The Publick Way from Jonathan Churches to the Meeting houfe, an the Town Way from the Meeting houfe Northward to Cambridge line Near Thos Wellingtons and all the Town Ways which are included within Sd Bounds.


Samuel Stratton Surveyer his District to be as follow's vizt. The Country Road from Cambridge Line to Ebenez" Goddards and the Town Way by Sam1 Perrys, the Town way by the Buring place, and the Town way Leading by Sam1. Jenifons.


John Brown Surveyer his Diftrict to be as follow's vizt.


The Country Road from Waltham Line So far as Ebenez" God- dards and all the Publick Roads and Town ways on the South Side thereof.


John Taynter Surveyer his Diftrict to be as follow's vizt.

The Publick Road from the Meeting houfe to Waltham Line Near Jofhua Warrins, the Town way Leading from Sd Road by his own houfe to Waltham Line, and the Town way Leading under the Rocks (So Called) down to W Goddings Diftrect.


At Sd Meeting the Selectmen Agreed wth M' John Hastings to take and keep Mary Maddocks and her Child which is at the Charge of ye Town for one year from the firft day of April Next vizt. the woman at three Shillings and Six pence # week and the Child at three Shillings Six pence { week, Sd Haftings to have the woman work, And to be Allowed for Extraordnary trouble Occationed by Sicknefs or lamenefs. if any Such providence Should happen.


The Selectmen alfo Agree'd wth Nath1. Coollidge to take and Board Margret Warrin who is at the Charge of ye Town for the Space of one Year from ye firft day of April Next At Six Shillings & Six pence per week Extroadry Charges to be Allowed.


Ordred the Treafurer to pay unto M' Benjamin Haftings out of ye Money belonging to Watertown before divided great Bridg. that is in the (then) Conftables hands the Sum of Three pounds Eleven Shillings, it being for work 3-II- .. done at the great Bridge

In Obfervance thereof. Ordred the Clerk to Isue out Warrants to warn the Freeholders &c of Watertown to Afsemble at the Publick Meeting houfe in Sd Town on fryday the 23d day of May Currant at one of ye Clock after Noone. Then and there to Elect and Depute one or more perfons to Serve for and Reprefent them in a great and General Court or Afsembly Appointed to be Con- vened held & keept for his Majs. Service at ye Court houfe in Bofton upon Wedenfday the 28th of May Currant.

I. For the Town to hear wt the Hon'ble ye Court of General Sefsions of ye peace for the County of Middx. has Acted relating to ye Publick Ways in Watertown. And in Cafe there be Any more Land Lying by ye Publick Ways or other Ways in Sd Town y' the Town Shall See Meet Should be Difpofed off then to Choofe and Impower A Committee in the Towns Name & behalf to Difpofe of ye Same, or in any oth' Method to be Difpofed of by ye Town as they Shall think moft proper. Sª Commtee. alfo to take New bonds of thofe perfons that bot. Land of ye Towns Comtee. formerly. And further to Act evrything Necefsary in Sd Affair.


2. To hear what the Comtee chofen to Lett ye Banks &c by ye River has to relate to ye Town referring to the Land that was Left out by ye Alteration of ye Publick Ways by M' Ebenez" Thorntons Houfe. And for the Town to Manifeft their minds whether they will Lett or Sell the Same.


3. To Choofe Tything Men to Make up ye Vacancy there being None Sworne


4. To know the Mind of ye Town whether they will have the Meeting houfe in Sd Town New Setted (it being defired by a Number of ye Inhabts. of sd Town who Signifyed y' Defire in writting to ye Selectmen) And to Choofe a Comtee to Seat ye Same Agreable to ye Directions that Shall be given them by the Town.


5. To hear the Petition of M' Ebenez' Thornton who Defires to purchafe the Land (Near his houfe) that was Left out by the Alteration of ye Publick Ways. Alfo whether the Town will Abate the forty Pounds for ye Landing places &c. or any part thereof.


Warrants were Isued out Accordingly # J Mason Town Cler.


The Selectmen being Notifyed that Sundry Prfons are come to refide in Watertown. Ordred the Clerk to Isue out warrants to warn the following perfons to to Depart out of Watertown vizt. Henry Dun who came Laft from Sudbury, who refides in ye Houfe of Isaac Sanderfon of sd Town. alfo Thos Bifhop & Mary his Wife who Came Laft from Cambridge in sd County. the refide at ye Houfe of Widw. Mary Learned of sd Watertown, alfo John Mad- docks who came Laft from sd Cambridge & refids at the Widow Grovers in Sd Watertown.


At Sd Meeting M' John Haftings Informed ye Selectmen that Mary Maddocks & her Child who are at his houfe at ye Towns Charge, wanted Sundry clothing. the Selectmen defired Sd Haftings to procure what was Necefsary for them and lay An Acct thereof before ye Selectmen.

At a General Town Meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabts. of Watertown Quallified to Vote in Town Affairs Regulerly Afsembled on the 23d Day of May 1740.


I. Voted and chofe Joseph Mason Esq'. Moderator of Sd Meeting


It was related to the Town that the Court of General Sefsions of ye peace had Voted that they Agree to the Report of ye Com- mittee for Settling ye publick ways in Watertown &c. who reported agreable to the Town Vote.


2. The Vote was put whether it is the mind of ye Town to Difpofe of Such Lands as Lyes to ye Publick Way's as Now Stated by yª Court of Sefsions, as are left out by ye prefent Stating Sd Ways, and any other land that lys to any Town way y may be convenantly Spared and ye Way Still Accomodated. And the Vote past in the Affirmative.


3. The Vote was put whether it is the mind of ye Town to Choofe a Commtee to Agree with thofe Perfons againft whofe land, ye Sª pieces of Land ly's that may be Spared, what they Shall give to ye Town for ye Same and Sd Committee to Make reporte to the Town of their doing on Sd Affair, and the Town Accepting of ye Comtees Report, be a Confirming of the Sd Land to thofe Perfons, with whom ye Sd Committee Agree.


And the Vote past in the Affirmative.


4. Voted and Chofe ye prefent Selectmen to be a Committee for ye Ends abovesd the Maj' part of them to be a Quoram.


5. Voted that ye Selectmen be a Committee to take New Bonds for the Town of Such perfons as bot Land of ye Towns Committe formerly, and to Act and do any thing yt is Necefsary to be done in Sd Affair.


6. The Vote was put whether it is the mind of ye Town to let yt piece of land by M' Eb: Thorntons left out by ye Alteration of ye publick Ways. And ye Vote paft in ye Negative


7. The Vote was put whether it is the mind of ye Town to Sell Sd piece of Land by M' Thorntons. And the Vote past in the Affirmative.


8. Voted that the Selectmen be a Committee to Sell Sd piece of land by M' Thorntons, and to give proper Conveyances of ye Same in the towns behalf, the Maj' part of ye Selectmen to be a Corom.

13. M' Eben' Thorntons Petition was red to the Town and After debate there on the Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town to Remit, and give to M' Thornton the forty pounds Rent prayed for.

And the postes Standing at the South weft Corner of his gardin is the Bounds, and the line to run Streight from Sd Pofts to ye Corner of Capt Joseph Coollidges Land Eaftward, and Weftward the Line to run Streight from Sd poft acrofs ye Town way and So upon a Straight corfe to ye Corner of Henry Brights land the way Meafured from Nath1. Coollidges Wall fence on ye South Side to the pofts aforesd four Rods and four feet.


June 30th: 1740 At a meeting of the Selectmen at ye Widw Mary Learneds. At Sd Meeting ye Selectmen Approbated M' Thos Saltmarth, ye Wid". Mary Coollidge and ye Widw. Mary Learned to be Inhold'. for ye year Infuing. And Nath'. Harris Esq'. & M' John Hunt to be Retailers. for ye year Infuing.


August 4th: 1740 At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at Nath1. Harris Esq'. Ordred ye Treafurer to pay out of ye Last Town Grants to ye Revd M' Seth Storer the Sum of one hundred & Seventy pounds as it becomes due. To M' Nath1. Harrington Schoolmafter the Sum of Seventy five pounds as it becomes due, and to ye Several perfons to whom the Town is Indebted, ye Several Sums due to them wch is alow'd of & Granted by ye Town. to Eben' Haftings his Salrey yt was granted as it becoms due. And to pay out of ye grant made for the Support of ye poor To M' John Haftings what the Selectmen Agreed with him for the keeping of Mary Maddocks & her Child as it becoms due And to Nath1. Coollidge w" the Selectmen Agreed with him for ye keeping of Margret Warrin as it becoms due and to W Lawrance 36 / for keeping Sd Margret 4 weeks 9 / # before She went to M' Coollidges. from ye 2ª March to the firft of April following.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at M' Jona" Browns on ye 12 day of Sepr. 1740. Ordred the Clerk to Ifue out a Warrat to warn one Sam" Nutting Wife & Children, alfo one Jacob Hill wife & Children to depart out of Watertown they both Came Laft from Cambridge. (which was done Accordingly)

Brown one of ye Selectmen to take care that ye sd glafs be Mended. Ordred ye Clerk to Ifue out a Warrant to warn ye Widow Mary Gibbird to depart out of Water- town She came laft from Brookfield in the County of Worcefter. Some time in Sep'. Laft (wch was done)


A Chist being wanted to put the Towns weights and Meafures in to keep them Safely Agreed that M' Jofiah Perry Sealer of weights and meafures, procure a Sutable Cheft for Sd ufe as cheep as he can, and lay his Acct thereof before ye Selectmen.


[210] Pam October the 28th: 1740. The Selectmen Pream- bulated upon the Line or Bounds between the High Way and Land of Benjamin Haftings Agreeable to what he bought formerly of ye Towns Committee. And againft his Land on the South Side of ye Highway, at the Notheaft Corner the Sd Way is four Rods & 2 feet Wyde and the Northweft Corner ye Sd Way is four Rods, and the line is a Streight Line from Corner to Corner.


then Againft the Mowing Land in his pofsefsion on ye Same Sd of ye way aforesd the Line between ye sd way & ye Land he bot there of ye aforesd Committe is as follows, At the Northeaft Corner the Sd Way is four Rods and three paces wyde, and againft the Dividing line between ye sd Haftings Land and Amos Bonds land on ye North Side of ye sd Way. from a Stake Set up ye Sª Way is four Rods and 2 paces wyde againft the ye moft Southermoft bow of ye wall fence againft Sd Amos Bonds Land the Sd Way is four Rods wyde. and at the Northweft Corner opefite to Amos Bonds Great Gate Sd Way from sd gate is four Rods and two paces wyde.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen on the the 25th. of Decemb'. 1740


At ye Houfe of Nath1. Harris Esq'. Order'd the Clerk to Isue out a Warrant to warn out of Town one Abigail Helmet who came from ye Town of Barnftable in ye County of Barnftable She Came to Watertown the Laft of Sep'. 1740 and now refides At the houfe of Ebenezer Thatcher in Sd Watertown.


At this Meeting the Selectmen Appointed to meet again on the 8th. of January Next at Thos. Saltmarfhes, at 9 of ye Clock in order to receive and Make Divifion of ye Bonds that was given to the Town Comtee. who formerly Sold Land before ye Town was Divided.


As alfo to Confider how the Kings Attorney & others Should be paid.


And that the Clerk in the Name of ye Selectmen, Send a Notifi- cation, to ye Town Clerk of Waltham to Notify Such Perfons as are Concerned to Act for Waltham in Sd Affair to meet ye Select- men of Watertown on Sd Affair at time & place aforesd.

The Selectmen Met at Mrs. Mary Learneds where they had Notifyed thofe Pfons that were to Renew their Bonds to Meet them. Sundry Pfons Did then Renew there Bonds taking up their old Bonds given to ye Towns Committee, and gave New Bonds to ye Town Treafurer the Bonds all bearing Date the Eleventh Day of December Laft paft. A lift of the Pfons Names and ye Sums Contained in ye Bonds Lodged wth the Treafurer.

Harris Esq' on their Town way (Near Adjoyning to where Dea Nathan Fiske Laft Dwelt) in which there is a Comodous Watering place which Incroachmt hath a Tendency to Disturb ye peace and good ord' of ye Town.
