4. SAMUEL STILLMAN6 ROBINSON (Everetts, Davids, Georges, Nathaniel2, George1) b. in Cornish, Jan. 25, 1824; m. Feb. 27, 1850, Eliza, dau. of Franklin and Dolly (Richards) Norton of Weathersfield, Vt., b. May 4, 1826, in Weathersfield and d. at Detroit, Mich., Feb. 10, 1889. Mr. Robinson left N. E. in 1853, for the Lake Superior copper country and spent the greater part of his life managing mining properties in various parts of the West. (See photo on page 319.)


He was a practical geologist and at one time could tell at sight the rock from any prominent mining camp in this country and in Mexico. He d. at Pontiac; Mich., June 10, 1904. His children were:


i. IDA EMELINE, b. June 27, 1851, at West Claremont; m. at Detroit, Mich., Edward Pitkin Bronson, ninth in descent from the emi- grant John Bronson, of Hartford and Framington, Conn. This family lived twenty years in St. Louis, Mo., ten in Nashville, Tenn., two in Chicago and now (1911) have been for six years in Chester, III. To this lady we are indebted for many records of this and the Williams family. Three children:


1. JOHN STANARD BRONSON, b. at St. Louis, Sept. 18, 1878; m. at Seabreeze, Fla., Louise Bianchi, dau. of John Bianchi of New York. Lives in St. Louis.


2. ETHEL ROBINSON BRONSON, . at St. Louis, Dec. 23, 1880; m. Sept. 26, -- , at Chester, Ill., Archibald McDougal Patterson of Savannah, Tenn. They had two children and Mrs. Patter- son and the little son, Archibald MeDougal, Jr., were lost by the sinking of the steamer Saltillo, at Glen Park, Mo.,

PHINEHAS ROOT, son of Eliakim and Eunice (Chapman) Root, was b. Aug., 12, 1775. They settled in Cornish in 1811, on the hill southeast of Windsor, Vt., still known as "Root's Hill." He m. March 22, 1804, Elsie Kenyon, dau. of Joseph and Catharine (Enos) Kenyon, who was b. in Plainfield, Nov. 23, 1784, and d. in Cornish, June 17, 186S. Mr. Root d. in Cornish, Jan. 14, 1859. Children:

ROWELL.


The Rowells were of English descent. Thomas1 and his son, Valentine?, came to America in 1638. Valentine's son Thomas3, b. Sept. 7, 1644; m. Sept. 8, 1670, Sarah Barnes and d. in 1684. He had a son, Valentine‹ b. in 1681, who m. in 1704, Hannah Sargent and d. Feb. 1, 1727, leaving a son Williams, b. Sept. 5, 1705, who m. Jan. 5, 1731, Elizabeth Chellis. They had a son, Williams, b. Feb. 10, 1736, who m. Hannah Morse. These were the ancestors of Rev. Joseph 7 Rowell, who was b. in Newton, May 15, 1767, and came to Cornish near the close of the 18th century and became the pastor of the Cong. Church. He m. Feb. 15, 1803, Hannah Chase of Cornish, dau. of Esq. Daniel and Mehitable (Kim- ball) Chase, b. Jan. 14, 1783, and d. Feb. 26, 1869, in Claremont. Mr. Rowell was ord. and installed pastor of the Cong. Church in Cornish, Sept. 24, 1800. On April 1, 1828, after a fruitful pastorate of nearly twenty-eight years, he was dismissed. It has been said of him by some, that the town of Cornish owes more to him than to any other man that ever lived in it, for its religious development, prosperity and good name; as from his ministry more than forty young people became ministers or foreign missionaries or the wives of such, 157 souls were converted and added to the church during his ministry, and the church was rendered a power for good. He was a faithful pastor and a bold and fearless preacher. He d. in Claremont Nov. 14, 1842, aged 75. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. ELIZA, b. Feb. 27, 1804; m. Aug., 1828, Charles Shedd, who was a teacher for some time in Kimball Union Academy. They rem. to Minn., where she d. Sept. 20, 1900.


ii. JONATHAN EDWARDS, b. June 3, 1806; m. - , Caroline White. A farmer and lived in Claremont, where he d. Jan. 31, 1854.


iii. MARIA CHASE, b. April 3, 1808; m. Aug. 19, 1834, Calvin Tracy. She was a teacher; d. Aug. 2, 1854.


iv. DANIEL CHASE, b. Aug. 25, 1810. Grad. at Kimball Union Academy in the class of 1833, and d. while a student of Amherst Col- lege, April 7, 1836.


v. MARTHA LAURENS, b. Nov. 9, 1812; m. Sept. 2, 1836, Rev. Edwin Locke, missionary (A. B. F. M.), Hawaiian Isles, where she d. Oct. 9, 1842.


vi. GEORGE BERKELEY, b. Jan. 22, 1815. Grad. Kimball Union Academy, class 1833; Amherst College, in class of 1837; A. T. S., class of 1841. Ord. Oct. 22, 1841, as missionary of the American Board to the Sandwich Isles. M. Jan. 22, 1842, Malvina J. Chapin of Newport, b. April 30, 1816, who graduated at Mt. Holyoke in 1842. They had seven children. He d. June 15, 1884, at Waimea, Kauai.

JOSIAH GILMAN ROWELL, the son of Levi and Mary (Lear) Rowell was b. in Newbury, July 5, 1829; m. first, in 1858, Maria B. Wilcox, b. in Lemp- ster, June, 1837, and d. July 11, 1870. She was dau. of John B. and Bet- sey Wilcox; m. second, Oct. 12, 1871, Sarah Comings of Cornish, dau. of William F. and Mercy (Jenne) Comings, b. Oct. 28, 1846. Mr. Rowell was a tanner in Gilsum, ten years. Soon after this, he came to Claremont where he first took charge of Charles H. Eastman's tannery for a few years and afterwards entered into partnership with his brother Granville in carriage manufacturing in Claremont. He came to Cor- nish in 1875 and settled as a farmer on the John M. Deming farm in the southeast part of the town in the "Hempyard" district. Here he remained till 1892 when he returned to Claremont, where he lived till he d. Nov. 12, 1909, aged 80 years, 5 months, 7 days. Children by first wife:

SAINT-GAUDENS.


AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS, the celebrated sculptor, was b. March 1, 1848, in Dublin, Ire. His father was b. in Southern France and his mother in Dub- lin. They came to Cornish about 1885 and purchased the old brick mansion long known as "Huggins Folly." This he greatly improved, intending it at first only as a summer residence. His artistic and cultured taste soon trans- formed the place into "a thing of beauty." This, together with his fame as an artist, attracted many friends of kindred tastes to his home and vicinity, and in this way it became "the center of the world to him," so that in 1898 he de- cided to make it his permanent home. He had, in 1877, mn. Augusta F. Homer of New York. They had but one child: Homer, b. Sept. 28, 1880, who is giving abundant promise of high rank in the literary world. Augustus Saint- Gaudens d. Aug. 3, 1907, aged 59 years, 5 months, 2 days. (For record of his life-work, see sketch.)


LOUIS SAINT-GAUDENS, a brother of Augustus, was b. in New York Jan. 7, 1854; m. in 1887, Louisa LePierre. She, with her new-born babe, d. the following year. He m. second, Oct. 7, 1898, Annetta Johnson. Their son Paul was b. June 18, 1900. In 1901, they came to Cornish to live. (See sketches of himself and wife.)


SANDERSON.


LEVI HARLOW SANDERSON was b. July 22, 1824, in Springfield, Vt. Came to Cornish about 1854; m. Sept. 14, 1848, Mary Jane Rawson of Cornish, dau. of William and Amanda (Lamberton) Rawson, b. Sept. 14, 1829, and d. May 14, 1899. Mr. Sanderson lived in town many years and later bought and settled on the David Westgate farm in Plainfield, near the Cornish line, where he d. Jan. 23, 1902. He was a farmer and stone- mason. Children:


i. JAMES F., b. Aug. 17, 1849. A stone-mason. Never m .; d. in Me., Aug. 19, 1899.


ii. FRANCIS P., b. May 12, 1852; m. Oct. 19, 1875, Kate Sullivan. He d. Nov. 6, 1888, leaving three children.


iii. HENRY L., b. Nov. 13, 1855; m. Aug. 30, 1892, Hattie Burr, then of Plainfield, dau. of William and Mary (Burr) Burr, b. Oct. 5, 1858. Three children. An officer in Vt. state prison at Wind- sor.


iv. LIZZIE M., b. March 31, 1858; m. Oct. 24, 1878, Newell Edward Huggins of Cornish. One son, Leon M., b. Dec. 7, 1879.

JOSEPH SARGENT was b. in 1803. Hem. - , Susan Wright. They had no children. Susan d. June 21, 1884, aged 81. He was a farmer and lived in the northeast part of the town. Was a very exemplary citizen and an ardent supporter of the Baptist Church. He d. Oet. 22, 1875, aged 72.


SARTEL.


JOSIAH SARTEL and Sally his wife came to town about the first of the 19th century. Settled on the river farm now (1908) owned and occupied by Luther E. Chadbourne. He d. in town Sept., 1843. His wife, b. in 1774 (?), d. in town Nov. 20, 1810. But little is now known of the fam- ily, aside from the town record which is as follows: Children:

ii. CALVIN, b. April 1, 1798. He evidently m. and lived in town, as the death list records the death of his wife and her child on the same day-May 15, 1845. He d. Aug. 26, 1866.

SAMUEL MILLS SHERBURNE was b. July 8, 1824, in Conway. He was the son of Henry and Mehitable S. (Merrill) Sherburne, a direet descendant of Henry Sherburne who settled in Portsmouth in 1632. After living in Montpelier and Northfield, Vt., Hanover and Claremont, N. H., he came to Cornish in 1858. He had m. first, May 1, 1851, Mary A. Dewey of Northfield, b. in 1840. She d. Nov. 10, 1865. M. second, June 27, 1868, Jane L. Weld of Cornish, dau. of Willard and Alice (Luther) Weld, b. May 9, 1831. No children. D. April 11, 1896. He d. Jan. 19, 1900, in Orange, Mass., aged 73. JOHN F. SISSON, son of Job Sisson, was b. in 1813, in Portsmouth, R. I. Was a carpenter and also a groceryman; m. Sept. 27, 1838, Emily A. Smith of Fall River, Mass., b. June 25, 1820, and d. July 20, 1907. In the spring of 1856, he, with his family, came to Cornish from Fall River and settled as a farmer on the Dea. John Chase farm. He d. the following winter on Jan. 10, 1857. His wid. remained on the place till her death. A few years after Mr. Sisson's death, she m. Erastus O. Cole and had children. (See Cole.) Children by J. F. Sisson, all b. in Fall River, Mass .:

After the war, he returned to Holyoke, Mass., and in 1870 eame to Cornish where he has since res. Has been honored by his townsmen in many ways; has been supervisor, town elerk, 1889-92. Represented the town in the legislature of 1890- 91. Was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. Was county treasurer four years, and for several years has been justice of the peace and notary public and engaged in settling estates, while at the same time is actively engaged in harness-making and in the sale of stable and carriage goods. Child:

3. CHARLES B.3 SISSON (John F.2, Job1) was b. Dec. 9, 1843. He enlisted in the Civil War. (See Military.) M. March 21, 1864, Lucy M. Cum- mings of Newport, dau. of Thomas and Mary (Davis) Cummings, b. Jan. 31, 1846. They lived chiefly in Keene, and Windsor, Vt. He was express agent in the latter place, where he d. Nov. 10, 1893. They were divorced after a few years. M. second, Dec. 5, 1894, Velzora E. Cummings of Plain- field, dau. of Joseph and Luella P. C. (Hebard) Cummings, b. March 28, 1873. Mr. Sisson lived on the homestead, dividing his time between farming and in the employ of his brother, William H. After the death of his mother he sold his farm and rem. to the Flat. Child by first wife and b. in Cornish:

Was educated at Kimball Union Academy and University of Ill. Fitted for the ministry under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Has held pas- torates in So. Londonderry, Ludlow and Waterbury, Vt., Muncie, Ind., Uniontown and Rankin, Pa. Was for a while president of the Pitts- burg Ministerial Association. His health failing by reason of excessive

labors, he retired from active pulpit and pastoral labors in 1909. Im- proving in health, the following year he was recalled to So. London- derry, Vt., where he first entered the ministry. Has received the honorary degrees of Ph. D. and D. D. Children, b. in Windsor, Vt .:

SMITH. ICHABOD BRANCH.


It has been the aim of the genealogist to find if possible a common ancestor for every family name, so that each member of that family may know their place in the family tree, and the number of their generation from a known ancestor. With the name Smith it has been found impossi- ble to bring them all into such relationship, yet two or three branches of them can trace to a common ancestor. The monumental record of Ichabod Smith, Sr., antedates all other Smiths in town by a full gen- eration. He was b. in 1738 and d. in Cornish Jan. 26, 1814, aged 76. Esther, his wife, was b. in 1738 and d. in Cornish, Oct. 23, 1829, aged 91. Their children, so far as ascertained, were:


i. JOSEPH, b. 1760 (?), d. Nov. 28, 1855, aged 95. Jerusha, his wife, b. 1748; d. Nov. 18, 1835, aged 87. In 1790 his family consisted of himself and wife, a son and a daughter.

2. DAVID? SMITH (Ichabod1) was b. about 1764, and d. in Cornish, July 4, 1801, aged 37. Lucy -, his wife, was b. in 1769, and d. June 7, 1850, aged 81. The date of their m. is unknown. In 1790 his family con- sisted of five persons, two males and three females. Children, as per town record:


i. REBECCA, b. Dec. 22, 1789; m. Nov. 12, 1818, Joseph Osgood of Barre, Vt.


ii. MOODY, b. Oct. 27, 1791; m. Feb. 26, 1818, Betty Comings of Cor- nish, dau. of Col. Benj. and Mary (Cooper) Comings, b. April 3, 1791, and d. Aug. 17, 1869. No children. He d. July 6, 1856.


iii. DAVID, JR., b. Dec. 22, 1793.


iv. MARSHALL, b. Oct. 17, 1795; d. Nov. 29, 1811.

3. ICHABOD2 SMITH (Ichabod1) was b. in Fitchburg, Mass., Dec. 9, 1771; m. first, Nov. 10, 1791, Anna Bruce, b. in Hopkinton, Mass., Dec. 22, 1766, and d. in Cornish, Nov. 26, 1837. It is not known when they came to town yet one record says they were m. here. He was a farmer and set- tled on the farm since owned and occupied by Harrison Leslie. He also built a sawmill on his farm and operated it a portion of each year. He m. second, Clara Preston, in 1838, in Windsor, Vt. She was b. in 1792, and d. Sept. 2, 1853. Children, all by first wife, and b. in Cornish:

ii. ANNA, b. Feb. 29, 1795; m. Jan. 10, 1820, Samuel Luey. Five chil- dren. (See Luey.) She d. Jan. 12, 1860, in Concord.

V. ESTHER, b. Dec. 23, 1802. She never m. but lived on the homestead all her life. She was the genealogist of the family. She d. Feb. 13, 1865.

4. GIDEON? SMITH (Ichabod1) was b. Nov. 6, 1773; m. - , Lucy - who was b. Sept. 13, 1773, and d. Oct. 16, 1822. He d. July 19, 1834. Children, as per town records:

i. MARY A. ESTHER, b. June 26, 1820; m. Dec. 31, 1846, George W. Craigue. Lived in Concord. She d. March 14, 1908.


ii. CAROLINE ELIZABETII, b. Aug. 29, 1823; m. Feb. 28, 1870, Milton Ruggles of Windsor, Vt. He d. in 1882, since which time she has lived in Concord.


iii. HANNAII MARIA, b. Dec. 13, 1826; m. - , Sylvester Wood. She d. in Stoddard, in 1861.


7. iv. EDWIN HARVEY, b. March 9, 1829.
