TAYLOR.
CAPT. JOSEPH TAYLOR was b. in Dunstable, in 1730. His record is somewhat peculiar yet very creditable to himself. He was possessed of a fearless spirit coupled with a love for adventure that found ample opportunity for development in the times and circumstances of his life. He was in the French and Indian Wars, in 1745 and 1755 where he rendered impor- tant service. While hunting in Maine in 1755, he was captured by the Indians, marched to Canada and sold for forty dollars to a French gen- tleman with whom he lived four years. He then was given his liberty and he returned to Dunstable. In Feb., 1760, he received a lieutenant's commission to serve in the Co. of Capt. Lovel in Col. John Goffe's Regt. raised for making a conquest of Canada. This Regt. was under command of Gen. Haveland whose headquarters that spring were at Crown Point. As soon as Lieut. Taylor was known to Gen. Haveland, he was detached from his own Regt. and sent forward at the head of the vanguard to guide them to Montreal. He also aided Rev. Mr. Ripley to Canada to procure young Indians for the purpose of educating them at Dartmouth College at Hanover. During the Revolutionary War he was active on the part of his country. Was often sent into Canada on secret expeditions. In Jan., 1776, he was appointed Capt. in Col. Bedel's Regt. with orders to go to Canada and enlist men, which he did, going to Quebec where he was of great service in uniting the Cana- dians to his country's cause. In 1779, he aided Gen. Hazen through the woods to Canada. He understood the French language and had an excellent memory. He recollected almost every event of the earlier part of his life, especially when he was in captivity, and the interviews with his master and other French gentlemen, after the surrender of Montreal. He always spoke of being kindly treated by both French and Indians. Capt. Taylor retained his faculties until a few hours before his death. He d. in Cornish, March 17, 1813, aged 83 years. He is buried in Cornish. On his tombstone is written: "This is the grave of a Hero."
During the year 1767, at a time when not engaged in his country's service, he came to Claremont, which place he made his home until about 1779, when he came to Cornish to live and res. on the farm afterwards owned and occupied by Samuel Ayers.
