WHITTLESEY.


NEWTON WHITTLESEY was b. Oct. 31, 1777, in Litchfield or Wallingford, Conn. Came to Cornish when a young man. Served as clerk in the store of Daniel Chase, and later was in trade several years by himself. M. first, July 4, 1800, Esther Robbins, of Canaan, Conn., b. Jan. 29, 1777, and d. April 15, 1818; m. second, May 15, 1821, Maria Swift Mills of Sutton, Mass., dau. of Rev. Edmund and Abigail (Moore) Packard Mills, b. Dec. 2, 1794, d. Sept., 1894, in Raleigh, N. C. Mr. Whit- tlesey d. in Claremont May 23, 1844. He was a man of great business capacity. It was often said of him that he seldom, if ever, made mistakes in any mathematical reckoning. He represented the town in the legislatures of 1816, 1817, 1818, and 1819. Children:

WILLIAM WHITTLESEY, a brother of Newton Whittlesey, was b. July 28, 1788, in Litehfield, Conn .; and d. in Auburndale, Mass., Sept. 28, 1855. Was cashier of the Millbury (Mass.) bank for several years. After this he came to Cornish and joined his brother in business at the Flat, and also lived down near the river. He m. Oct. 27, 1815, Abbie Moore Mills, a sister of his brother Newton's wife, b. in Sutton, Mass., May 16, 1793, and d. in Boston April 3, 1864. Children, supposed to have been b. in Cornish:

FRANK D. WILEY, b. in Langdon July 17, 1855. Res. several years on the Joshua Wyman farm as a farmer, then rem. to Claremont and went into the livery business. He m. Jan. 25, 1881, Lizzie M. 3. STEPHEN2 WILLIAMS (Samuel:) was b. April 21, 1782, in Dublin, and came to Cornish about 1809 and settled on the Enos Child farm. M. Feb. 19, 1801, Betsey White, then of Dublin, dau. of Thomas and Mary (French) White, b. April 11, 1781, and d. Sept. 13, 1859, in Cornish. He was deputy sheriff in Sullivan County for fifteen years. He d. March 5, 1860. Children, the first three b. in Dublin, the rest in Cor- nish:

i. ELLA E., b. Oct. 28, 1856, in Cornish; m. Feb. 2, 1878, Wells H. Jones of Cornish. Three children. (See Jones.) She d. June 25, 1899.


WILLIAM WILLIAMS, the son of Theophilus and Ruth (Brown) Williams, was b. in Providence, R. I., Feb. 25, 1858; m. March 18, 1785, Susanna Pond of Bellingham, Mass. She d. Aug. 11, 1843, aged 86. He d. Aug. 13, 1841, aged 83. They both d. and were buried in Croydon. He was a Revolutionary soldier, serving in the Continental Army one year. It is also said that he served on the sea, and was captured by the British, carried to Havana, from whence he escaped and made his way into the service again. It is not known when he came to Cornish, but probably soon after the war, where he lived till enfeebled by age. They went to Croydon and lived with their dau. Nancy Metcalf. Children :


i. JULIA, b. April 20, 1786; m. April 17, 1805, Everett Robinson of Cor- nish. Eight children. (See Robinson.) She d. Jan. 24, 1826.

ORVILLE BREWSTER WILLIAMS, the son of Orville and Amy (Gates) Williams, was b. in Morristown, Vt., Aug. 30, 1830. He m. March 27, 1855, Mariam R. Sargent, dau. of Trueworthy and Mary (Abbott) Sar- gent, b. in 1832, and d. June 20, 1895. He first came to Plainfield where they lived several years. They came to Cornish and settled on a river farm, where they lived several years. His parents, both dying in 1875, were buried in Cornish. He had formerly been a successful peddler, now became the successful farmer. Was one of the selectmen of Cor- nish in 1884-85. He d. April 25, 1885. His death was caused by the kiek of a horse. A few years after his death, the family rem. to Wind- sor, Vt. Children, all b. in Plainfield :


i. CARRIE ARDELLA, b. Oct. 1, 1857. A teacher of large experience and success. Unm.


ii. MARY IDA, b. Jan. 11, 1863; m. March 27, 1884, Alfred Fitch of Cornish. Five children. (See Fitch.)

WILSON.


ROBERT and PATIENCE WILSON early became residents of the town. He was h. in 1741, and d. Oct. 9, 1822, in Cornish. His wife, b. in 1740, also d. there Aug. 25, 1828. Children, as per town record:


i. ZADOCK, b. Dec. 2, 1769; d. May 21, 1780.


ii. TAMISON, b. May 5, 1772; m. May 2, 1796, George Cook of Cornish. She d. April 18, 1849. Nine children. (See Cook.)

D. GERRY WITHERELL came to Cornish from Chazy, N. Y., in 1898. Settled on the farm recently owned by Joseph B. Comings. He was b. July 5, 1855, in Chazy, N. Y. Was the son of David J. and Cynthia (Wait) Witherell. M. Jan. 12, 1887, Sylvia Wheeler, b. Jan. 26, 1857, dau. of Horace and Alice (Irish) Wheeler. Children:


i. HARRY D., b. June 17, 1888, in Sheldon, No. Dakota. Graduated Kimball Union Academy, 1908. Studying medicine (1910).

1. REUBEN WOOD was b. in 1753, in Scituate, R. I. He was m. there but the name of his wife is not known. She d. about 1792, in R. I., leaving four little children. He m. second, -, Merey Phillips of Scituate. She was b. in 1772 and d. in Cornish Nov. 1, 1856, aged 84. He was a soldier of the Revolution from R. I., rendering service at the Battle of Bunker Hill and presumably, at other historie points. They came to Cornish about 1793, soon after his second m., and settled on a farm. He was Dea. and a devout member of the Baptist Church in Cornish and a man highly esteemed. He d. Feb. 10, 1836. Children by first wife, all b. in R. I.


i. ROBERT, b. Jan. 2, 1783; m. Jan. 9, 1810, Esther Smith of Cornish. Moved away. He d. in Jan., 1835.

Dec. 14, 1895; m. second, April 1, 1897, Mrs. Marion P. (Bartlett) Martin, formerly of Cornish, and dau. of Gilman M. and Angeline (Comings) Bartlett, b. Oct. 2, 1861. Children by first wife only:


i. BERT A., b. April 4, 1867; m. April 4, 18SS, on his 21st birthday, Addie Maxham of Hartland, Vt. One son : Ralph H., b. Aug. 24, 1895.


ii. ANGIE L., b. Dec. 30, 1881; m. Aug. 30, 1900, William Fairman, son of Joseph Fairman of Windsor, Vt. They live in Springfield, Mass.


CAPT. JOSEPH WOOD was b. in Lebanon March, 1789. He was the oldest son of Joseph Wood, the centenarian of Lebanon. He m. first, Sarah W. Dana of Pomfret, Vt. She d. in Plainfield, in 1825, leaving one son, Joseph Wood, Jr., who d. Aug., 1844, aged 28; m. second, in 1827, Mary Smith, dau. of Judge James Smith of Grantham. They rem. from Plainfield to Cornish in 1834, and settled on a river farm. They lived here many years. He was a prosperous farmer, kept a hotel, represented the town in the legislature of 1852 and 1853. Later in life, he sold his farm in Cornish and rem. to Meriden to live with his son: where he d. Feb. 19, 1859. His wid. d. Jan. 7, 1866. They had one son : James S., b. Jan. 1, 1828, who m. June 12, 1855, Mary Fran- ces Cutler of Meriden, where they res. James S. Wood d. March 5, 1909. He left no children.


WOODBURY.


ISAIAH and Lois WOODBURY lived several years in town and had four children.


He d. Nov. 16, 1819. His wid. m. Oct. 10, 1821, Daniel Coburn, (second wife.) No record of her death. Children of Isaiah and Lois:

WRIGHT.


HORACE WRIGHT was b. March 12, 1809. He m. - , Mary Butman of Enfield, dau. of Amos and Marion (Heath) Butman, b. April 13, 1818. They came to Cornish about 185S and settled on a farm far up the moun- tain road east of the Flat, in "Poppy Squash" district. Here they both spent the rest of their lives. He was a farmer. He d. Jan. 2, 18SS. She d. Sept. 14, 1895. Children (the order may not be correct) :

ii. WILLIAM H., b. -. Never m. Enlisted in the Civil War and d. in the service. His funeral at the Flat was Oct. 26, 1862.


iii. JOHN B., b. Oct. 20, 1844; m. first, Dec. 25, 1868, Margaret L. Geer. He was a soldier in the Civil War; m. second, in 1906 (?) Mrs. - Whitney.

WYMAN.


FRANCIS1 WYMAN, with his brother, Lieut. John, were among the first to settle Woburn, Mass., about 1641. They were large landholders there, and their names often appear on legal writings of the town. From Francis1 all the Wymans of Cornish have descended. The generations following him are: William?, Edwards and Williams. Of this family, which resided in Pel- ham, three brothers, Joshuas, Jonathans and Jesses came and settled in Cor- nish and spent the remainder of their lives here.


1. JOSHUAS WYMAN, the eldest of the three, was b. Nov. 4, 1767, in Pelham. He m. in Pelham Sept. 9, 17SS, Miriam Richardson of Pelham, dau. of Joseph and Miriam (Hildreth) Richardson, b. Aug. 24, 1768. They were admirable specimens of the old Puritan character that has made New England what it is. They continued to live in Pelham till March, 1794, when they rem. to Cornish. He built the two-story brick house de- stroyed in 1905. He d. June 9, 1815. Being thus called to leave his fam- ily of eight living children, in the midst of a highly useful life, he caused them to assemble at his bedside, where he tenderly addressed them one by one on the great concerns of eternity, giving them such counsel as only a Christian father can give his children in a dying hour.


Of the wife and mother, her biographer says: "She was eminently worthy of such a husband. She outlived him more than thirty years, and brought up in the fear, love and service of God, her large fam- ily of children. She was a noble Christian woman. She managed with

great skill and success a large farm,-the farm now (1903) owned and occupied by Wilbur Quimby-and her house was always the abode of peace and joy. She looked well to the ways of her household and in due time, they all rose up and called her blessed. Nor has the blessed influence of her instructions, example and prayers been lost among her posterity." She d. Dec. 17, 1848, aged 80. Children, the first four b. in Pelham, the rest in Cornish:

"Mother, Home, Heaven, but Christ is all and in all."


v. SOPHIA, b. Feb. 5, 1799; m. Oct. 29, 1828, Daniel Dwight Chapin of Newport. One son and three daus.


4. vi. MILTON, b. March 7, 1801.


vii. EDWARD W., b. March 31, 1803; d. Nov. 16, 1803.


viii. EDWARD, b. Sept. 26, 1804; m. March 3, 1831, Cynthia Peck of Leb- anon. They lived in Newport. No children. He was a suc- cessful teacher of schools; a Maj. Gen. of the Militia; selectman six years; town representative in 1848; register of probate, five years; superintending school committee, and census enumera- tor in 1850. He d. April 4, 1864, aged 59.
