BLAKE.


REV. J. M. BLAKE, a son of Royal Blake, was b. in Sanbornton in 1810. Was one of a family of seven children; m. first, Harriet Augusta Burnham, who d. childless, about 1850; m. second, July 1, 1852, Susan G. Burnham, a half sister of his first wife. He was a Methodist preacher, but of frail constitution. Came to Cornish about 1855, supposedly sent by the Methodist Conference. While here his health gradually failed and he was obliged to give up preaching; d. July 24, 1858, aged 39. His wid. d. Dec. 6, 1874, aged 44. Both buried in Cornish. Children:


i. JOHN PARKER, b. 1853; d. Aug. 15, 1856, aged 3; buried in Cornish.

HISTORY OF CORNISH.


CURTIS H. BLAKE, a brother of Rev. J. M. Blake, was b May 1, 1825, and came to town in Feb., 1856. He had m. Sept. 17, 1850, Dorothy Wil- liams of Lowell, Mass. After living brief periods in several places in town they settled on the place near D. H. Hilliards. Here they remained until near the elose of their lives, when they removed to the Jesse O. Wyman farm just previously owned and occupied by James F. Tasker. Here they spent their last days. He was a farmer, an upright, honest man. He d. Jan. 19, 1905. Dorothy d. April 12, 1901. Children:

BLANCHARD.


DR. JOHN SABINE BLANCHARD was the son of Robert and Jemima (Chapman) Blanchard. He was b. Aug. 10, 1805, in Canaan. Having prepared him- self for his profession as a physician he located and first began his prac- tice at Cornish Flat in 1829. He continued there until about 1843, when he rem. to Meriden, where he still continued in practice, as his health would permit, until his death, Aug. 26, 1861. (See Med. Dept.) Nov. 8, 1832, he m. Louisa Jaekson of Cornish, dau. of Judge Elcazer and Lois (Corbin) Jackson, b. Jan. 6, 1813, d. May 17, 1872. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. EVELYN LOUISA, b. Oet. 17, 1834. Graduated Kimball Union Acad- emy in 1853. Spent several years teaching in Ill. and Mass. City missionary for three years on the Congregational board in Boston. She m. Duncan of Resides in Paw- tucket, R. I.


ii. HENRIETTA ISABELLA, b. June 12, 1838. Educated at Kimball Union Academy; graduated in class of 1856; m. Nov. 10, 1857, Samuel Bean of Meriden, son of Samuel and Betsey Bean. Three ehil- dren: 1. BRADLEY.


JAMES BRADLEY was b. in Rockport, Me., in -. Came first to Plainfield and afterwards to Cornish where he lived the greater part of his life. He was a very useful man. Was tax collector in Cornish in 1846, 1852, 1854, 1855, 1856. Selectman 1847, 1849 and 1850. Justice of the peace, auctioneer and deputy sheriff, and was also a Free Mason. He kept the hotel on the Flat many years. He m. - in Plainfield, Mary Heywood of Plainfield but formerly of Charlestown, dau. of Eleazer and Dorcas (Whittaker) Heywood, b. -. They left Cornish about 1860 and settled in Claremont and spent the rest of their lives there. He d. about 1866 (?). His wid. d. in 1873. They had but one child, a dau., Georgianna, b. about 1830. She never m. but d. - , in Claremont.


ISAIAH BRADLEY, b. in 1762. Came to Cornish -; m. - , Mary Dustin, b. in 1764, and d. Nov. 23, 1835. He d. June 14, 1843. A record says that Mary Dustin was a granddaughter of Gen. Israel Putnam.

Mrs. O. P. Fitch of Claremont, a descendant, has a punch bowl and plate from his family. The list of children is incomplete; we give the following:

ii. LOUISA, b. June 26, 1802; m. Jan. 1, 1837, Benjamin Ayers of Cornish. Three children. (See Ayers.) She d. Oct. 20, 1881.


iii. SARAH C., b. Feb. 16, 1807; m. May 12, 1836, Alonzo Holbrook. Four children. (See Holbrook.) She d. March 12, 1877, in Claremont, buried in Cornish.


BRECK.


WILLIAMI BRECK, who traces his ancestry back to Edward Breek, who emi- grated from Eng. in 1632, was b. in Boston May 11, 1745, and was a merchant there until 1792, when he came to Claremont and bought the present Breck homestead in West Claremont of a Mr. Dickinson. Here he res. until his death, Nov. 22, 1819. He m. July 11, 1771, Margaret Thomas. She d. Feb. 4, 1820. Had nine children. Henry2, fourth son and eighth child of William, was b. Feb. 26, 1786, in Boston. Came with his father to Claremont, being then six years of age. While young he opened a store in Croydon, and in April, 1832, he opened a branch store at Cornish Flat. Subsequently he disposed of his interest in the Croydon store, but continued the business at the Flat until 1848, when he retired to the Breck homestead in West Claremont. Here he spent the re- mainder of his life, dying July 10, 1872. He was twice m .; first, Nov. 4, 1818, to Keziah Marsh of Grantham, who d. June 29, 1826; second, Oct. 4, 1827, to Sarah Town, daughter of Moses and Betsey (Woodbury) Town, b. Feb. 27, 1807, d. June 22, 1889. Children by Keziah Marsh, all b. in Croydon:

Mr. B. followed the mercantile business during most of his life; first with his father, then with his brother, John, at Cornish Flat; then by himself in Weathers- field, Vt., and afterwards at Claremont. He was of a very active and energetic temperament and of large business capac- ity. He d. in Springfield, Mass., July 25, 1886.


iii. HENRY, JR., b. Aug. 25, 1822; m. April 30, 1846, Elizabeth D. Gustin, b. in Cornish June 22, 1823; early rem. to Mass .; lived in Newton and Natick; was a market gardener. His wife d. Aug. 26, 1897. He d. in Natick March 16, 1908.


iv. WILLIAM, b. Dec. 17, 1825. Was in trade with his brothers at Cor- nish Flat prior to 1852; then, in company with sixteen others, he went to Cal. during the prevalence of the gold fever; was quite successful financially and, after eight years, returned and settled

in Claremont. For several years he was a director in Claremont National Bank, Sullivan Savings Institution, and the Sugar River Paper Mill Co. Represented the town in the N. H. legis- lature ISS3-85. He m. Oct. 7, 1868, Susan L. Farwell of Clare- mont, dau. of Geo. N. and Sarah (McDonald) Farwell. They had one dau., Sarah, who m. Dec. 19, 1906, F. W. Burlingham and had one dau., Susan, b. in Aug., 190S. Mr. Breck d. in Claremont Nov. 10, 1889.

ix. CHARLES P., b. in Cornish Jan. 16, 1844; m. June 14, 1871, Mary Roberts. They lived on the old Breck homestead, where he was an extensive stock raiser and dealer of the same. He d. Oct. 3, 1901, his death being due in part to the vast amount of labor connected with exhibiting his large herd at several of the agricultural fairs in N. E. His wid., Mary R., again m., Dec. 2, 1905, Charles Stone of Windsor, Vt. Mr. Breck and his wife, Mary, had one son, Stephen Roberts, who m. June 26, 1902, Sarah T. Emerson of Claremont. They had a dau., Margaret Tyler, b. April 5, 1906, in Claremont, and another, Mary Eliza- beth, b. Nov. 30, 1907.


3. JOHN THOMAS3 BRECK (Henry?, William1) b. Nov. 30, 1819. At the age of twelve he entered hisfather'sstore as clerk at Cornish Flat, in which capac- ity he served until 1841, excepting three years spent at Kimball Union Academy. He then purchased the stock of goods of his father and with his brother, Robert, first as clerk and afterwards as partner, continued until 1847, when, the latter leaving, his brother, William, entered into partner- ship with him, which relation lasted until 1852, after which he continued in trade until 1868. He then sold out his stock of goods. Retiring from mercantile life he rem. to Lebanon where he had purchased a fine farm. Here he devoted himself to agricultural pursuits, and the rearing of choice Jersey cattle. In 1891 he disposed of his farm and rem. to Leb- anon village. In both Cornish and Lebanon he has enjoyed the confi- dence of his townsmen who have repeatedly favored him with positions of honor and trust. In Cornish he was town clerk thirteen years, ending in 1868, and town treasurer four years following. In Lebanon he repre- sented the town in the legislature of 1874-75. All his vast business relations with his fellowmen were ever marked by honesty and upright- ness, which together with his social and genial manners made him many

friends. He m. Aug. 25, 1851, Sophia T. Bryant of Cornish, dau. of Sylvanus W. and Sophia (Woodward) Bryant, b. June 4, 1827. He d. in Lebanon Jan. 6, 1903. Children, all b. in Cornish:

BRYANT.


The Bryants are of English descent. Stephen' Bryant from the west of Eng. came to Duxbury, Mass., as early as 1643. The poet, William Cullen Bryant, was a direct descendant from him in the sixth generation. The four genera- tions succeeding Stephen1 were John?, Samuel3-4, Sylvanus5.


1. SYLVANUS5 BRYANT, m. Mary Sears and they were the ancestors of all of the name in Cornish. Records are wanting to show the full list of their children and dates of birth. They were all b. in Plymouth, Plympton, and Pembroke, Mass. So far as they are known they were as follows:

These brothers subsequently all came to Cornish to live, and, with their descendants have added much to the enterprise and prosperity of the town.


2. SYLVANUS6 BRYANT (Sylvanus5, Samuel4-3, John?, Stephen1) was b. May 5, 1758. He served during the Revolutionary War, first as a private from June 27, 1776, to June 7, 1777, in Capt. William Weston's Co., sent for the defense of the harbor of Plymouth, then enlisting and serving three years in the 12th Batt. of Mass. forces under command of Col. Gamaliel Bradford. Soon after the elose of the war, he settled in Cornish, where he m. Judith Chase, dau. of Moses and Hannah (Brown) Chase, b. Nov. 26, 1764, and d. Oct. 2, 1811. They lived a little north of the center of the town on the farm more recently owned and occupied by Joseph B. Comings. Mr. Bryant d. Oct. 12, 1832. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. JOHN, b. Aug. 31, 1784; m. - , Mary Ann Dunean of Plainfield, dau. of Robert and Hannah (Emerson) Duncan, b. March 21, 1800, and d. Dec. 21, 1890. They lived in Meriden. Mr. Bryant

built the first hotel there, called the Meriden House, and he with his brothers, Levi and George, built the brick block called Bryant's Block and opened a store there, where they continued in trade many years. He owned and lived on the Kimball estate, where he d. in 1855 (?). Four children, all sons and b. in Meriden: 1. John D., b. Oct. 21, 1829. Harvard College 1853; lawyer in Boston. 2. Daniel Kimball, b. Sept. 20, 1831. 3. James D., b. -. 4. William H., b. - , 1837 (?). A soldier in the Civil War who d. in the service. The Wm. H. Bryant Post,. G. A. R., No. 63, was named in his honor.


ii. MOSES, b. May 21, 1786; m. - , Tirzah Kingsbury, dau. of Asa and Sarah Kingsbury of Plainfield, b. May 25, 1796, and d. Oet. 14, 1854. He kept the hotel in Meriden several years. In 1844 they rem. to Wis., where he spent the rest of his life in farming. Six children. He d. in Waukesha, Wis., in 1881. They buried a son, Henry, in town, who d. July 31, 1838.

V. LEVI, b. March 20, 1792; m. - , Susan Farnham of Plainfield, dau. of Amos and Lydia Farnham. They lived in Meriden, where he was engaged in trade with his brothers. He built the large brick dwelling, south side of Main St., below the academy, where he d. Dec. 4, 1879. Two children: 1. Susan Farnham b. -. She never m., and d. in Meriden. 2. Darwin, b. -. Lived in Memphis, Tenn.


vi. GEORGE, b. Oct. 28, 1794, and d. July 10, 1879. He also lived in Meriden. Associated for a time with his brothers in trade; m. Oct. 6, 1836, Hannah Roberts of Plainfield, dau. of Jesse and Hannah (Main) Roberts, b. in 1809, and d. April 18, 1839: One dau., Hannah, b. Feb. S, 1839, who m. Aug. 8, 1864, Chandler Bridgman of Hanover. Mr. Bryant was also engaged in the pension and insurance business. Was state and county justice many years. Was a quiet and unpretending man, yet of excellent ability and sound judgment.

4. WILLIAM BRYANT, b. in 176-, said to be a brother of Sylvanus and Israel, lived in town several years near the close of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. It appears that he was twice m. but there is no record of those events, or of wives' birth or parentage, and no deseend- ants of the family are at present known. His first wife's name was Elizabeth . The next wife's name was Hannah -. Their children were as follows and b. in town: By Elizabeth.

6. SYLVANUS? BRYANT (Sylvanus6-5, Samuel4-3, John?, Stephen1) was b. June 14, 1790; m. Jan. 5, 1825, Sophia Woodward of Plainfield, dau. of Gideon and Zerviah Woodward, b. June 3, 1800, and d. Sept. 3, 1890. Mr. Bryant was a farmer and drover, a stirring, energetic man. He lived several years on the Bryant homestead, then a number of years on the Dea. John Chase farm, and finally built and settled on the Flat where he d. Aug. 17, 1864. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. JOHN WOODWARD, b. Nov. 13, 1825; d. Aug. 11, 1826.


ii. SOPHIA TYLER, b. June 4, 1827; m. Aug. 25, 1851, John Thomas Breck, merchant at Cornish Flat. Four children. Lived in Lebanon after 1868, where Mr. Breck d. Jan. 6, 1903. (See Breck.)


iii. JUDITH CHASE, b. Dec. 10, 1829; m. Oct. S, 1855, Charles Edwin Jackson of Cornish. Two children, daus. (See Jackson.) Lived on the Jackson homestead until the death of her husband, Feb. 10, 1904. Since 1894 she has been totally blind and now resides with her daus.


iv. GEORGE WINCHESTER, b. Oct. 14, 1831. In April, 1851, he joined a company of men who went to California at the time the gold fever was raging. He spent the rest of his life there. Hed .-. V. SARAH ANN, b. Jan. 5, 1834; she never m .; taught school many years; ministered to her parents while they lived, and d. June 19, 1899. A devoted member of the Baptist Church, to which she left a small legacy at her decease.
