FRED WILLIAM HURD, son of Henry J. and Henrietta E. (McQuesten) Hurd, b. in Claremont July 31, 1870; m. Nov. 27, 1889, Florence M. Ken- yon of Cornish, dau. of Geo. 1). and Elizabeth Q. (Atwood) Kenyon, b. Nov. 12, 1872. They came to Cornish in 1891 and settled on the Wm. D. Spaulding farm in the north part of the town as a farmer. In 1904,

HURLEY.
EDWARD HURLEY was b. in Ireland, in 1808. He m. there Julia Bridgett Hogan. They came to America about 1836. After living a year or two in Grantham (now Cornish), they settled half a mile south of Cornish Flat, on a small farm, where they spent nearly the remainder of their lives. A couple possessing all the genuine characteristics of the Irish was a novelty to the staid citizens of the neighborhood that was some- what enjoyed. He d. Jan. 20, 1892, aged 84. Bridgett d. Dec. - , 1897. Children:
i. WILLIAM, b. in Ireland, in 1833. A machinist. He never m; d. in Cornish July 17, 1863.
ii. MARTIN V. BUREN, b. Sept. - , 1836, soon after his parents landed. Became a wheelwright and afterwards a barber and settled in Windsor, Vt. The last three or four years of his life he settled on a farm south of, and overlooking Cornish Flat, where he d. Jan. 12, 1892. He had m. July 18, 1876, Clara Almira Walker of Cornish, dau. of Ethan and Mahala (Spaulding) Walker, b. Nov. 7, 1852. Two sons: 1. Martin V. B., Jr., and 2. Arthur. After his death the family rem. to Claremont.

MOSES HUTCHINSON, a son of Rev. Elisha and Martha (Eddy) Hutchinson, was b. in Pomfret, Vt., in April, 1800. He m. first, June 12, 1825; Mehita- ble Whitcomb, dau. of Benj. Whiteomb of Newport. She d. - , in Newport. He m. second, -, Mrs. Huldah (Jackson) Crosby, dau. of Capt. Perez and Lucy (Hunter) Jackson, b. in Cornish May 11, 1807. She d. - , in Chicopee Falls, Mass .; m. third, Sept. 22, 1868, Mrs. Hannah (Spaulding) Carroll of Cornish, dau. of Daniel and Hannah Spaulding, b. Sept. 25, 1799, and d. Oct. 27, 1889. He d. Sept. 11, 1889, a month before his wife d. He was a farmer, a devout member of the Baptist Church and was a bold advocate of his religious convictions. Children, all by first wife:

JACKSON.
BENJAMIN JACKSON, a brother of Lieut. Eleazer Jackson, was b. Nov. 25, 1735, in Mass. Was m. in Attleboro, Mass., Dec. 24, 1756, to Lydia Peck of R. I. They lived in Rehoboth, R. I. It is said they had eight sons and three daus., but records to that effect are lacking. It is also said that he was in the Revolutionary War, enlisting from R. I. He came out of the war unharmed; sold his farm, taking his pay in Continental money, which soon became worthless, and he a poor man. In 1781, his brother Eleazer induced him and family to rem. to Cornish where they, and several of their children spent the rest of their lives. One of their sons d. at sea; one in Ohio and one in Me. JUDGE ELEAZER JACKSON.
3. ELEAZER? JACKSON (Eleazeri) b. May 10, 1783; m. March 22, 1812, Lois Corbin of Newport, dau. of Dr. James and Lois (Kibbie) Corbin, b. Jan. 19, 1794, and d. Aug. 10, 1870. Inheriting the paternal homestead, he remained on it during his life. Although a farmer, he devoted much time to public service. In youth, for eight years he was a drum- mer in the state militia and afterwards promoted to the captaincy of the light infantry, a finely equipped military company. This office he held five years. For nine years he was a teacher in the public schools. He served as one of the selectmen for nineteen years. Was elected six years in succession to the state legislature and three times to the state senate. In 1833 he was appointed associate justice of the court of common pleas

for Sullivan county, which position he held twenty years. From 1820 till 1860, he was frequently appointed road commissioner and served in laying out roads in six counties of the state. He also devoted much time to the settlement of estates, etc. He was a democrat of the Andrew Jackson type, always firm in his convictions, yet never obtrusive with his political opinions, but was affable and genial in all his associations. He d. Oct. 12, 1876, aged 93. Children, all b. in Cornish:

Feb. 12, 1836, aged 50; m. second, -, Ann Adams of Reading, Vt. He was a soldier of the War of 1812, enlisting from Cor- nish. He d. Nov. 1, 1865, aged 80. No children. He res. many years on the Poole farm on the mountain above the "Hempyard." Was a man of good natural endowments but ruined by habitual intoxication.
5. ABEL2 JACKSON (Eleazer1) b. June 17, 1788; m. March 24 (17, town record), 1813, Betsey Morse of Cornish. No children. She d. Feb. 19, 1841, aged 51. She was dau. of Luther and Eunice Smith Morse, b. June 21, 1797; m. second, Nov. 4, 1841, Hannah B. Chase, dau. of Dea. John and Louisa (Joslyn) Chase of Cornish, b. April 22, 1803, d. Aug. 28, 1894. Like his brother Eleazer, he was promoted in military affairs to the captaincy of a military company. He was a millwright, worked at his trade several years in Wallingford, Vt., and erected several mills there. Returned to Cornish Flat in 1832 and bought the lower mill privilege, rebuilt the mill and erected a fine residence there. Still continuing at his 16-II

trade he built and helped build about twenty different mills in town. In 1852, he retired from his trade and bought the Newton Whittlesey place on the Flat where he spent the rest of his life. He d. July 12, 1859. Child by Hannah B. Chase:
i. CHARLES ABEL, b. Dec. 25, 1842. A carpenter by trade. In 1861, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy at Charlestown, Mass., and served in the navy about two years, when he was discharged on account of disability. In the spring of 1867, he went to Moweaqua, Ill., where (except five years spent in Cornish) he has since resided, working at his trade. He m. July 2, 1872, Mary Jane Glenn of Carlinville, Ill. S, 1855, Judith Chase Bryant, dau. of Sylvanus and Sophia (Woodward) Bryant of Cornish, b. Dee. 10, 1829. Of a pleasant and genial disposi- tion, he won many friends. A Demoerat and his party in the minority, yet he has repeatedly been elected on the board of selectmen. He also represented the town in the legislature of 1877. In military times he was Capt. of a Co. of militia and afterwards of a company of home guards in the time of the Civil War. Was a member of Cheshire Lodge, F. A. A. M. He d. Feb. 10, 1904. Children, both b. in Cornish:

Leaving his business there he came and settled on the Flat in 1890 (?). Was seleetman in 1895-96-97 and represented the town in the legislature of 1898-99.
CHARLES EDWIN JACKSON.
REV. JAMES T. JACKSON, son of John and Priscilla (Taylor) Jackson was b. in Danbury, March 24, 1834. Fitted for college at Andover Academy, N. H., and MeIndoes Academy, Vt. Graduate of Dartmouth College in class of 1859. A successful teacher many years. He m. Sept. 14, 1865, Martha Melissa Smith, dau. of Enos and Martha (Sulloway) Smith, b. May 28, 1840. Having been "approbated to preach" by the Concord, N. H., Congregational Association, he came to Cornish in April, 1874, where he remained twenty-two years in the ministry, a much beloved pastor and townsman. (See Congregational Church History; also "Old Folks Visit.") After his dismission from the Congre-

JAPHET JACKSON, a brother of Eleazer, Benjamin and Michael, was b. about 1755. Evidently he lived in town a few years, as he m. June 5, 1800, in Cornish, Hannah Currier, dau. of Moses and Mary (Hall) Currier, who was b. April 15, 1780. No record of any children b. in town or further record of this family.
MICHAEL JACKSON, also a brother of Lieut. Eleazer Jackson was b. June 7. 1750. He came from Watertown, Mass., and lived some years in Cor- nish near his brother; m. first, Deborah Jenks; after her death in 1794, he m. Aug. 7, 1796, Polly Shapley of Cornish. It is not known when or where he rem. or when he d. There is no gravestone record of him or of his family in town excepting one son. Children, all by first wife, and a part at least b. in town:

JENNEY.
This family is of English and Scotch descent. Of this family was Isaac Jenney who was b. in Dartmouth, Mass.,' May 5, 1743. He m. Sept. 27, 1770, Margaret Thompson of Stoughton, Mass. He was a pioneer settler in that part of Grantham afterwards annexed to Plainfield. Here they brought up a family of eight children, all b. in Grantham. We have been unable to find the full record of all of these, but from various sources, we obtain the following partial record :
i. EBENEZER, b. Aug., 1773; m. and lived in Leicester, Vt., and had a family of eight sons, and d. there.
2. ii. ASA, b. Aug. 17, 1776.
iii. EPHRAIM, b. in 1781. Lived first in Chester, Vt., where he m. Lois Heald of that town. They lived here and raised a large family. A short time before his death he rem. to Davenport, Iowa, where he d. Jan. 16, 1844, in the home of his son Stephen P., who d. April 4, 1848, leaving a dau. Lois.
iv. DAVID THOMPSON, b. in 1782; m. March 9, 1817, Sally Rice of Cor- nish, dau. of Dimond and Lydia (Bradley) Rice, b. March 26, 1797, and d. in Roxbury, Vt., April 30, 1865. He d. in Middle- sex, Vt., April 4, 1868. They had eight children. The first two were b. in Cornish: 1. Sarah Amelia, b. Dec. 19, 1817. 2. Samantha Maria, b. April 26, 1819. The rest of the children were b. in Roxbury, Vt. One of their sons, Lucius M., who res. in Tacoma, Wash., has rendered this account of his father's family.

2. ASA? JENNEY, the second son of Isaac and Margaret (Thompson) Jenney, was b. Aug. 17, 1776. He m. Jan., 1803, Cynthia Olds and raised a large family. He remained on the homestead all his life dying June 30, 1847. His wife d. April 3, 1846. Children, all b. in Grantham:
