The Selectmen having made Inquirey whether money could be got to procure what Ammunition is wanting for a Town Stock According to Law, and it being not likely to git in Money So as to Anfwer this End. And y' being a Necessity of procuring Abt. II0 lb of powder & 200 lb of bullets. to make up ye Town Stock According to the Law. And where as ye Law Impowers ye Select- men in Such Cafe to Make Afsefmt on ye Town to procure a Town Stock.


Accordingly ye Selectmen Agree'd to Afsefs on ye Ratable Poles & Estates in Watertown the Sum of £70 old Ten'. forth with to be Collected and paid to ye Selectmen &c (Agreeable to ye Directions of ye Law,) to purchafe So much Ammunifion as is wanting to make good the Town Stock Agreeable to Law.

At this Meeting ye Selectmen gave their Confent that the Tavern keepers & Retailers who were Laft year Sd Renew y' Licence for this year.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at the Houfe of Jona" Bemis on ye 20th of July 1744. Sufanna Murch being und' very poor and Low Circumftances having Neither houfe or home to go to, Made Application to ye Selectmen for Some reliefe und'. her difficulty, She being very loth to be Chargable is defireous of doing w She can to Maintain her Self and Child yt is wth her, And hopes if She could have a Room She might with Some Smal help git a lively hood.


The Selectmen taking her Cafe into confideration, thot. it their duty to do Some thing for her, And Accordingly Agree'd wth. M' Jona". Bemis to let her come into his houfe wch Stands Empty, and Defired M' Bemis & M' Jofeph Harrington two of ye Selectmen to provid her a Load of wood and some meat and Some Meal for her prefent Subfistance till She can take care to provide (if able) for her Self, and they to be Satisfyed for what they do by ye Town, they to give An Acct to ye Selectmen.


The Selectmen Ordred ye Clerk to Isue out warrants to ye Conftables forth with to warn the Perfons hereafter Named forth- with to depart out of Watertown ye Selectmen refufing to Accept of ym to be Inhabts. in Sd Town. viz. Elizh Hacker & her Daughter Elizh who refides at ye houfe of Capt Thos Homans. Joseph Heirs a Child at W" Wards Honore Rook who Refides at Nath1. Cool- lidges Mary Heffery who refides at John Haftings who came all of them from Bofton Laft in ye County of Suffolk. Lyda Gage who Refides at Joseph Child who came from Wefton, and Sufanna Murch a Child of Wm & Sufanna Murch wch came from Cambridge Some time in May Laft.


Whereas Sundry Timber is Laid on the High way between ye Great Bridg & Tho Saltmarth whereby ye way is Incumbred Agreed to prefent the perfons y' Laid Sd Timber there, at Concord Cort, if it be not Removed before.

1744. August 31st. At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at M' Jonas Bonds. At Sd Meeting the Selectmen Appointed Joseph Mason Esq' & M' Jonas Bond to Attend the Court of Sefsions at Concord on the firft Wednefday of Sep' Next in Order to take care relating to ye Prefentmt made Againft Elifh Fullum for Laying of Timber in the High Way in Watertown. And to Summon Such Evidences as is Necefsary. the Selectmen Appointed to Meet Next fryday at four of the Clock in Order to Stake out the place to Set the pound upon.


Sep'. 7. 1744. The Selectmen Met in the Town Way by the piece of Land belonging to Nath' Harris Esq' Called the two Acres. in Order to View a place for the Pound. And the Selectmen Agreed and Staked out a place to Set the pound on in the Sd Town Way. The place Staked out is two Rods Square, Leaving the Town way aforesd fourteen paces wide againft the front of ye Pound, the Southeafterly Corner of the pound to be at the North- wefterly Corner of Justice Harris two Acres aforesd. The Select- men Apprehending that the old Stuff of the prefent Pound will do Again, provided that it be Sett on Cells. Agreed Accordingly wth M' Joseph Harrington to procure the Cells for Sd Pound as Soon as May be wth Convenanice.

Town, The Selectmen are Informed alfo that there is one Jane Oglesbee (Ales Coomes) a poor Widow Woman come to refide in Sd Watertown She Came Laft from Waltham in the County of Middx. She came to Said Watertown the Beginning of Sepr Laft and Now Refides in the Dwelling houfe of Sam Cooke of Said Watertown, the Circumftances of sd perfons being Such that the Selectmen Refufe to Accept of them to be Inhabts. in Sd Watertown. And therefore Ordred the Clerk to Isue out a War- rant to Warne the Sª Dennis & Oglefbee (ales Cooms) forth with to Depart out of Watertown and no longer to Refide there in.


A Warrant Was Isued out Directed to Edw Harrington Conftable which was Returned. And Caution Entred at the Sefsions Att Charlftown Decr. 19th: 1744.

To Hear the Petition of David Sanger praying that the Town wld Grant to Him a Smal piece of Land Lying between the Town way and the River againft His Dwelling Houfe for Such Con- fideration as Shall be agreed upon. And for the Town to Act their pleaf'. thereon.

The Petition of M' Jonas Bond and others praying that the Town would Abate Some of their Intreft on their bonds given to ye Town was Red. and After debate thereon. The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of the Town to grant the prayer of ye Petition. and the Vote paft in the Negative.


Upon the Motion of Henry Spring jun' made to the Town To Abate part of his Intreft due to ye Town, upon Sd Motion


The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town to Abat to Sd Spring the Intreft of His fifty Eight pound bond to the Eleventh day of December Laft which is fifty three Shillings and 6ª old Tenner. And the Vote paft in the Affirmative.


Voted and Granted the Sum of fifty three Shillings and 6ª to make good what was Abated of M' Henry Springs In- treft.

Voted that the Selectinen take a View of ye Land prayed for by Sd Sanger and Report to the Town at the Adjournmt of this Meeting what they think proper for the Town to Do relating to ye pray' of Sd Petition. Then


Voted and Adjourned this Meeting to fryday the fifteenth of March Inftant at three of the Clock Afternoon to this place.

We the Subfcribers the Committee Appointed by Sd Town to Agree wth perfons what yy Sld give for Land Lying to ye ways againft the front of y' Lands &c Meet And Agreed wth Nath Harris Esquire, That He move out his fence againft the Town way Lead- ing by his piece of Land caled the two Acres So far as to Rang wth the front Line of ye piece of Land Staked out for the pound to be Errected on and to Run from Sd piece of Land for ye Pound aforesd Southward on a parrelell Line with the front Line aforesd Twenty three Rods to a Stake three paces Weft from his wall as it Now Stands the Town way being their Sixteen paces wide and from thence to the Corner of his Land a little Rounding which Line Inclofes abt Thirty one Rods of Land He to pay therefor into the Town Treafurey for the ufe of ye Town the Sum of three Pounds Seventeen Shillings and Six pence old Ten'. when the Town Confirms the Same to him.


At the Same time Agreed wth M' Jonas Bond That he move out his front fence in Said Lane to the front Line of the piece of Land for ye Pound as aforesd And to Run parrelell with Sd front Line Nothward to his fence to A Notch Cut in a Rayle in his fence as it Now Stands, And He the Sd Bond to Leave out to the Said Way a Small piece of Land at ye Bend of the Wall for the better Accomodating of ye Sd Way, the Land Inclofed by sd Line is abt Seven Rods of ground befides allowance for what he is to Leave out as aforeSd. Agreed that He the Sd Bond Should pay into the Town Treafurey therefor, for the ufe of ye Town the Sum of Seventeen Shillings & Six pence old Tenner when the Town Shall Confirm the Same to him.
