CHURCHILL.


The Churchills are of English descent. John Churchill came in 1643 to Plymouth, Mass. He m. Dec. 18, 1644, Hannah Pontus and had six children. The generations following are: William2, b. in 1657; m. Jan. 17, 1683, Lydia Bryant. Had eight children. Williams, their eldest son, b. Aug. 2, 1685; m. Jan. 4, 1704, Ruth Bryant. Eleven children. Nathaniel4, their son, b. May 11, 1718; m. June 4, 1741, Susannah McFarland. Seven children. Nathaniel5, b. May 10, 1746; m. Dec. 27, 1770, Deborah Wright. Six children. He served in the Revolution.


1. LEWIS6 CHURCHILL, eldest son of Nathaniel, was b. Dec. 12, 1771, in Plympton, Mass. Came to Cornish soon after 1797. A farmer and car- penter, active and agile even to old age. He d. NATHANIEL6 CHURCHILL, youngest brother of Lewise, was b. May 13, 1784, and lived in Grantham (now Cornish). He m. a sister of Tristam Hardy. Had one child, Alice, b. in Cornish, Aug. 5, 1808. He was killed by being thrown from a horse while crossing a brook Jan. 4, 1808, but the gravestone record says he d. on the 29th of same month, aged 24. Was buried in Cornish.


2. BARKER BREWSTER? CHURCHILL (Lewis6, Nathaniels-4, William3-2, Johni) was b. Feb. 4, 1815, in Cornish. A farmer and carpenter; rem. from the farm to the Flat in 1861. He enlisted in the Civil War. (See Military.) After the war he continued at his trade through life. He m. first, in 1842, Mary A. Angier, b. in 1824, and d. May 26, 1861; m. second, Jan. 21, 1867, Mrs. Mary J. (Westgate) Britton, b. May 2, 1831, and d. Aug. 5, 1907. He d. Oct. 15, 1879, aged 64. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. A child, b. March -, 1843, and d. in Aug. of same year.


ii. EDGAR A., b. Aug. 29, 1847. He enlisted in the Civil War with his father. (See Military.) Like all his immediate ancestors, he is a sturdy Democrat and often nominated on that ticket. Has served the town many years as a selectman. He is a farmer and res. on the farm of John and Hannah (Brown) Davis, of which he came into possession through faithful service as their employee. Unm. in 1910.


iii. MARY E., b. April 20, 1850; m. Aug. 29, 1874, Lovell B. George of Newport. Two children.


iv. JENNIE, b. Dec. 31, 1885; m. July 11, 1876, William F. Waite of Worcester, Mass. Five children. She d. May 25, 1891.

WINSTON CHURCHILL (Edwards Spaulding, Edwin7, Jamess, Thomas5-4, Barnabas3, Joseph?, John1) from the same emigrant ancestor as the Cornish Churchills, was b. Nov. 10, 1871, in St. Louis, Mo. His father, Edward Spaulding Churchill, was b. April 2, 1846, in Portland, Me., and m. Jan. 30, 1871, Emma B. Blaine who d. soon after the birth of her little son. He was then taken by an aunt, his mother's sister, who brought him up. (See sketch.)


CLARK.


BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CLARK, the son of Hiram and Adaline (Fisher) Clark of Croydon, was b. June 17, 1832. He spent several years in the West engaged in "ranching." Returning East, he came to Cornish in March, 1886. He m. May 12, 1886, Mrs. Cozella (Borden) Hurd, dau. of Albert and Augusta V. (Allen) Borden, b. Sept. 9, 1861. They settled in Cor-

HISTORY OF CORNISH.


COBB.


This family can easily be traced baek 300 years to Henry Cobb1, b. 1586 in the County of Kent, Eng. He came to America in 1629 and was a prominent man in Barnstable, Mass., where he lived and d. He left sixteen children. His eldest son, John?, b. June 7, 1632, in Plymouth, Mass., had eight children. His fourth son, Ebenezer3, b. Aug. 9, 1671, had a family of twelve children, b. in Kingston and Middleboro, Mass. The eldest son, Ebenezer4, was b. in Kingston in a house still standing (1900). Lived 107 years and 8 months, living in three centuries, having been b. in 1694, and dying in 1801. He had eleven children. His eldest son, also named Ebenezers, was parent of seventeen ehil- dren. Of this family two brothers, Francis6 and Ebenezers, both b. in Plympton, Mass., came to Cornish about 1784. Francis had served as a soldier in the War of the Revolution to its close. They bought a tract of land of Esq. Daniel Chase, whercon they settled and spent the remainder of their lives.


They divided the land between themselves and the farms still bear their names. It was then chiefly a traet of wild woodland, but they cleared a portion, and raised wheat, paying for the land in one year. The yield is said to have been 70 bu. to the acre.

Was one of the original members of the Baptist Church in Lebanon, formed in Aug., 1862, and was its first deacon, always serving as a member of the Society com- mittee. Was on the Building committee for the construction of their first chapel, and also for their commodious house of worship. Always a generous giver for the church and for benevolence. He had the respect of all who knew him. Was an honest upright man and a devoted Chris- tian. In 1883 he moved to Shelburne Falls, Mass., where in his new home, near his dau., he d. Jan. 9, 1884. ix. ELDAD, b. Nov. 13, 1797; m. June 1, 1825, Diantha Aldrich of Chitten- den, Vt., b. in 1798, and d. Aug. 21, 1874. They had one son, Solon, b. in 1826, and d. Aug. 7, 1831. Mr. Coburn owned and operated a carding machine, a fulling and cloth dressing machine. These were situated up the brook east of the Flat. He d. April 15, 1876.


2. PHINEHAS2 COBURN (Merrill1) b. Sept. 6, 1778; m. April 14, 1803, Hannah French of Cornish, dau. of Ephraim and Comfort (York) French, b. June, 1778. It appears that they settled in E. Wallingford, Vt., as several of the family were reared there. The record of their children is deficient in order and in dates, so the arrangement may not be correct. The following has been obtained:

vi. ALVAH, lived in Enosburg, Vt .; m. - , Hannah Walbridge. A son of his (Horace) came to town, in 1907, to live, purchasing the Henry Gould place up east of the Flat.


3. SIMON? COBURN (Merrill1) was b. May 25, 1780; m. - , Ruth Eaton, b. in Haverhill, Mass., May 24, 1781, and d. in Cornish April 8, 1857. He was a farmer and d. Dec. 19, 1863. They lived many years in Salem and afterwards in Pelham and settled in Cornish about 1820. Children, all except the last one b. before coming to town:


i. ABIGAIL, b. in Salem, Aug. 22, 1803; m. Feb. 14, 1826, Amos Kelley. Eleven children. (See Kelley.) She d. Feb. 15, 1878.

April 22, 1813. After Mr. Coburn's death, she m. June 8, 1870, Dea. Arunah Burnap of Cornish and d. June 4, 1893. Mr. Coburn was a farmer and lived east of the Flat; a devoted Baptist. He d. He served in the Revolutionary War, was in the battles of Trenton and Bemis Heights. Removed to Plainfield in 1784 where he d. June 20, 1842. Children, all b. in Plainfield:
