CROSS.
HORACE G. P. CROSS was b. Jan. 16, 1S21, in Piermont; came to Cornish in 1843 and settled on the Connecticut river road. Leaving his farm, he, with his brother, kept the Newport House at Newport till Jan. 6, 1860, when it was burned down. They rebuilt the same and conducted it until 1866, when he sold out and rem. to West Claremont, where he has had charge of the hotel since 1868. Much of this time his family have res. upon the farm in Cornislı. He m. first, Dec. 28, 1843, Orilla Spaulding, b. Oct. 27, 1812, and d. June 15, 1845; no issue; m. second, June 12, 1849, Mariah Reed, b. Oct. 8, 1820, and d. Oct. 21, 189S. Ile d. Feb. 26, 1903. Children :

ALONZO M. DAME was the son of Nathan H. and Nancy (Parker) Dame, b. August 15, 1852. After the death of his father, he with his mother, came to Cornish from Newport, Nov. 15, 1882, and have since res. here. Unm. His mother, Nancy Parker Dame, d. Oct. 17, 1900, aged 81-5-21.
DANA.
FRANCIS and ELEANOR DANA came from Roxbury, Mass., and lived in town several years prior to and during the Revolutionary War. After 1780 the family probably left town, as the records or cemeteries show no trace of the name after that date. Their children were:

PAUL DAVIDSON, the first of the name in Cornish, came from Waterford, Vt., about 1815. He entered the employ of Horace Weld, then a tanner at Cornish Flat. He m. July 30, 1817, Melissa Chase, dau. of Dea. John and Louisa (Joslyn) Chase, b. Feb. 13, 1793, and d. March 2, 1886. He d. -. Children:

DAVIS.
1. JESSE DAVIS was b. Nov. 22, 1800, in Springfield; m. June 17, 1824, Apphia Davis of New London, b. Jan. 18, 1804; d. Oet. 9, 1894. They came to Cornish in 1834 and settled on a farm north of the Flat near Plainfield line, where they remained till 1873, when they rem. to Meri- den and spent the rest of their lives with their son. Mr. Davis d. Oet. 18, 1891. They were conscientious and worthy people and members of the Baptist churches, both in Cornish and Meriden. Children :

v. JOHN COLBY, b. April 19, 1837, in Cornish; m. - , Helen Lewis of Plainfield, who d. in 1862. They had one child, Edward Lewis, who d. Oet. 23, 1864. About this time, without known cause, Mr. Davis suddenly left town and his whereabouts have since been unknown.
vi. FRANCENA A., b. Aug. 17, 1844, in Cornish; m. Feb. 13, 1862, David R. Davis of Sunapee, who d. Aug. 8, 1876. Three children. She d. March 29, 1880. Her death was caused by accidentally falling upon a broken chair while playing with her baby.
vii. ELLEN A., b. Jan. 11, 1848, in Cornish. She d. Oct. 13, 1864, of diph- theria. The contagious character of this disease was at this time little understood. This resulted in the death of three prom- ising little nephews of the deceased a few days afterwards.
2. JOSIA112 DAVIS (Jesse1) was b. Sept. 5, 1829, in Springfield; m. Nov. 25, 1855, Ellen S. Smart of Cornish, dau. of Joseph and Polly (Sanborn) Smart of Croydon, b. in Croydon Jan. 17, 1829. They lived in Cornish till 1862 and then rem. to Meriden and stayed 28 years. In 1890 they returned to town and res. on the Flat (1907). He served in the War of the Rebellion. (See Military.) Has been a school teacher of large experience, member of the school board several years, tax collector, etc. He represented the town in the legislature of 1900-01. Mrs. Davis d. Jan. 22, 1909. He m. second, July 14, 1909, Amy I. Hilliard of Cornish. Children, all b. in Cornish:

JOHN DAVIS was b. in Wales. Came to this country and settled in Greenland. It is not known how many children he had. His son, David?, was b. in Greenland Dec. 25, 1758. He m. - , Rachel -, who was b. in 1756, and d. in Cornish Dec. 1, 1831. They came to Cornish about 1782 and settled in the north part of the town, where they spent the rest of their lives. He d. She left two children, a son and a dau .; m. second, ---- , and by her had two children. She d. "many years ago." It is said that he again m. After living in town a few years he rem. to Rockford, Ill., where he spent the remainder of his life. He d. suddenly Dec. 18, 1901.
iii. MARY ANN, b. Sept. 7, 1821; m. Nov. 13, 1866, James Winn of Windsor, Vt. She d. Sept. 28, 1891.
iv. HENRIETTA HANNAII, b. Jan. 13, 1824; m. July 5, 1854, Henry W. Davis, b. Jan. 13, 1826, a soldier of the Civil War, who enlisted in the 60th Regt. N. Y. Vols. He d. Nov. 25, 1864. Two chil- dren. REUBEN DAVIS was a son of Capt. Moses and Sarah (Sawyer) Davis of Revo- lutionary fame, and was b. in Dracut, Mass., Jan. S, 1793. In early life, with his parents, he lived in Hanover; m. first, Aug. 4, 1829, Cynthia Grant Emerson of Norwich, Vt. Came to Cornish from Boston in 1836, and settled on a large river farm, north of Windsor bridge, now known as the Beaman estate. His wife d. Nov. 6, 1841; m. second, in 1842, Julia Morley of Westfield, Mass., who d. in 1870. He was a thrifty farmer; was selectman in 1838; represented the town in the legislatures of 1839- 42, 1843, and was twice elected state senator. He was a delegate to the national convention that nominated James K. Polk for president, and was an intimate friend of President Franklin Pierce. A strictly temper- ate man, a life-long temperance worker and much respected. In 1868 he sold his farm in Cornish, and rem. to Hanover, where he d. March 5, 1869. Children:

Aug. 9, 1825; m. second, Nov. 29, 1825, Mrs. Phoebe (Choate) White, dau. of William and Deborah (Yerrington) Choate, b. in Cornish June 11, 1771, and d. March 3, 1838. He settled and lived near the Moody Hook farm not far from the Croydon line. He d. Nov. 16, 1838. Children, all by first wife and b. in Cornish :

July 9, 1800, and d. in Ashburnham, Mass., April 21, 1893, aged 92. He settled at first in Moretown, Vt., where he remained five years. Was lamed for life in catching a horse, then came back to Cornish where he res. till 1865 and then rem. to Lebanon where he d. June 2, 1875. A shoemaker and farmer. Quiet and unpretending, he lived a life of consistent piety, was an ardent supporter of the Baptist Church, both in Cornish and Lebanon, and by all was esteemed a good man. Children:
i. PHOEBE C., b. Dec. 14, 1829; m. Jan. 1, 1851, J. H. Stevens of Canaan. Res. in Canaan, Enfield and Hill. He d. Feb. 7, 1898. She d. Aug. 30, 1901. Had four children.

DEAN.
The Deans of Cornish have descended from James Dean of Conn., who was a soldier of the Revolution, serving through the whole war. Was with Gen. Washington at Valley Forge during the memorable winter of 1777- 78. Lived to the age of 102 years and died in Vt, Had six children. Among them was Elkanah2, b. in Bethel, Vt .; m. Naomi Goelet of Gran- tham; res. for a time in the family of Ebenezer Burr of Grantham (after- ward Cornish). They had six children, three boys and three girls. One of the boys was George C. Dean3, born in Roxbury, Vt., Ang. 4, 1831; rem. when young to Bethel, where he resided until 1867, when he came to Cornish. While living in Bethel he m. March, 1855, Harriet A. Burr of Cornish, dau. of Ebenezer and Mary (Hall) Burr, b. Aug. 13, 1831. They res. in Cornish till the spring of 1885 when they rem. to Dakota Territory, going with a colony known as the Vermont colony, and engaged in grain growing, etc. The undertaking did not prove suc- cessful owing to several seasons of drought, grasshoppers, hail, etc. Mr. Dean d. there Feb. 19, 1894. The rest of the family, abandoning the idea of remaining there, returned East to Cornish. Children, b. in Bethel, Vt.
i. FRED A., b. April 7, 1853. A traveling salesman with various goods, chiefly nursery stock. Unm. in 1902. Res., No. Charles- town.

DEMING.
1. JOHN1 DEMING was the emigrant ancestor of all bearing the name who have ever res. in Cornish. He came to Conn. about 1640. His descendants, in direct line to their settlement in Cornish, are as follows: John2, Joseph3, Penuels, to Ebenezers, who, in mature life, with several of his children, came to town. His name, so far as known, appears first in town in 1786, but he may have come carlier. He was b. March 8, 1726, the son of Penuel and Ann (Sumner) Deming. He was a school teacher of large experience, having taught forty-six consecutive winters. He also

held town offices. He had m. Jan. 2, 1755, Elizabeth Dana, b. in 1733, and d. Nov. 27, 1802, aged 69, and who is buried in Cornish. He d. Nov. 21, 1811, but there is no monumental record of him in town. Children, all b. in Pomfret, Conn .:

V. ELIZABETH, b. Aug. 13, 1763; m. Jan. 21, 1789, Capt. Caleb Chase of Cornish, son of Moses and Hannah (Brown) Chase. She had nine children. (See Chase.) He d. Sept. 1, 1856, aged 89. She d. Sept. 20, 1840.
vi. EBENEZER, JR., b. Dec. 24, 1765; m. Jan. 29, 1792, Mrs. Eunice (Child) Gates, dau. of Richard and Abigail (Green) Child, b. July 10, 1764, and d. Dec. 6, 1843. They had eight children. He was a soldier of the War of 1812, and d. in Albany, N. Y., at the close of the war.

2. WILLIAM6 DEMING (Ebenezers, Penuels, Joseph3, John2-1) was b. Oct. 15, 1755. He m. Sarah Hall of Cornish, dau. of David and Mary (Barrett) Hall, b. in 1767, and d. Aug. 18, 1851. He d. Sept. 11, 1833. Was a member of the class of 1779 at Dartmouth College; held a commission as Lieut. in the militia, and was a man of acknowledged ability and influence. Children, all b. in Cornish:
i. MARY BARRETT, b. Feb. 10, 1791; m. - - Clark. Lived in Pots- dam, N. Y.
ii. SARAH, b. Sept. 8, 1792; d. Jan. 17, 1793.
iii. SARAH WINCHESTER, b. March 26, 1794; m. March 15, 1849, David Westgate of Plainfield (second wife). She d., childless, March 25, 1879.
iv. DAVID EBENEZER, b. June 14, 1796, and d. Sept. 5, 1879. He was a physician, a graduate from Castleton Med. Ins. in 1820. Prac- ticed in Hinesburg, Vt., till 1833, then went to Kalamazoo, Mich .; was state senator in 1840, in Mich. legislature. He m. Jan. 29, 1829, Electa L., dau. of John M. and Mary A. (Peck) Elbridge, b. July 12, 1808; d. April 2, 1884. They had six children.

ix. ELIZABETH, b. in 1809; m. Dec. 2, 1840, Israel Hall of Cornish (third wife). Had five children. (See Hall.) She d. Jan. 22, 1875. They lived near the bridge leading over Connecticut river to Windsor, Vt., where the creamery now stands.
3. SETH6 DEMING (Ebenezers, Penuels, Josephs, John2-1) was b. June 22, 1759; m. first, Huldah Tucker, b. April 2, 1768, and d. in Sept., 1795; m. second, July 24, 1796, Mary Gustine, b. Oct. 21, 1767, d. June 28, 1843. He served in the War of the Revolution. He d. Sept. 13, 1819. Children by Huldah Tucker, b. in Cornish:

She d. childless, June 29, 1865; in. second, Charlotte Taylor of Cornish, dau. of Joseph and Edena (Williams) Taylor. No issue. They res. in Paris, Me. She d. April 17, 1894, in Detroit, Mich., at the Old Ladies' Home. He d. March 7, 1875.
viii. HULDAH TUCKER, b. April 11, 1812. Never m .; d. July 20, 1880.
ix. EBENEZER SUMNER, b. Nov. 18, 1815; m. in 1846, Maria Curtis, b. May 1, 1828. Had two children who d. in youth. He was a

Daniel and Lydia (Goodwin) Ford, b. in Claremont May 12, 1779, and d. in Cornish Feb. 1 1847. He d. Feb. 26, 1835. He was a deacon and devout mem- ber of the Baptist Church, also an extensive and successful farmer. Children, all b. in Cornish:
