LOTHROP.


JOHN LOTHROP was b. in Easton, Mass., Oct. 12, 1759; m. first, Dee. 7, 1780, Sarah Cook of Easton. They came to Cornish to live in 1807, and set- tled on the farm since known as the Goward homestead. This farm was first owned by Thomas Nutter and was deeded by him to Mr. Lothrop May 23, 1807, who deeded the same to Isaac Goward Nov. 9, 1824. Mrs. Lothrop d. June 29, 1827. He m. second, June 10, 1828, Mrs. Lydia (Bradley) Rice, wid. of Dimond Rice, who was b. in 1774, and d. Sept. 14, 1864. He d. Nov. 21, 1836. Children, all by first wife, and b. in Easton, Mass .:

He d. in Concord Feb. 29, 1864. He moved with his family to Concord, April 14, 1847, from the farm he bought and settled on in 1820. It was formerly owned by a Mr. Dana. Children, all b. in town:

vi. WILLIAM B., b. March 6, 1801. It is not known that he m. He d. in Weathersfield, Vt., from injuries received from a falling barn to which he had resorted for shelter during a heavy storm of wind and rain.


JOHN LUEY, son of Thomas, was b. April 23, 1794; m. 1825, Clarissa Spaulding of Plainfield, dau. of Simon and Mary (Mason) Spaulding, b. Oct. 30, 1796, d. Feb. 10, 1855, aged 58. He remained in Cornish on the old homestead caring for his parents while they lived. After the death of his wife, he sold out and bought a farm in Shelburne, Mass., and rem. there till 1872, when he rem. to Northfield Farms, Mass., and d. there March 22, 1878, buried in Cornish. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. MARY MASON, b. Dec. 19, 1826; never m .; d. in Greenfield, Mass., April 10, 1899, aged 73.


ii. SIMON SPAULDING, b. Jan. 1, 1829. Went to Cal. in April, 1851, with others from town when the gold fever was raging and he never returned. He d. at Willow Valley, Cal., May 27, 1893. iii. CLARISSA CYRENA, b. Sept. 22, 1830; m. Jan. 1, 1886, Pliny Porter of Greenfield, Mass. One child: Florence Cyrena, b. Jan. 27, 1870. To Mrs. Porter we are indebted for most of the records of this family.


iv. JOHN WESLEY, b. Nov. 5, 1832; m. Jan. 21, 1861, Margaret Cady of Boston. He d. in Plainfield June 19, 1882, and is buried there.


V. EDWIN TAFT, b. Sept. 4, 1834; m. Nov. 14, 1858, Jennie Merriam of Greenfield, Mass. One child: Clara. Mr. Luey d. Nov. 30, 1901, at Millers Falls, Mass.


vi. FLORENCE JANETTE, b. Nov. 5, 1841. She d. Dec. 19, 1863, in Shelburne, Mass. Was buried in Cornish.

CALEB LUTHER was b. in 1751, in Warren, R. I. He was a Revolutionary soldier, presumably from Rhode Island. He m. first, about 1773, Rebecca Brown of Barrington, R. I. She was b. in 1755, and was a near relative of Nicholas Brown of Providence, R. I., who founded Brown University. She d. in Cornish Oct. 20, 1792, aged 37. He m. second, May, 1793, Mary Foss, of -, b. -; d. in Cornish April 7, 1842, aged 84. He d. in Cornish Jan. 27, 1840, aged 89. Children, all by first wife except last one:

March 3, 1772, and d. in town March 20, 1826. They lived first on the place now owned and occupied by W. E. Chadbourne and afterwards on the Capt. Constant Smith place, now owned and occupied by Herbert Deming. Mr. Marble m. again Sept. S, 1831, Mrs. Anna (Munroe) Ford, wid. of Capt. Daniel Ford. He then rem. to Claremont, where he d. but was buried in Cornish. Children, all b. in town:

LIEUT. ELIAS MARTINDALE was b. in 1764, in -; m. - , Mindwell Belden, b. in 1754; d. in Cornish Jan. 18, 1851, aged 97. He d. Jan. 10, 1826. Both were buried in the cemetery at the Flat. They eame to town near the elose of the eighteenth century and settled on the Flat. Their children were:

iv. ROBERT, b. Aug. 12, 1793. Went west to N. Y. state about the time his brother Stephen left home. No further record of him is known.

vi. SARAH A., b. June 5, 1829; m. Oct. 6, 1853, Carlisle D. Beeman. Six children. Lived in Waukon, Iowa, where she d. Feb. 3, 1893. vii. LUCY A., b. Feb. S, 1832; in. Jan. 30, 1856, Andrew Lane. Res. in Lebanon. Two children.


viii. ITHAMAR, b. July 25, 1834. When of age he went west to Waukon, Iowa. He m. Sept. 19, 1872, Rachel Hall. Three children. He d. March 25, 1887.


ix. LAURA J., b. Dec. 19, 1837; m. March 29, 1866, Nathaniel Mitchell. Lives in Rossville, Iowa, 1908. Four children.


PELETIAH MARTINDALE was a brother of Lieut. Elias and came to town probably about the same time. But little record of him or his family has come to hand. He m. - , Betsey Jackson, b. about 1770 and d. Sept. 6, 1828, aged 58.


"Within this saered bed of rest A tender mother lies, But she shall live among the blest When Christ shall bid her rise." (Inscription on tombstone.)


They had a dau. Lydia C., b. about 1804, d. April 22, 1820, aged 16. They also had a son William; m. Mrs. Sophia (Hilliard) Smith, dau. of Amos Avery and Sarah (Huggins) Hilliard. No issue. Some years after, he left town for parts unknown. Sophia d. April 2, 1900, aged 99 years, 9 days.


MASON.


CHARLES MASON was b. in Swanzey, Mass., March 2, 1822. He was the son of Valentine Mason, who was the son of Job Mason, both of whom res. in Swanzey, Mass. He was m. Feb. 27, 1845, to Eliza S. Peek, also of Swanzey, b. May 25, 1927. After their m. they lived several years in Warren, R. I., where their children were all b. In 1875, they eame to Cornish, purchasing and settling on the Amos Richardson farm. In 1890, after fifteen years res. here, declining health and loss of a leg caused him to sell and rem. with all his family to Franklin, Mass., where he d. Sept. 11, 1896, aged 74. Mrs. Mason d. - -. Children:


i. CHARLES CLARENCE, b. March 26, 1852; m. - , Mrs. Ellen M. (Ripley) Davis, dau. of David K. and Rosilla (Clark) Ripley. He d. in Franklin, Mass., March 6, 1893.

HISTORY OF CORNISH.


MELENDY.


DAVID E. MELENDY, was b. in Croydon June 19, 1828, the son of John and Sally (Clark) Melendy; m. June 9, 1870, to Susan Comings of Cornish, dau. of William F. and Abigail (Bryant) Comings, b. Jan. 13, 1837. No children. A farmer, quiet and unostentatious. He came to Cornish and res. for a time at the "Hempyard," and later owned and res. on the Levi Ayers farm till Jan., 1904, when his house was burned, and he, being in a crippled condition, was taken to Claremont, where he d. Feb. 21, 1904, aged 75.


MERCER.


WILLIAM MERCER was b. in 1771, in Scotland, and also Elizabeth his wife, and all of their children. The family came to this country in 1818, and soon after located in Claremont as wool-workers and machinists. Mr. Mercer d. in Claremont Oct. 15, 1826, but his sons continued the business. About 1830, most of the family rem. to Cornish and built the mills in the west part of the town, long known as "Mercer's Mills." Here they did a thriving business at wool-manufacturing. The business continued till about 1887, when, by reason of the death of some of the principals, and age and infirmity of those remaining, the business declined and finally ceased. Children of William and Elizabeth Mercer, and born in Scotland:


i. WALTER, b. April 9, 1804; m. - , Susan T. Cady of Weathersfield, Vt., b. Sept. 24, 1815, and d. May 3, 1887, dau. of Silas and Polly (Chase) Cady. They had one child: William W., b. May 21, 1843, and d. Sept. 19, 1895. In William's will, he bequeathed several thousand dollars for the benefit of education in Cornish. (See High Schools.) Walter Mercer, the father, was a wool- worker and machinist. He d. May 30, 1845.


ii. GEORGE, b. June -, 1805, was also a wool-worker. After the death of his brother, Walter, he m. - , his wid., and by her had one son: Edwin. George d. Jan. 15, 1880.


iii. JOHN, b. - , 1808; m. - , Julia Cone. No children. He was. also a wool-worker. He d. May 9, 1875.


iv. WILLIAM, JR., b. - , 1809. A first-class machinist. He d. in Cuba. It is said he m. and had a son William living on Long Island.


v. ELIZABETH, b. - , 1810; m. first, Mercer who came from Scotland with her father. One child. (See John H. Mercer.) M. second, -, Alexander Barker. Four children. (See Barker.) She d. in 1896.


vi. JANE, b. - , d. in Scotland.


vii. THOMAS, b. -. A machinist. Never m. Contracted consump- tion in N Y. Came home and d. in Cornish.


SIR WALTER MERCER, a cousin of William, Sr., was b. in Scotland, came with the family of his cousin and was a member of the same firm of wool-workers.

2. JOHN II. MERCER, the son of Elizabeth and Mercer, was b. July 11, 1831. Lived in Claremont, Plainfield and lastly in Cornish where he d. Jan. 7, 1904. He m. April 29, 1862, Martha E. Plummer of Chelsea, Vt., who d. Sept. 2, 1877. She had two children.


i. HENRY H., b. July 22, 1864; m. Oct. 7, 1891, Minnie L. Goward of Cornish, dau. of Edwin O. and Mary (Redfield) Goward, b. July 5, 1867. He grad. from Kimball Union Academy, class 1885. A pattern designer.


ii. FANNIE M., b. March 29, 1869, and d. Sept. 13, 1870.


MERRILL.


JOHN MERRILL, son of Obadiah and Hannah Merrill was b. Nov. 15, 1756; m. first, Susanna , b. Sept. 27, 1757, and d. May 6, 1800; m. second, April 15, 1803, Lydia King of Croydon. He d. Sept. 23, 1837. They lived -. Their children, all by first wife, were:

2. JOHN? MERRILL (John1) was b. June 30, 1791, in --; m. first, March 3, 1819, Dorothy Bean of Grantham or Plainfield, b. Dec. 28, 1790, and d. July 17, 1850; m. second, Nov. 6, 1851, Julia Ann Avery of Plainfield, dau. of Samuel and Mercy (Wood) Avery, b. May 7, 1827. Mr. Merrill had no children by either wife. While living with his first wife they adopted a child (James S. Hunter) but never changed his name. (See Hunter.)


Mr. Merrill was a thrifty farmer and lived in the northeast part of the town in school district No. 16. It is said he was a soldier of the War of 1812. He d. Oct. 17, 1859. His wid. afterwards m. Norman E. Hebard. (See Hebard.)


MITCHELL.


EBEN MITCHELL was b. in Corinth, Vt., in 1809. He was the son of Eben and Sally (Eastman) Mitchell. He m. in 1839, Mary W. Allen of Croydon, dau. of Thomas and Lydia (Wright) Allen, b. Oct. 22, 1815. They came from Croydon to Cornish in 1860 and spent the rest of their lives here. Mr. Mitchell d. Sept. 12, 1875. His wife d. Jan. 4, 1894. Children, all b. in Croydon.
