HEYWOOD.


COL. WILLIAM HEYWOOD of Revolutionary fame had twelve children. His second child, Eleazer, b. May 8, 1755; m. Dorcas Whittaker about 1790, and had eight children. The third (Mary), b. -; m. James W. Bradley of Cornish and d. in Claremont in 1873. The fourth child was Willard Heywood, b. Jan. 12, 1796, in Plainfield, and lived in Cornish many years. His last years were spent in Windsor, Vt., where he d. about 1875 (?). He m. June 2, 1832, Emily Baldwin, dau. of Dr. Eleazer and Polly (Ladd) Baldwin of Strafford, Vt., b. April 16, 1812; d. Nov. 18, 1877. He was a teamster. Was selectman in Cornish 1855-56. Children:

HILDRETH.


The Hildreths of Cornish trace their ancestry back to Richard Hildreth, who came to this country in 1643 and settled in Cambridge, afterwards living in Woburn and then in Chelmsford, where he d. in 1693. Stephen Hildreth, a descendant of Richard, m. Esther Manning and settled in New Ipswich, N. H., where he d. in 1800. Here their son:


1. SAMUEL HILDRETH was b. in 1764. He m. - , Zilpha Gilbert, dau. of John and Sarah (Rich) Gilbert, b. in 1771 and d. June 25, 1851, in Cornish. HILLIARD.


1. SAMUEL HILLIARD, b. in Conn. Nov. 16, 1747, came to Cornish from Ston- ington. Here he lived many years. Hem. Phoebe Yerrington, b. in 1747. On her tombstone (now broken) is inscribed "In memory of Phoebe, wife of the Rev. Samuel Hilliard, who d. July 18, 1798, aged 52."


"Be still my friends, dry up your tears, I must lie here, 'till Christ appears."


It is said that he was a soldier of the Revolution, and participated in the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington. After his settlement in Cornish he helped organize the Cornish Baptist Church in 1789, and was one of its first deacons. On July 3, 1792, the church expressed their approbation that "Deacon Hilliard improve his gift in public." He soon after became popular as a Baptist preacher, but after some years his religious views changed and he became a Universalist, and as such was settled as pastor in Shrewsbury and Wallingford, Vt., and finally at Clarendon, Vt., where he d. Nov. 16, 1831. His remains were brought to Cornish and buried beside those of his wife, Phoebe, in a lot, now an open pasture belonging to Freeman A. Johnson. After leaving Cornish in 1800, he m. second, Caroline Lathrop, by whom he had six children, all b. in Vt. She was b. June 1, 1770, and d. Feb. 21, 1845. Children by Phoebe, supposed to have been b. in Cornish:

He was an excellent carpenter and erected many buildings in Cornish and elsewhere. Of a very social nature and said to have been very fond of telling stories. Children :

Was prominent in the affairs of the town, a lead- ing Democrat, a ready debater, public spirited and deeply interested in everything that tended to promote the welfare of the town. He was a gunsmith by trade and carried his art to a high state of excellence, and had a wide reputation of manufacturing rifles and other firearms, of as good quality as any manufacturer of his time. He d. June 10, 1877. After Mr. Hilliard's death his wid. m. Caleb H. Pool, a blacksmith, who d. June 3, 1SSS. She d. in Cornish April 17, 1908. Children:

A. A. Masons and also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter of Windsor, Vt. He d. March 31, 1904. Child:

RICHMOND HILLIARD lived in town several years; m. first, March 16, 1790, Polly Wilson, who d. without issue about 1792 (?); m. second, April 13, 1795, Lydia Goodwin Ford then of Claremont, eldest dau. of Capt. Daniel and Lydia (Goodwin) Ford, b. Aug. 31, 1774; d. -. Mr. Hilliard's connection with the other Hilliard families in town is uncer- tain, but is supposed to have been a brother of Dea. Samuel. It is not known when or where he d. Children, all by second wife:

15. LUTHER HILLIARD was b. May 5, 1759 (?) ; m. - , Abigail T. - , who was b. Dec., 1790 (?), and d. Dec. 27, 1859. Hed. Dec. 2, 1850, and both buried in Cornish. He may have been a brother of one or both of his contemporaries, Samuel or Richmond. According to the census of 1790, his family in town, consisted of two males and three females but the records of the family have not been found, except the above cemetery records.


HOLBROOK.


ALONZO HOLBROOK, b. at Lemington, Vt., Nov. 23, 1808; m. May 12, 1836, Sarah C. Bradley of Cornish, dau. of Isaiah and Mary (Dustin) Bradley, b. Feb. 16, 1807, in Haverhill, Mass .; d. in Claremont March 12, 1877. They settled in Cornish soon after their marriage, where he d. April 21, 1852. The family remained in Cornish a few years longer. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. ISAIAH THOMAS, b. Aug. 6, 1837. His father dying when he was but 14, left him in charge of the farm which he cared for till his majority. He enlisted in the 7th Regt. N. H. Vols. (See Military.) After the war he engaged in trade for a time at the Flat, when he suddenly left town, going west to Mo., where it is said he d. at Marcellus, Mo., in 1897. Was twice m.


ii. ELLEN MARIA, b. Feb. 18, 1840; d. March 19, 1859.


iii. ELIZABETH SARAH, b. April 22, 1842; m. Dec. 26, 1865, George H. Stowell, Second, of Claremont, where they both spent their lives. They had five children, all b. in Claremont. He d. Nov. 21, 1888. She d. Oct. 5, 1899.


iv. SUSAN AMELIA, b. Oct. 1, 1850; m. Sept. 18, 1877, at Newport, Wil- liam H. Ellsworth. Four children. Res. a short time in Clare- mont and then rem. to Cal., where she d. at La Verne Dec. 30, 1890.

1. DYER HOOK came to Cornish from Candia in 1805. He was b. Oct. - , 1778; m. - , Mary Griffin of Sandown, dau. of Isaae Griffin, b. - , 1785. Mr. Hook d. July 3, 1815. His wid. afterward m. July 16, 1817, Walter H. Foss and had children. (See Foss.) She d. June 13, 1865. Children by Dyer Hook:

iii. EMMA ELIZA, b. Dee. 29, 1852; m. June 7, 1876, Fred W. Read of Cornish. Six children. (Sec Read.)

3. MOODY? HOOK (Dyer1) was b. June 24, 1813. Was a farmer. Like his brother Peter, he was possessed of a sweet and happy spirit, ever loyal to an enlightened conscience, holding the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He m. Sept. 7, 1842, Eliza Carroll of Croydon, dau. of John Prince and Rachel (Powers) Carroll, b. Jan. 12, 1823, and d. Nov. 30, 1884. He d. Aug. 17, 1886. Children, all b. in Cornish :


i. RACHEL ANN, b. Aug. 30, 1843. She was a successful teacher of schools several years; m. Jan. 1, 1868, Ira F. Rowell of Sutton, N. H. He was a prominent man in Sutton and afterwards repre- sented Claremont in the N. H. Leg. of 1899. They rem. to Clare- mont in Nov., 1882, where they have since lived. One child, Harry Franklin, who graduated from Stevens High School in 1893; m. Oet. 5, 1899, Flora A. Magown of Claremont. Has been a trusted employee of the Sullivan Machine Co. for sixteen years (1910).

. ii. MARY FRANCES, b. April 29, 1845. She also was a successful teacher of schools; m. Feb. 15, 1866, Frances Edward Freeman of Cor- nish. Two children. (See Freeman.) Lived a few years in Cornish and then rem. to Claremont, where she d. Aug. 3, 1903. ALICE JANE, b. Nov. 21, 1848; m. July 4, 1875, Rev. Howard R. Mitchell of Waterville, Me. He has had several pastorates, but they are now (1910) living in Waterville, Me. Two children: 1. Frank Howard, b. in Oskaloosa, Ia., Aug. 13, 1876. 2. Grace Alice, b. in Hinsdale, May 18, 1880; m. June 7, 1911, Edward Payson Davis of Waterville, Me.


iv. LUETTE ELIZA, b. June 26, 1851; m. June 12, 1873, Seth Raynsford Cole of Cornish. One son, Clarence. (See Cole.) She d. in Cornish Jan. 3, 187S.
