KENYON.


The Kenyon family came from Rhode Island, The first name we find is that of Joseph Kenyon, b. Feb. 5, 1737; m. - , Catharine Enos, b. Sept. 12, 1742, and d. Sept. 5, 1826. This family came to Plainfield (date unknown) and settled on a farm north of Cornish line, opposite the farm of Dr. Joseph Chapman in Cornish. He d. April 15, 1829. Children :

2. JOSEPH2-1 KENYON was b. March 15, 1761; m. - , Hepsediah Parker. Remained on the homestead and good authority says they had sixteen children, but several of their names, together with the dates of birth, marriage and death of many of the family cannot be found, therefore the order of the eleven children as given may not be correct. He d. April 11, 1842. Children, as far as ascertained:


i. MARY, b. -; m. first, Jan. 10, 1805, Jesse Lombard in Windsor, Vt .; m. second, Cleveland.


ii. JOSEPII, JR., b. -; m. Sarah Palmer. Six children. He was drum major in the militia and was ever after given the title of "Major." He was a worthy man and member of the Congre- gational Church in Plainfield.

5. ISAAC C.3 KENYON (Joseph2-1) was b. - , 1816; m. May 20, 1846, Eliza Emeline Bartlett of Cornish, dau. of Nathaniel and Sarah (John- son) Bartlett, b. Jan. 8, 1826. Mr. Kenyon d. Aug. 15, 1857. His wid. afterwards, in 1860, m. Alpheus Baldwin, a son of Dr. Eleazer Baldwin of Strafford, Vt. She d. Oct. 10, 1895. She left one son by first husband: Clarence N. Kenyon, a successful merchant in Barre, Vt., b. Jan. 10, 1856, and m. Dec. 27, 1876, Hattie M. Jenness. Have had two children.


The sons of Joseph Kenyon were celebrated for their musical talents, especially that of martial music. Isaac C. was a drummer; Stephen was a fifer; Joseph was a drum major; Elijah P. was a clarionet player and George D. was a bugle and cornet player; his son, Edwin G., and grandson, Martin E., are both skilful players on the cornet.

6. GEORGE DANA3 KENYON (Joseph2-1) was b. March, 1817; m. first, May 20, 1846, Sarah Maria Bartlett, a sister of the wife of his brother, Isaac C., b. Aug. 27, 1821, and d. Oct. 8, 1865; m. second, June 27, 1866, Lizzie Quinton Atwood of Weathersfield, Vt., dau. of Dr. Robert and Elvira M. (Nutting) Atwood, b. - , 1835 (?), and d. Aug. 8, 1885. Mr. Kenyon was a first-class musician, leader and instructor of the Windsor brass band many years, was choir leader, etc.


It will be observed that Mr. Kenyon and his brother Isaac married sisters on the same day, and together settled in the same house on

"Kenyon Hill" in 1846. The brother Isaac d. in 1857. Mr. Kenyon continued on the place till after the death of his second wife, when his health failing, he sold his farm in 1887 and retired. He d. Sept. 19, 1889, aged 72. Children, all b. in town:

JAMES G. KIDDER was b. Jan. 29, 1810, in Weathersfield, Vt. He was the son of Moses and Naney Ann (Goodwin) Kidder. Came to Cornish about 1849. Had m. Sept. 16, 1841, Sarah F. Burr, dau. of Ebenezer and Mary (Hall) Burr, b. May 15, 1816, d. March 3, 1898. They lived many years at the Flat, where they both died. He d. suddenly Nov. 25, 1872. Children:


i. MARY J., b. April 30, 1842, in Claremont; m. in Oet., 1865, William B. Switzer of Woodstock, Vt., where they lived. Had five: children. She d. Oct. 9, 1873.


ii. NANCY A., b. June 15, 1843, in Cornish; m. first, Sept. 29, 1862, Reuben Benway, a soldier of the Civil War, in the 14th N. H. Vols. He died in the service Nov. 12, 1863; m. second, March 29, 1868, Henry H. Sanderson, also a soldier in the Civil War, from Mass. Three children, all by last husband, lived at Cornish Flat. (See Sanderson.) She d. March 9, 1906.


iii. JAMES BIRNEY, b. July 2, 1845. He enlisted March 31, 1864, in the U. S. Cav., and d. in the service July 7, 1864.

KIMBALL.


The first Kimballs, or Kemballs, came to America in 1634. Richard Kimball came in the ship Elizabeth and soon after landing, settled in Water- town, and afterward in Ipswich, Mass. He m. first, Martha Scott. After- ward he m. Margarett Dow. The generations following and prior to Cornish history are as follows:


Benjamin?, b. 1637; m. Mary Haseltine. Res., Bradford, Mass. Richards, b. Dec. 30, 1665; m. Mehitable Day. Res., Haverhill, Mass. Jobs, b. Sept. 16, 1702; m. Mary Green. Res. in Bradford and Methuen, Mass., and Plainfield, Conn. These were the parents of


1. ELIPHALET5 KIMBALL, b. Feb. 10, 1730, in Bradford, Mass; m. May 10, 1759, Elizabeth Woodard, res. in Plainfield, Conn., till soon after the settlement of Cornish, where he came with his family and settled in town and remained through life, dying May 5, 1805. His wife soon followed him, dying Nov. 4, 1805. When he settled he supposed his farm was within the limits of the town of Plainfield, but afterward when the lines were established, it was found that it ran about 20 rods north of his house, thus placing his home outside of Plainfield, and in the town of Cornish. This was a great grief to him. Children:

He was Dea. of the Congregational Church many years. Several transactions in land by him are recorded. At one time he paid $5.00 to Oliver Torrey, a neighbor, for a water privilege. 4. WILLIAM RIPLEY7 KIMBALL (Eliphalet6-5, Jobs, Richards, Benjamin?, Rich- ardı) b. March 23, 1792; m. Sept. 1, 1818, Eliza D. Dorr of Cornish, dau. of Benj. and Elizabeth (Cotton) Dorr, b. Feb. 18, 1798, and d. July 16, 1854. He d. June 7, 1856. He was a farmer, a man of good adminis- trative ability and of fine personal appearance. He inherited not a little of the force and energy of character of his grandfather, William Ripley, for whom he was named.


His wife was a woman of sweet spirit, of great loveliness of character, combined with a deep religious experience, all of which endeared her to a large circle of friends. She was an active member of the Con- gregational Church. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. ELIZA JANE, b. Aug. 2, 1819; m. June 22, 1840, Farris Comings of Cornish. They had five children. They res. many years in Norwich, Vt., and West Lebanon. He d. July 25, 1874, since which time she res. in Shelburne Falls, Mass., till her death, Sept. 2, 1905.


ii. CAROLINE CELINDA, b. Dec. 6, 1821; m. Nov. 23, 1847, Dr. Abner Spicer Warner. She d. Sept. 12, 1866. Res., Weathersfield, Conn. Five children.


iii. WILLIAM RIPLEY, JR., b. July 22, 1823; m. - , Lizzie Whittle of Westminster, Vt. Two children. 1. John, who d. young. 2. George, who d. unm. Res. in Lexington, Ky.


iv. EDWARD DORR, b. April 16, 1825; m. Sept. 12, 1860, Jeannette Ripley Treat, dau. of James Treat, b. Aug. 10, 1835, d. July 15, 1888. He was educated at K. U. Academy. For some years he was one of the firm of J. P. Squires & Co. of Boston. In 1886, he returned to Cornish for a short time. Losing his only child, by a sad fatality (see Casualties), he returned to Chelsea, Mass., where he engaged in the provision business in Faneuil Hall Market, Boston, until 1889, when he retired. Since 1890, he has

res. in Watertown, Mass. He, however, owns a large stock farm in Newport, which is under the management of his brother, Henry M. He is generous, sympathetic and thoughtful of the wants of the needy. Worthy young persons and public institu- tions have been aided by him. The chapel at Mt. Auburn, Mass., was built largely with his money. He remembered his native town by a fund of $3,000 for the worthy poor. In all the laudable enterprises his excellent wife, while living, joined him in hearty self-sacrificing approval, and since her death he has continued in many similar acts of benevolence. They had but one child, Mary Treat, b. March, 1864, in Chelsea, Mass., and d. in Cornish Oct. 22, 1866.

He left Cornish in 1868 and went to Newport where he has since res. For a few years he was engaged as provision dealer in Newport, but in 1890, he with his brother established the "Riverside Stock Farm" and engaged in the raising and sale of horses. This is one of the most prominent stock farms in the state. He was educated at K. U. Academy. Three children.

5. EDWARD6 KIMBALL (Jonathans, Samuels, David?, Benjamin .? , Richard1) b. Feb. 3, 1763, in Bradford, Mass. By the genealogical record it will be seen that he was rem. four generations from the other Kimballs of Cornish, so the relationship between them was very slight. He. m. March 18, 1785, Sarah Emerson. He was a soldier in Col. Went-

worth's Regt. in Sept., 1779, and was then of Pelham. He res. in Cornish and made purchases of land there and in Croydon. He d. in 1814, but it is not known where he d. or is buried. Children, b. in Cornish:

WILLIAM M. KINSMAN, b. Nov. 17, 1817, in Williamstown, Vt., was the son of Ephraim and Rebecca (Dow) Kinsman; m. - , Mrs. Maria (Mun- ger) Dean, dau. of William and Ruth (Bond) Munger, b. Feb. 26; 1820, and d. Jan. 13, 1892. Mr. Kinsman came from Plainfield to Cornish, -- , and settled on the "Richard Coburn" farm, where he remained until his death April 1, 1878. One child, b. in Plainfield.


2. DARWIN B. KINSMAN, b. Feb. 21, 1847; m. Jan. 17, 1871, Adaline Estelle Chase of Cornish, dau. of Moses and Fidelia (Alden) Chase, b. April 25, 1844. They res. on the "Francis Cobb" farm. He is a farmer and also a general mechanic. Children, all b. in Cornish:
