At a General Town Meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabts. of Watertown Quallifyed &c. On the fifteenth Day of March by Adjournment from the forth of ye Same month 1744.


M'. John Hunt Gentl". who was Chofen Conftable by ye Inhabts of sd Town at y' Meeting ye forth Inftant. Acquainted the Town That He had Agreed with Capt Thos Homans (who was Chofen Conftable at ye sd Meeting on ye forth Inftant) To Serve In his Room If the Town Se meet to Accept of Him in his Stead.


The Vote was put whether the Town Do Accept of Capt Thos. Homans to Serve as Conftable in the Room & Stead of M' John Hunt and So to be for the whole Town. And ye Vote paft in the Affirmative.


The Selectmen at ye Defire of ye Town having Viewed the Land & Pmifes Prayed for by David Sanger. Made report to the Town That in their Oppinon there was no Land that Could be con- venantly Spared to ye Petitioner at ye place referred to in His Petition. M' Sangers Petition was Red again. And the Vote was put whether it is ye Mind of ye Town to grant the prayer of Sd Petition. And the Vote paft in the Negative.

At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at David Coollidges. on the 25 Day of March A.D. 1745. Agreed that the Prefent Surveyers Diftricts for Mending the Ways Should be the Same as they were ye Last year.


The Meeting Houfe Glafs being brook and Neading Mending Agreed that M' Ebenezer Bradifh be Defired to Mend Said Glafs.

Agreed wth M' Benj" Haftings to Set up the Pound and to Do it forth with And to bring in his Acct thereof to ye Selectmen.


The Selectmen Defired Mefsrs. Daniel Whitney & Jona" Bemis to Cart down the Stuff of ye old Pound to ye place where the New Pound is to be Errected. And to povide Stones for underpinning the New Pound, and Such Stuff is Wanting (if any be).


Agreed with M' John Coollidge Jun'. To take and keep the Widow Deliverance Webb) at the Rate of Eight Shillings and Six pence { Week (Old Tenner) for one Year, And If Sicknefs Should happen to her in the Sd term He to be Alowed Reafonable Satis- faction for his Trouble in that cafe.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at the Houfe of Joseph Mafon Esq' on the 17th Day of April 1745. The Pound being a New Set up at a New place appointed by the Town, It being Necefsary that a New Pound keep' be Appointed to keep Sd pound as the Law Directs.

The Selectmen having Recd a Precipt Requiring them in His Majestys Name forthwith to Caufe the the Freeholders and other Inhab's. of Said Town Quallifyed &c. To Afsemble &c To Elect and Depute one or more Perfons to Reprefent them at a Great & General Court Or Afsembly Appointed to be Convened at Boston on ye 29th of May Currant.


The Selectmen in Obfervance there of Ordred the Clerk to Isue out a Warranted Directed to ye Conftable of sd Watertown to Warn the Freeholdrs and other Inhab's. of Sd Watertown who are Qual- lifyed to Vote in the Choice of a Reprefentative to Afsemble & Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in Sd Town on Munday the 20th Day of May Currant at three of ye Clock after Noon. Then and there to Elect one Sutable Perfon to Serve for & Reprefent them at a Great & General Court Appointed to be Conven'd held & kept for His Majestys Service at the Court Houfe in Bofton upon Wednefday the 29th Day of May Inftant.


And to Order the Sd Conftable Likewife to Warn the Freeholdrs: & other Inhabts. of Watertown to Meet at the Publick Meeting Houfe in Sª Town at four of ye Clock on the Abovesd 20th. Day of May for the Ends following vizt.


The Selectmen being Informed that the Inhab's. of Waltham have Chofe a Comtee: in Order to Sell Some Land Lying in Sª Waltham which belongs to and is the Property of Watertown. Therefore for the Town to take Sd Affair into Confideration and to Do and Act what they Shall Judge proper with Relation thereunto.


To hear the Petition of Jofiah Perry praying that the Town wld Sell to him (for valuable Confideration) a piece of ye Town's Land Lying Weft of ye Meeting Houfe and againft the Reer of His Land as Set forth in His Petition and for Reafons therein Mentioned. And for the Town to Act y' Pleafure with Relation thereunto.


A Warrant was Isued out Accordingly.


At Sd Meeting the Selectmen Ordred ye Treafurer to pay to Benj". Haftings the Sum of five pounds fifteen Shillings old Ten" in full of His Acct for work done at ye pound. Alfo to Sam1 Fiske the Sum of fifteen Shillings old Ten' in full for timb' He got for ye pound.


At a General Town Meeting of ye Freeholders & other Inhabts. of Watertown Regulerly afsembled & Meet at the Publick Meeting Houfe in Sd Town on ye 20th Day of May A.D. 1745. For to Elect & Depute One Perfon to Serve for and Reprefent them in a Great & General Court Appointed to be Conven'd held & Kept for His Majestys Service at the Court Houfe in Bofton on the 29th of May Inftant.


And After the Votes were given in Sorted and Counted it ap- peared that M' John Hunt was Chofen for the Service abovesd. by the Maj'. part of the Voters Prefent.

Voted and Chofe Joseph Mason Esq' Moderator of sd Meeting. Then the firft Article in ye Warning Relating to Walthams proceeding was Red and Confidred.


And the Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town to Chofe a Comtee: to take Advice with Relation to Sd Affair and to Report to ye Town at their Next Meeting. & ye Vote paft in the Affarmative.


Voted and Chofe Mefsrs. Jonas Bond & John Hunt to be the Comtee : to Apply to Council for Advice in the Affair Abovesd.


M' Jofiah Perrys Petition was Red to ye Town. And Objections were put in by Sundry of ye Inhab's: of ye Town, and After Debate thereon The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town to Act upon said Petition.

At a meeting of ye Selectmen at Nath1 Harris Esq'. on May 13th: 1745


There being one of ye String pieces of ye Middle peer of ye Great Bridge Broken and ye Bridge become Dangrious. Agreed yt M' Benj": Haftings who has ye Care of Sª Bridge, be defired to put in a New String piece forth with. wch ye Selectmen View'd belonging to M' Sanger of Sherbourn as yy were Informed.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at M' Thos Saltmarthes. on ye 24 of June 1745. The Selectmen Signified upon the Lift Sent to them of ye Licenced Perfons, that the had No objection to Make againft the Same Perfons Renewing their Licences this prefent Year. Viz. Thomas Saltmarth David Coollidge & Mary Learned Inholders. And Nath1. Harris Esq' and M' John Hunt Retailers. Ordred the Treafurer to provid a pr of Shoos for the Widw Webb.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at M' Jona" Bemis's on ye 13th Day of Sep. 1745. The Selectmen being Informed by Mrs. Mercy Coollidge that the Wid". Webb has great Nead of Two Shifts, a Petycoat and & Wefcot, Agreed that ye Sd Mrs Coollidge be defired to procure Sd things for sd Wid". and give the Selectmen An Acct thereof in ord' to be paid.


At Sd Meeting ye Selectmen Signed An Order upon ye Treafurer. To pay out of the Laft Afsefm'. Commted. to Conftable Homans to Collect To ye Revª M' Storer £100- .. - .. old Ten' & to John Coollidge in part for keeping Widw. Webb ye Sum of f10- .. - .. old Ten'. & To Joseph Harrington the Sum of £5- 10- .. out of ye Money Granted for the Pound.

At a Meeting of ye Selectmen of Watertown On the 4th Day of Octo': 1745. At Nath1. Harris's Esq'. There being Necefsity that there be Speedy care taken of ye Great Bridge there being One String piece broken in one peer, And another very Much Sunk in a nother peer, whereby there is Danger &c. The Selectmen Agreed that M' Benj". Haftings who has the care of sd Bridge be defired, forth with to put in a String piece where it is wanting vizt. that piece of Timber which the Selectmen have Look't out if it. may be had, And that there be Set up a Supporter under the Weft String piece of ye heither peer (which is Sunk as aforesd) that being thot proper to be done to Secure ye Same for the prefent. And ye Selectmen defired Justice Harris to take the over Sight of ye work.


There being Necefsity alfo of Some gravil to be carryed on to the Cafsey of Sª Bridge the Selectmen Defired Mefsurs. Jona" Bemis & Dan1. Whitney to carry on what is wanting. who under- took to do ye Same And to bring in their Acct to the Selectmen.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen on the 28th of Octo': 1745. Upon a Second View of ye Great Bridge the Selectmen find that ye uper String piece of the North peer on which the King poft Stands (which was Much Sunk) is So Rotton and Defective as renders that peer of sd Bridge very dangerous. (And judged not Safe to truft to a Supporter wch is Lyable to be carryed a way by Ice)


The Selectmen Agreed to procure a New String piece for Sd Peer, And Acordingly went and View'd the Timb' by the River, and found a very good One belonging to M' Zacry: Heard. And agreed yt if it can be obtained to draw it on to Sd Peer by the Side of ye Defective piece and So to fix it and the plank on to it for this Winter, The Selectmen being of Oppinion that a Mud Cell and Supporters put under Neath Sd Peer as they will be cheeper than King posts above, So the Bridge will be better Sup- ported. Agreed that Jofhua Warrin jun' be defired to help Lay Sª String piece and the plank (Benj": Haftings being Sick) and that M' Jona". Bemis and Enf". Dan1. Whitney are defired to Afsist wth. a Teem.


The above Sd String piece upon tryal was found to be too Short. Whereupon the Selectmen Defired M' Isaac Williams of Newton to procure one forth with. who procured one at £12=15 -..


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at Enf". Daniel Whitneys Jany: 24. 1745. The Selectmen Signed an Order upon the Treafurer to pay out of ye Treafurey of ye money came in by ye Laft Afsefmt. To M' Eben'. Stone & Sam1. Stratton a Comtee chofen to repair the Minifteral Houfe The Sum of Twenty four pounds Ten Shil- lings and Six pence which was granted for that Service, old Tenner. £24=10-6

Complaint being made to ye Selectmen that M' Sam1 Coollidge is come again to town and is under Such Circumftances that he is in Dainger of Suffering if Some thing be not Emediately done for him (Altho his Conduct has been Such as is very unaccount- able whereby he has forfitted both Credit & kindnefs) The Selectmen out of Humanitie towards him under his Necefsitous Circumftances think themfelves Oblidged to Do Some thing for him at ye Towns Cost to releive him for ye prefent untill further Meafures may be taken Concerning him. Accordingly Agreed to procure for him a p' of Shoos a p' of Stockins a pr of Britches and as the Selectmen are Informed there are Some old cloths belong- ing to him Left at Certain places Agreed to make inquirey and if any be to get ye Same for him that he might not Suffer till futher care can be taken of him.

The time drawing Nigh for the Ufuall Annual Meeting in March. Ordred the Clerk to Ifue out a Warrant Directed to ye Conftable of Watertown to Warn the Freeholders and other Inhabts. of Sd Town who are Qualified to Vote in Town Affairs to Afsemble and Meet together at the Publick Meeting houfe in Sd Town on Munday the Third Day of March Next at Nine of ye Clock before None for the Ends following vizt. (1) To Choofe a Moderator. To choofe Selectmen to Manage the prudential affairs of ye Town A Town Clerk. A Town Treafurer. A Conftable or Conftables. Afsefsors. and all Such oth'. Town Officers as by Law are to be chofen in the Month of March Annually. To Choofe A Saxton, and to Agree how the Saxton Shall be paid. To put in their Votes for a County Regester. And for a County Treafurer. To hear the Town Treaf's. Accts. For the Town to Appropriate this prefent Years Intereft Money Coming to ye Town the Year begin- ing the Eleventh Day of Decemb'. Laft. To Grant ye Revd M' Seth Storer his Salary for the Enfuing Year According to Contract And to know the Mind of ye Town what Addition they will Make to M' Storers Salery for the Year Enfuing, and how it Shall be paid. To Grant a Supply for the Support of the Grammer and Englifh School for ye Year Enfuing. To grant Money for the

To hear the Peticuler Accts. of Sundry Per- fons wch the Town are Indebted to and to grant Money to Satiffy the Same. To know the Mind of ye Town whether they will mend the Publick & Town Ways by Rate this year as as has been the method of ye Town of Late. And in Cafe the Town Agree So to Do, Then to grant money for sd Affair. And to choofe the Sur- veyers of the High Ways to be the Collectors, for to Collect or Se that the Afsefm for that End be work't out Agreeable to Such Directions as the Town Shall give. To hear the Requeft of Some of the Late Conftables that the Town wld Sink or Abate Some per- fons Rates in their Lifts of Afsfints. And for the Town to Act their Pleafure with Relation therunto. To know the Mind of ye Town whether they will purchafe that piece of Land belonging to ye Widw. Hannah Fish if it May be obtained which Ly's in Common & undivided with Land belonging to the Minifteral place Near Thomas Wellingtons and Add it to the Minifteral place. And whether the Town will purchafe Some wood Land (If any May be had) for the ufe of ye Minifteral place, And if the Town See Meat to purchafe as aforesd. To Choofe and Impower a Committee for that End. And for the Town to Manafeft their Minds how and in what Manner the Land that Maybe purchafed Shall be paid for. The cafe and Circumftances of M' Samuel Coollidge being Diftrefsing as well as very Difficult upon Several Accts. The Selectmen Agree to Lay his Cafe before the Town That the Town May Manifeft their Mind what they think proper to be done for him, and done with him, under his prefent Circum- ftances, And Accordingly Direct their Selectmen who are the OverSeers of ye poor what Meafures they Shall Take with Relation to ye Sd Coollidge. To know the mind of ye Town whether Swine Shall Run at Large under the Regulation of ye Law in that Cafe provided. To know the mind of ye Town Relating to horfes Runing at Large. and for the Town to Do and Act what they Shall judge Necefsary and proper to prevent their doing of Damage (It being the Defire of Sundry of ye Inhabts. of ye Town) To know To know the Mind of the Town (in this prefent time of war when Many of ye Inhabts. of ye Town are Lyable to be Impreft into the war) whether the Town will Come into a Method of Raif- ing of Money on the Ratable Pols & Estates of Sd Town to be Collected and to Ly as a fund, that when any of the Inhabts. of ye Town Shall be Impreft then to be Improved to hire Men to go into the war in their Room, or in any other Way

Mary Learneds on Fryday the Laft day of February Currant at three of ye Clock afternoon, when and where the Selectmen have Appointed to Meet to Receive them ; in order to Lay them before the Town at their Next Meeting.


And that the Conftable do Notifie the Several Collectors of ye High way Afsefm' to Meet the Sd Selectmen at the aforesd time & place (of Receiving Accts) in Order to Make up their Accts. of their Refpective Collections &c.


(A Warrant was Isued out Accordingly and Committed to ye Conftables)


At Sd Meeting the Selectmen Signed an Order for the Treafurer to pay out of the Intereft Money Coming into the Treafurey.
