HALL.
The genealogy of some of the families of Cornish corresponds largely with the records of the same families in adjoining towns. Kinship had no regard for town lines. Members of the same families settled on both sides of these lines. The Hall family and several others present apt illustrations of this. The genealogist found that in order to do justice to those who have res.

in Cornish, it was necessary to record many families entire, even if a portion of its members were not at all times, or perhaps never res. of Cornish. This will aid any in adjoining towns desiring to write up a record of those families in those towns.
Three distinct families of the name of Hall have settled in and about Cornish. These came from the towns of Medford, Yarmouth and Rehoboth, Mass., hence are called respectively the Medford, Yarmouth and Rehoboth branches. The Yarmouth branch of Halls also traces back to a John Hall, who in 1630 came from Eng. to Charlestown, Mass. He was father of Dea. He graduated at Harvard in 1724; received honorary degree of D.D. from Dartmouth in 1777; was pastor of the church in Sutton nearly sixty years, or till his death.
Special mention is made of him, for, from his church in Sutton, emigrated many of the pioneers who settled the town in Cornish, some of his own family being of the number. He was a man of noble bearing, intellectual vigor and fervent piety. Was several times "called" to settle over more prominent churches, but he preferred to remain in Sutton because of the mutual love and

affection existing between pastor and people. His private diary that he kept during much of his pastorate, has been preserved and is a very interesting document, revealing his eccentricities as well as his fatherly care over his church in Sutton, and his deep interest in those leaving it for the new settle- ment in Cornish.
Who knows how much Cornish is indebted to the strong faith and prayers of this eminent divine, in its religious constitution?
