REV. ALVAH7 SPAULDING (Abels, Benj.5, Isaacs, Andrew3-2, Edwardi) b. in Townsend, Mass., Sept. 9, 1807, and d. May 11, 1868, in Weathersfield, Vt. He fitted for college in Meriden in class of 1827. Grad. at Am- herst College in class of 1831, Andover Theological Seminary in 1834. After preaching several months in Troy and Chesterfield, he was invited to preach in Cornish, where after three months' "probation" he was ord. Oct. 1, 1835. He m. Nov. 13, 1835, Ambra Tower of Fitzwilliam, b. May 26, 1812. He remained pastor of the Cong. Church in Cornish

nearly thirty years. His duties also included the care and manage- ment of the parsonage farm. In this he was eminently successful, for as a tidy and thrifty farmer, he had few equals. Was dismissed Feb. 7, 1865, to accept a call from the Cong. Church at Weathersfield, where he was installed June 28, 1865. Was a man of cheerful disposi- tion, genial manners and possessed a fine mind. Was a kind pastor and faithful preacher. His theology was thorough and clear, giving promi- nence to the doctrines of sin and atonement. His body, and also that

They had six children, most of them b. in Cornish; the rest in Hartland, Vt. The two succeeding generations, and their families res. in Vt.
SILOAM S.6 SPAULDING (Jesses-4, Nathaniel3, Joseph?, Edward1) was one of nine children of Jesse and Hannah (Farnum) Spaulding, b. March 9, 1803, in Plainfield. He m. March 24, 1831, Mahala Silloway, dau. of William and Abigail (Jenney) Silloway, b. March 15, 1812. They came to Cor- nish in April, 1839, and spent the remainder of their lives, living in the two-story, brick house, south of the Flat, built and formerly occupied by Dr. Roswell Leavitt. He was a successful farmer, honest, quiet and unpretending. He d. March 13, 1885. His wife survived him but eight days, dying March 22, 1885. A singular coincidence of their lives is

ANDREW SPAULDING, a brother (?) of Dyer, and Abigail Martin, his wife, came from Conn. and lived in town during many of its earliest years. The census of 1790 says his family at that date consisted of three adult males and four females. Their children were:

College in 1842 and from the medical dept. in 1848. Was principal of New Ipswich Academy two years. Since 1848 a successful practitioner of medicine at Weathersfield, Conn. He m. first, Nov. 23, 1847, Caroline C. Kimball of Cornish, dau. of Wm. R. and Eliza (Dorr) Kimball, b. Dec. 6, 1821, and d. Sept. 12, 1866. He m. second, June 7, 1869, Jane M. Spaulding, dau. of Dr. James Spaulding of Montpelier, Vt. Had five chil- dren by first wife, and one by the second. Eliza Warner d. Oct. 3, 1845, aged 47.
SQUIRES.
JUSTUS SQUIRES was b. in 1770. His record, and that of his family are very incomplete. He m. first, Oct. 27, 1796, Peggy Mason. She d. in Cor- nish. They lived a few years in a house on the David Richardson farm, now owned and occupied by Norman C. Penniman. A record from Keene history says he m. second, Nov. 27, 1817, Prudence Carpenter of Troy. No further record is found of him till he became an inmate of Cornish Almshouse, where he d. May 6, 1842. Children as far as known, were all by first wife, order of birth uncertain:
i. JUSTUS, JR., b. -. A man of kindly disposition, but had an unfor- tunate propensity for stealing. He spent a considerable por- tion of his life in prison where he is said to have d. somewhere in the fifties. Sometime during his early manhood he m. Matilda Farrington of Cornish, dau. of Benj. and Theda (Bartlett) Farrington. No children, so far as known. Further record of his wife is not known.

STEARNS.
DANIEL STEARNS, said to be the first of the name in town, was b. in 1756. He served in the Revolutionary War. Was twice married, yet but little record of his wives can be found. One of them, probably the last, d. March 18, 1847, aged 77. He was a farmer, settled and lived in town nearly thirty years, and finally lived in Newport with his dau. Phebe, where he d. May 4, 1849, aged 93. Children, most, if not all, b. in Cornish :

i. CHARLES SPAULDING, b. June 16, 1820; m. first, Augusta Gile, April 30, 1849. She was b. Nov. 5, 1825, and d. Jan. 9, 1851; m. sec- ond, May 18, 1851, Marion Cross of Claremont, b. Feb. 16, 1824. She had two children: 1. Mary J., b. May 5, 1858; d. Oct. 1, 1894. (Suicide.) 2. Charles O., b. Sept. 9, 1859. Lives in Claremont; twice m. Mr. S. enlisted in the Civil War, and d. in service Sept. 17, 1863, in S. C.

In his boyhood Mr. Stearns received a severe kick from a horse in his face which ever after left him disfigured. He d. in Unity, Sept. 11, 1895.

July 4, 1852, Catharine Elizabeth Lane of Newport, dau. of Jared and Mary (Stoddard) Lane, b. Feb. 3. 1829. He was a soldier in the Civil War. (See Military.) Lived chiefly in Plainfield, where he d. Jan. 20, 1907. Children:
i. MARY JANE, b. June 3, 1853; m. first, July 3, 1872, Henry B. Howe and by him had two children: 1. Jennie E., b. in 1873. 2. Henry B., b. in 1875. Mr. Howe d. April 7, 1878. M. second, Oct. 16, 1881, George W. Doyle, and by him had one child, George Curtis, b. in 1SS4. Live in Plainfield.
ii. GEORGE E., b. Nov. 28, 1855; m. March 3, 1890, Emma Woodard of East Plainfield. No children. Live in East Plainfield where he d. Feb. 18, 1910.

STEVENS.
JOB STEVENS, a great-grandson of John Stevens, secretary of Charles the First of England, fled to America and settled in Plainfield, Conn. His grand- son, John, emigrated from there to Plainfield, N. H., in 1765. He with others had obtained the grant of the township of Plainfield. He settled on a large farm on the Connecticut river, midway between Lebanon and Cornish. He m. - , Experience Hoyt. They had eight children, four sons and four daughters. One of the sons, Job, was b. in Plainfield, Conn., June 28, 1752, and d. in Plainfield, N. H., March 31, 1812. He had m. Aug. 24, 1780, Elizabeth Chase of Cornish, dau. of Thomas and Mary (Hall) Chase, b. Dec. 10, 1760, and d. in Cornish, March 31, 1850. They had nine children:
