He was the proprietor of the hotel on Cornish Flat, and managed it several years until failing health caused him to dispose of it. He d. July 4, 1866. She survived him until Jan. 12, 1892, aged 64. One child: i. GEORGE BRYANT, b. in 1853, in Cornish; m. - , Fanny Dudley of Windsor, Vt. Lived in Cliftondale and Malden, Mass. Was employed by the Metropolitan Insurance Co. JIRAULD.
DEA. REUBEN JIRAULD (also spelled Gerald and Jirald) was b. in France in 1734 and came to this country "at the time of the Huguenot war," or at the time when they were oppressed and persecuted. He was re- puted to have been very wealthy in France, but his property was confis- cated and he fled to this country bringing nothing with him but his Bible. It appears that he settled at first in Plainfield, Conn., where he m. Jan. 1, 1757, Joanna Spaulding, a dau. of Philip and Elizabeth (Cleve- land) Spaulding, b. Sept. 22, 1733, in Plainfield, Conn., and d. in Cor- nish, Aug. 31, 1807. He with his family early came and settled in Cornish (possibly Plainfield at the first). He d. in Cornish May 8, 1800. Children (so far as known) :
i. MARTHA, b. Aug. 2, 1759; m. in 1782, Dr. Joseph Chapman of Cornish. Ten children. (See Chapman.) She d. March 15, 1855, aged 95-6.

At least four distinct families of Johnsons and their descendants have lived in town, with no known relationship to each other, yet doubtless they all might be traced to a common English ancestor.
1. ABRAHAM JOHNSON was b. in Eng., June 13, 1730. He came in early life to Portsmouth and soon after settled in Greenland. Here he m. about 1760, Mercy Huggins, dau. of John and Hannah (Ayers) Huggins, b. Sept. 15, 1739, and d. April 22, 1815, aged 75. They came to Cornish in 1782, when he was 52 years of age, and settled on the farm, ever since kept in the name, and now owned and occupied by his great-grandson, J. Farris Johnson. He d. Oct. 24, 1803. Children, all b. before com- ing to town, except the last two:

ii. HIRAM, b. Feb. 22, 1837. Soon after he became of age, he went west to Woodburn, Ill., living there several years, but at present (1905) in Decatur, Ill. He represented the town of Woodburn in the state legislature, and has been honored in many ways by his fellow citizens. He enlisted, April, 1861, in the first Ill. Regt. that was mustered into service from that state. Was mustered out in July of the same year. Reƫnlisted, Sept., 1864, and remained in the service till mustered out, Aug., 1865. Was 1st Sergt. In 1863, he m. Tillie Sanner of Illinois. Four children, all b. in Illinois.
5. AURENS JOHNSON (John2, Abraham1) was b. July 21, 1811. A farmer and always lived in town; spent two and one half years (1852-54) in Cal .; m. first, Nov. 9, 1837, Mary Weld of Cornish, dau. of John and Mary (Hilliard) Weld, b. Feb. 8, 1814, and d. NATHANIEL JOHNSON was b. in Greenland June 1, 1768. He was the son of Ebenezer and Hannah (Marston) Johnson. Came to Cornish when young (date unknown); m. in 1795 (or 6), Eleanor Whitten of Cornish, dau. of John and Anne Whitten, b. Oct. 4, 1777, and d. May 31, 1841, aged 63. Mr. Johnson was a farmer and lived in the north part of the town, which place has remained in the family name ever since. He d. Sept. 26, 1855, aged 87. Children, all b. in Cornish.

1. WARDNER JORDAN was b. in Plainfield in 1818. He m. first, about 1845, Luey Whittaker of Grantham, b. in 1823. He with his family came to Cornish, in the employ of the town and had charge of the town farm for two years. After this, he bought the David Richardson farm, which he leased a few years to Levi H. Sanderson while he returned to Plain- field. In 1869, he came back to Cornish remaining two years and then sold his farm to Oliver P. Burr, and returned to Plainfield. His wife d. there March 27, 1872. He m. second, in 1874, a Mrs. Blanchard, who d. in Aug., 1886. He d. Aug. 11, 1889. Children, all by Lucy:

KELLEY.
The Kelleys of Cornish are of English descent. Their line can be traced beyond the Norman conquest to the ancient Britons. The first known immigrant to this country was John Kelley, who came from Newbury, Eng., to Newbury, Mass., in 1633, four generations succeeding him. The name John followed in the ancestral line. William Somer6 Kelley (John 5-4-3-2-1) with Mary (Howe) Kelley, his wife, res. in Salem and had eight children. Their youngest son, Amos7, was b. in Salem Aug. 8, 1800; came to Cornish in 1825; m. Feb. 14, 1826, Abigail Coburn of Cornish, dau. of Simon and Ruth (Eaton) Coburn, b. Aug. 22, 1803, d. Feb. 15, 1878, aged 74. Mr. Kelley d. in Cornish Aug. 3, 1881; a farmer and a quiet, unpretending, conscientious citizen. Children, all b. in Cornish:

KENDRICK.
REV. ARIEL KENDRICK was b. March 31, 1771, in Coventry, Conn. He was the son of Ebenezer and Anne (Davenport) Kendrick, the third of eight children. When five years of age the family rem. to Hanover. He was ever the subject of serious religious impressions and was early inclined to the Christian ministry. Choosing it for his life work he prepared himself for it, beginning to preach in Hanover. He settled in Woodstock, Vt., and afterwards in Salisbury, where he remained four years. After this he came to Cornish in the year 1801. Here he settled and was pastor of the Baptist Church about twenty years. His last years were spent in Cavendish, Vt., where he d. March 25, 1856, aged 85. He m. first, Oct. 25, 1792, Penelope Cotton, b. Dec. 25, 1769, and d. April 14, 1844, aged 74; m. second, about 1850, Mrs. Emma Parker, wid. of Dr. Parker of Cavendish, Vt. She was b. May 20, 1887, and d. June 23, 1876, aged 89. Children, all by Penelope:

Bailey, dau. of Andrew and Rebecea (French) Bailey, b. Dec. 18, 1806, and d. March 23, 1881. He d. in Cornish May 12, 1849. After Mr. Kendrick's death, she m. John Bartlett of Cornish, April 3, 1850. Bryant of Cornish, dau. of Sylvanus and Judith (Chase) Bryant, b. Nov. 30, 1807, and d. 1858. He m. second, Dec. 1, 1858, Mary Jane White, dau. of Moses and Mary Dutton White, b. Nov. 9, 1839. No children by first wife. One dau. by last wife-Eva Jane. He d. May 12, 1887, honored and respected.
4. JAMES? KENDRICK (Ariel:) b. Nov. 6, 1799. He m. Jan. 3, 1836, Hannah Ayers, dau. of Thomas and Lydia (Bartlett) Ayers of Cornish, b. April 19, 1811, d. April 21, 1904. He was a painter and stone dealer and res. in Claremont from the time of his marriage until his death, Oct. 24, 1877. An upright, honorable man and consistent member of the Baptist Church. Children, three daughters, all b. in Claremont:
i. EVELYN, b. Sept. 20, 1838; m. June 13, 1861, Henry F. Baleh. Res., Minneapolis, Minn. Three daughters.
