REV. JAMES WELLMAN was b. in Lynn End, now Lynnfield, Mass., May 10, 1723. Was a graduate of Harvard, in class of 1744. He was the ances- tor of all the name who have since lived in town. His first settlement in the ministry occurred Oct. 7, 1747, when he was ordained over the Second Cong. Church in Sutton, Mass. The church was newly organ- ized with a membership of seventy and gave a promise of a useful career. He, however, served the church but thirteen years. His connection with the church had not been pleasant, especially during his last years, and his ministry had been prosecuted under considerable difficulty, owing to differences that had arisen between him and his people. A council was summoned which recommended his resignation. He accordingly resigned and was dismissed July 22, 1760. Mr. Wellman was a man of high moral tone, inflexible and outspoken in all matters of conscience, which frequently contributed to alienation of affection between him and his people. A man of great ability, a fine scholar for 27-11

On the 14th of April, 176S, they called a meeting of the town to take action about settling a minister among them. The meeting occurred on the 28th following. At this meeting they voted to extend a call to
