He was a machinist and lived in Boston. While there in 1847, he sent his wife and children to Cornish to live near his aged father. On July 27, 1848, a fearful thunder storm arose. The mother, with five of her youngest children, becoming fearful, left their own house and fled for shelter and companionship to the house of her father-in-law, Captain Dodge. A strong gale swept down the ravine from the northwest and destroyed the house in which they were. A drenching rain immediately followed. The old gentle- men and his housekeeper were unhurt. The mother with three of her children were found dead. A boy was found alive, but fearfully sealped and pinioned in the débris, but the most wonderful circumstance con- nected with it was the little baby in its mother's arms, sheltered by her crushed form, was alive and unharmed. The sad intelligence was con- veyed as soon as possible to the bereaved husband and father, who, with characteristic faith and Christian composure said, "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, and blessed be the name of the Lord." The funeral rites were impressive and solemn. A pulpit was erected outside the church, midway between the two audience rooms, so the speaker could be heard by those erowding both rooms, as well as by crowds assembled outside. Dr. Nahum P. Foster, pastor of the Baptist Church, preached the sermon. The occasion and event ereated a deep im- pression.
