STONE.


DEA. JOSIAH STONE was one of the pioneer settlers of Cornish. He was b. Feb. 17, 1750, in Brookfield, Mass., and came to Cornish about the year 1777. Settled in the north central part of the town, where his sur- roundings were an almost unbroken wilderness. This he made his per- manent home the remainder of his life. He mn. first, March 6, 1777, Hannah Weld of Sturbridge, Mass., dau. of Moses and Elizabeth (Hol- brook) Weld, b. Sept. 25, 1754, and d. in Cornish, Oct. 26, 1794; m. second, June 3, 1795, Margarett Williams, b. in 1753, d. June 20, 1826. He d. May 24, 1833. Had eight children, all by first marriage, and b. in Cornish.

Then he rem. to Weathersfield, Vt., and was in trade by himself nineteen years, and then rem. to Franklin, where he was associated in trade with his son (Edwin C., who d. in Nov., 1904) till his death Jan. 23, 1872. In religious life, he was firm in the Trinitarian faith and consistent in life. Was Dea. and Sunday school Supt. a great part of his life. While liv- ing in Cornish they had a dau. b. to them Oct. 1, 1820, Susan Whittlesey Stone. They had other children.


2. WALTER? STONE (Josiah1) b. in Cornish Oct. 5, 1780; m. Nov. 16, 1806, Nancy M. Dexter of Claremont, b. March 9, 1791; d. June 29, 1869. He d. Aug. 27, 1863, aged 82. Lived many years on Cornish Flat. Was a harness, trunk and saddle maker. They rem. to Webster, Mass., about -, where they d. Children:

3. CAPT. JOSIAH2 STONE (Dea. Josiah1) b. Dec. 10, 1789. On the day of his majority (Dec. 10, 1810) he m. Experience Stevens, dau. of Job and Elizabeth (Chase) Stevens of Plainfield. (Mr. Stevens' father was great-grandson of the Secretary of Charles the First, king of England, and who emigrated to Plainfield, in 1765; who with others had obtained a charter of the township of Plainfield, and settled on a large farm on the Connecticut river, midway between Cornish and Lebanon.) Mr. Stone was a farmer, a man of sterling integrity and was a Capt. of a company of the State Militia for several years. He d. March 20, 1865. His wife d. Sept. 11, 1867. Children, all b. in Cornish :


i. SAMUEL WILLARD, b. Oct. 6, 1811. Educated in the district schools of Cornish and at Kimball Union Academy. Taught school and engaged in mercantile work in Vt. and N. H. till 1845, when he went west in the same business. In 1869, he rem. to Topeka, Kan., where he opened a music store. Was prominent in musi- cal circles, and author of a number of popular songs, among them, "Wait for the Wagon." His later years were devoted to insurance business. His jovial good nature made him many friends. The parish records of Grace Church, kept by his hand, witness many years of good service as clerk and vestry- man. He was twice m. He d. in Topeka, Jan. 31, 1897.


ii. FLORILLA ELIZA, b. Sept. 22, 1813; m. Nov. 22, 1836, Daniel Rix of Royalton, Vt. Four children. She d. - in Utica, N. Y.


iii. SYLVESTER STEVENS, b. Nov. 12, 1815. His chronicler says of him, "that from early boyhood he seemed to take a special interest in responding with joyous good nature to the wants of his par- ents." He m. Oet. 18, 1841, Mary Huggins of Cornish, dau. of Joseph and Hannah (Bingham) Huggins, b. Jan. 23, 1817; d. Sept. 10, 1868. After his m. he lived a few years in Cornish, then a few years in Boston and also in Ill. After this he rem. to Topeka, Kan., and engaged in real estate and insurance busi- ness until his death, Feb., 1893. No children.

iv. WILLIAM ALANSON, b. Nov. 21, 1817. Spent his early years in the loving parental home, where mind sharpened mind and heart responded to heart in common sympathies, worthy objects and exalted aims. A near neighbor, Col. James Ripley, having no children of his own, sought the services of William soon after he entered his teens, and so he left his own happy home and made another with Mr. Ripley until nearly twenty years of age, when

a strong desire for an education seized him. He entered Kim- ball Union Academy in 1837, graduated in class of 1840; Dartmouth College in class of 1844. During all the years of his studies, he taught schools, and after his collegiate course he became principal of Hill Academy, 1844-45; teacher, Middle- bury, Ohio, 1845-47. Returning east, he continued his chosen profession for nearly twenty-five years as principal of academics and high schools in the towns of Abington, Winchester and

Woburn, Mass. In 1872, he gave up teaching and has since given his time largely to insurance and investments, brokerage, etc. Hem. Sept. 1, 1847, Emily M. Sumner of Middlebury, Ohio. They have had five children, all b. in Woburn, Mass. "He was one of Nature's truest noblemen." He d. Nov. 7, 1910, in Cliftondale, Mass.

vi. MARY CLEORA, b. Dec. 23, 1827; m. Jan. 1, 1850, David Sidney Richardson of Cornish. She d. July 3, 1904. (See sketch.)


vii. MARTHA EXPERIENCE, b. Jan. 21, 1831. Educated at Kimball Union Academy and also at Royalton Academy where she grad- uated with the highest honors. She m. - , Edward P. Stone of Montpelier, Vt., the principal of the Academy. In 1856 they went to North Carolina as teachers in the Franklinton Institute which was then in charge of Prof. and Mrs. D. S. Richardson. Soon after a malignant fever fell upon the community and school, and she became one of the many vietims, thus cutting short a life of great promise. She d. Sept. 2, 1856. Her biogra- pher says: "A brilliant scholar and the loveliest of women, she endeared herself to all, displaying those charming qualities we all love, and those varied abilities we all admire. She died on one beautiful Sunday morning in the arms of her heart- broken husband, while with sweet, almost inaudible strain she was singing-


" 'Day of all the week the best, Emblem of eternal rest.' "

HIRAM STONE, of no known relation to the other families, was b. in So. Berwick, Me., Aug. 19, 1823. Coming to N. H. about 1845, he assisted in build- ing the railroad bridge at W. R. Junetion and other works on the rail- road. He was stone mason. He m. Dec., 1848, Lydia J. Butman of Enfield, dau. of Amos and Mariam (Heath) Butman. Came to Cor- nish about 1850. Lived some years near Cornish "City," afterwards near and east of the "Flat." He enlisted Aug. 22, 1862, in Co. I, 14th Regt., N. H. Vols., and d. in the service Oct. 6, 1864, at Washington, D. C. His remains were sent to Cornish for burial. Lydia, his wid., d. Jan. 27, 1870. Children, all b. in Cornish:

Aug. 4, 1851, Adalaide Marcia Bishop of Windsor, dau. of Lyman and Margaret (Conant) Bishop, b. May 1, 1834. He was a painter and paper-hanger. He d. Nov. 28, 1879. The circumstances connected with his death have ever been shrouded in mystery, as he was found in a dazed con- dition, unable to give an intelligent account of himself, with a severe contusion upon the back of his head and with a broken skull, from the effects of which he soon d. His wife d. May 31, 1910. Children, all b. in Cornish except first two:

STOWELL.


This family was early implanted in New England, and from that point has spread through the country, and its representatives are especially numerous in the northern portion of it. It has had many honorable representatives who have been conspicuous in public life and have done credit to the name.


SAMUEL1 STOWELL (or Stoel, as then spelled) was the emigrant ancestor who came from Norfolk Co., Eng., to Hingham, Mass., in 1647. Two years afterwards he m. Mary Farrow and they had eleven children.


DAVID2 STOWELL, son of Samuel, m. April 7, 1675, Mary Stedman. They had six children and lived in Cambridge and Newton, Mass.

ISAAC+ STOWELL, son of Davids and Mary Dilloway, was b. Oct. 6, 1739, in Pomfret, Conn .; m. first, in Willington, Conn., Feb. 9, 1758, Phebe Root; m. second, in Rockingham, Vt., Nov. 15, 1783, Sally Emerson.


EBENEZERS STOWELL, son of Isaacs and Phebe (Root) Stowell, was b. Dec. 14, 1758, in Willington, Conn .; m. in Rockingham, Vt., May 31, 1781, Pamelia Whitney. He served in the Revolutionary War for some time and then came and settled on the west side of Grantham mountain which was afterwards annexed to Cornish. He d. April 27, 1837. Pamelia d. Aug. 4, 1848. Their children were:

WENTWORTH STUART, son of Wentworth Stuart, was b. Jan. 19, 1820, in Raymond, Me. He finally became a res. of Windsor, Vt., where he was a

successful tailor. He was twice m. His last wife whom he m. April 4, 1877, was Mrs. Esther B. (Prescott) Downer. They came to Cornish to live in the spring of 1886, settling as a farmer on the place formerly owned and occupied by Dr. Samuel Hardy, where he d. Aug. 9, 1900. His wid. d. May 22, 1904. They had one child:


1. WENTWORTH, JR., b. - , in Windsor, Vt. He m. Dec. 13, 1900, Sadie E. Chase of Cornish, dau. of Joseph S. and Hattie (York) Chase, b. Jan. 23, 1884. Soon after the death of the father, the Hardy farm was sold and the family purchased the Rich farm and occupied it a few years. Here the mother d. when the young man with his family rem. to Windsor, Vt., where he entered the employ of - - Kennedy, as gardener. They had several children:
