmen Agre'd that M' Jon". Bemis on of ye Selectmen go as Soon as may be to ye Saw Mills to Se If any plank can be procured, and if y' are any to be had to procure a Load to be brot Down forth with to ye Bridge. and if y' be none, to Acquaint the Selectmen, yt other Meafures may be taken forth with.
