Church who was distinguished in King Philip's War. They lived in Tiverton and afterwards a few years in Killingsly, Conn., and then came to Plainfield, in the winter of 1777-78. They came with an ox-sled, bringing all their goods and nine children with them. Spent the remain- der of their lives in Plainfield. She d. April 27, 1831. He d. Sept. 5, 1821. Children:

5. JOSEPH' WESTGATE (Johns, George?, Robert1) was b. Dec. 6, 1774, in Tiverton, R. I. He came from Killingsly, Conn., to Plainfield with his parents in the winter of 1777-78. He was the youngest of the nine children who came on the ox-team, being then about three years of age. In 1803 he settled in Cornish on the hill road, north of the Capt. Constant Smith farm. Here he spent the rest of his life farming. He m. - , Abigail Luey, dau. of ---- , b. March 10, 1779, and d. Feb. 15, 1863, aged 84. He d. June 21, 1855. Children, all supposed to have been b. in Cornish:


i. HARVEY, b. Aug. 9, 1801; m. Sept. 14, 1836, Sally Tucker who d. March 12, 1878. They lived in Newbury, Vt. He d. Aug. 25, 1876. One son: Thomas H., b. July 8, 1837.

June 19, 1811, d. May 29, 1890. He was a farmer and butcher. Built the granite stone house on the Meriden road in 1850-54. He d. May 12, 1890. Children:

12. WILLIAM E.6 WESTGATE (Earls-4, John3, George?, Robert1) was b. in Plain- field Dec. 9, 1840; m. Nov. 12, 1861, Charlotte E. Bryant of Cornish, dau. of Daniel and Chloe (Hildreth) Bryant, b. March 27, 1841. In the spring of 1862, they came to Cornish on the deep, hard snow crust and settled on the William R. Kimball farm, where they have since res. Mr. Westgate is a farmer and a successful breeder of throughbred Hol- stein cattle, and has been quite prominent in the affairs of the town and county. Was selectman three years; collector of taxes; represented the town in the legislature of 1895, and has been county commissioner six years. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. EARLE, b. May 25, 1865; m. Nov. 2, 1892, Angie L. Chadbourne of Cornish, dau. of William E. and Rosella (Stone) Chadbourne, b. Oct. 19, 1862. Rem. to Windsor in 1894, and was butter-maker at Hillside Creamery several years and later in Claremont Creamery and afterwards returned to the home of his wife's parents in Cornish. No children.


ii. MARTHA ELIZABETH, b. March 8, 1869; m. Dec. 14, 1892, Elwin W. Quimby of Cornish. Two children. (See Quimby.)


13. EDWARD J.7 WESTGATE (I. Williams®, Davids, Joseph Earles, Earls, George?, Robert1) was b. May 15, 1850; m. Aug. 28, 1878, Alice Mary Bean, dau. of Henry E. and Livona (Leavitt) Bean of Plainfield, b. Oct. 30, 1855 in Meriden. Mr. Westgate lived on the homestead in same business as his father. He d. April 6, 1908. Children:

WHITE.


1. THOMAS WHITE, supposed to be the first of the name in Cornish, came from Dublin, N. H., about 1808, about the same time the Williams family came. These two families had intermarried several times before coming to Cornish, so they naturally migrated together. He was b. May 19, 1746; m. Oct. 31, 1772, Mary French of Dublin, who was b. July 24, 1750, and d. in Cornish, Jan. 10, 1826. He m. again Sept. 3, 1827, Wid. Lucy Porter. She was 73, and he 81 years of age at m. She d. Sept. 19, 1830, and he d. Aug. 20, 1831. The inscription on his tombstone says that they (referring to his first wife) "lived together 53 years and had six sons and six daughters." Children:

ii. MARY, twin, b. 1775; m. first, Aug. 23, 1796, Samuel Lewis. He d. July 20, 1823, aged 51. M. second, -, William Freto. She d. July 11, 1827.

9. STILMAN B.3 WHITE (Aaron?, Thomas1) was b. March 18, 1820; m. March 20, 1840, Nancy M. Farrington of Cornish, dau. of Benjamin and Theda (Bartlett) Farrington, b. Feb. 28, 1823, and d. June 2, 1897. About 1852, they left Cornish for Thetford, Vt., where they remained till 1862, when they settled in Norwich, Vt., where they spent the rest of their lives. He d. Nov. 18, 1898. Children:


i. SAMUEL L., b. Feb. 11, 1841, in Cornish; m. July 19, 1863, Maria M. Emery. Ten children. A soldier of the Civil War, and at one time an inmate of Libby Prison. Settled in New Ipswich, where his children were all b. Living (1903) in Gardner, Mass. ii. ACHSA M., b. Jan. 18, 1842, in Cornish; m. first, Ozro Austin. One child: Frances; m. second, March 18, 1868, Jedediah Hunt- ington. Two children. (See Huntington.) He d. Dec. 15, 1875, by accident. (See Casualties.) After this she lived in Norwich till she m. third, Aug. 18, 1896, H. K. Worthly, and in 1903, lives in Bradford, Vt.


iii. LOUISA L., b. Dec. 12, 1844, in Cornish; m. Sept., 1862, Andrew Robinson of No. Thetford, She d. Dec. 14, 1862.

WHITING.


NATHAN and PHEBE WHITING with their family were residents of the town several years near the close of the 18th century. As they left no tomb- stone record, it is probable they left town soon after unless they were -

buried in graves that were never marked by any tablets. In 1790, the family consisted of six members: three males and three females. The town record, in part at least, thus makes mention of their children:

WHITTAKER.


JOHN WHITTAKER was the son of Elias and Betsey (Clark) Whittaker, b. in Grantham, Sept. 17, 1826; m. Dec. 31, 1847, Delia Hanks, b. in Norwich, Vt., April 3, 1828, and d. Nov. 3, 1890. About the year 1857, he rem. to New- ton, Wis., where they remained about six years and then returned east. While in Wis. he enlisted in the Civil War in a Wis. Regt. Was honorably discharged by reason of sickness. Came to Cornish May 28, 1878, and purchased the Gil- man Chase (afterwards Leslie, also Lull) farm. Here they lived until March 23, 1882, when they rem. to Weathersfield, Vt., where he d. Jan. 19, 1893. No children.


JONATHAN CLARK WHITTAKER, a brother of John, was b. in Grantham Aug. 26, 1834; m. April 10, 1856, Luthera M. Hanks of Norwich, Vt., a sis- ter of his brother's wife, b. Dec. 30, 1833. They accompanied his brother John to Newton, Wis., where they remained about six years, then came east, living in Cornish and Grantham. In 1870 he came to Cor- nish and purchased the Moses Chase farm and mill. Here they lived till he d. June 28, 1893. Children:


i. MARY LILLIAN, b. March 9, 1857, in Wis .; m. Nov. 17, 1883, Willie W. Hanks, her cousin. They res. in Weathersfield, Vt., a few years, then rem. to Cal. Three children.


ii. ADALINE GLADYS, b. in Cornish, Dec. 9, 1864; m. Oct. 30, 1883, Arthur A. Penniman of Cornish. They res. a few years in Weathersfield, Vt., then joined the rest of the family and rem. to Cal. Mrs. Whittaker also emigrated with her daughters to the same place. Adaline G. had two children. (See Pen- niman.)


WHITTEN.


JOHN WHITTEN, with Anna his wife, came from Portsmouth and settled in town about 1772. It is said their family at last were thirteen children, but only the names of six are found on the records of the town; the rest are veiled in uncertainty. It is also said to be a fact that his wife had four children at one birth. They were named: Wonderful, Strange, Marvelous and True. They lived but a short time. The spot where they were buried is marked by a stone and has been witnessed by many. In the census of 1790 the family consisted of Mr. Whitten and one large boy and two small boys, also his wife and eight girls. Mr. Whitten was a very strong man, counted almost a giant in those days.
