Worked in his father's mill from the age of fourteen till he was twenty-four, when he built a brick cottage house on a farm a mile east from his birthplace, where he spent most of his life. Beside farming, he worked at the car- penter's trade. Built the Catholic Church at West Claremont and the Methodist Episcopal Church in Cornish and other buildings. 7. EBEN? COMINGS (Samuel6-5, John-3-2, Isaaci) b. June 24, 1779; m. Nov. 2, 1806, Ursula Child, dau. of Stephen and Mercy (Chase) Child, b. June 2, 1785, and d. June 29, 1831. He lived at the Mills till a short time pre- vious to his marriage, when he purchased a farm a mile east, by the side of his brother Andrew, where he, being a carpenter as well as farmer, erected the necessary farm buildings since occupied by Larnard Powers. Here he lived until about 1830. He then sold his farm, and rem. to

Hanover, where he spent the remainder of his life. He d. Oct. 30, 1850. His remains were brought to Cornish and buried in the Comings ceme- tery. He was a Capt. of light infantry in the War of 1812. After the children were equipped for their life work, they emigrated chiefly to Mo. and Kans., where some engaged in educational work, and some in manufacturing, and were all successful until the disturbances due to the Civil War interrupted their prosperity to some extent. Graduated Kimball Union Academy, class of 1838; Dartmouth College, class 1842; teacher, Randolph, Vt., 1842-45; prof. of language and mathematics in Jubilee College, Ill., ten years, studied theology, ord. by the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1848; was rector in Albion, Ill., and Monroe, Mo., and Girard, Kan .; prof. of mathematics in St. Paul's Col- lege. He founded a ladies' seminary at Monroe, Mo., and had charge of it seventeen years. M. June 23, 1861, Abigail Cornelia Walker, b. in 1837 and d. in June 16, 1901. They had four chil- dren. He d. Sept. 6, 1905, in San Diego, Cal., at the home of his dau., Mrs. M. M. Brown, aged 85.


vii. SAMUEL EDWARD, b. Oct. 13, 1823; m. April 26, 1852, Martha Corey. She d. in 1892. Had three children. He graduated at Dart- mouth College in 1845. Spent some years teaching, and had charge of the Episcopal school at Monroe, Mo. After 1878 he res. in Ottawa, Kans., where he engaged in the settlement of estates and other business connected with the legal profession. He d. April 2, 1894, in Ottawa. Left two daus.


8. BENJAMIN? COMINGS (Benjamins, Samuels, John4-3-2, Isaac!) b. April 15, 1789; m. Nov. 30, 1815, Althea Wellman of Cornish, dau. of James and Althea (Ripley) Wellman, b. Nov. 14, 1790, and d. in New Britain, Conn., Jan. 10, 1878, aged 87, at the home of her eldest son. Capt. Benjamin d. in Cornish Nov. 22, 1863, aged 74. He was a publie-spirited, upright, liberal-hearted man, ever a friend to the friendless and those in trouble. Active in the temperance cause and a strong anti-slavery man in its early days, and so remained as long as he lived. He was possessed of a strong personality and commanding presence that won respect among his fellowmen. He belonged to the Congregational Church and for many years was one of its Deas, and Supt. of the Sunday school. Children, all b. in Cornish :

URIEL L. COMINGS.


1859. He was a master meehanie chiefly as a millwright and bridge builder. Several bridges across the Connecticut river, also several mills and factories were erected or equipped with his aid. He was associated with his brother-in-law, Bela J. Fletcher, and William Brown of Clare- mont in the building of the old toll bridge at Windsor, Vt. He held a commission of major in the State Militia. Children by Abigail Bryant:

He was an industrious and thrifty farmer, an honorable Christian gentleman, choosing the quiet but absorbing duties of his large farm. He has never sought politieal honor or office, yet has ever taken a deep interest in every worthy cause. Has con- tinued to res. on the farm owned and occupied by his father and grand- father. He m. Child: FENNO BENJ. b. in Cornish Jan. 16, 1860; m. Feb. 7, 1881, Isoline Arelpha Robinson. They res. for a time in So. Lancaster, and Clinton, Mass., but owing to age and declining health of his par- ents, he has returned to eare for them in the home of his nativity. He has served the town on the board of selectmen, and also repre-

sented the town in the legislature of 1910-11. They have one child, a dau., Lizzie Franees, b. in Cornish Jan. 22, 1882. She was m. Sept. 12, 1906, to Herbert E. Wood of Cornish, a profes- sor of music.


PELHAM BRANCH.


1. DAVID6 COMINGS (Davids, Ephraim4, Thomas3, John?, Isaaci) b. in 1769, in Nottingham West, now Hudson, was the son of Capt. David and Eliza- beth (Butterfield) Comings. Elizabeth Butterfield and Sarah Butter- field who in. Capt. Samuel6 Comings, were sisters. In this way, at least, the two branches of Comings in Cornish are related. Also Thomas3 in one branch is brother to John3 in the other. This connection between the two branches of the family in Cornish was ascertained through the diligent researches of Mr. A. O. Cummins of Montpelier, Vt., who has rendered very efficient aid in compiling the Comings record. Mr. Comings m. Dee. 24, 1793, Phoebe Hall (or Wyman) of Nottingham West, b. in 1769. They removed to Pelham in 1804 and to Cornish in 1806. They settled on Cornish Flat on a farm just north of the present site of the Baptist church and spent the rest of their lives there. She d. Feb. 12, 1846. He d. April 27, 1819.


"Within this saered bed of rest, a tender father lies,


But he shall live among the just, when Christ shall bid him rise." (Epitaph on his tombstone.)


It is noteworthy that the father, with a loved daughter, were the first two whose remains were carried into the new Baptist church on Cornish Flat, after its ereetion in the spring of 1819, and that 27 years later, in 1846, the mother with a devoted son were the first two whose remains were borne into the same house after a complete remodeling of the same. 3. JOSEPH B.7 COMINGS (David6-5, Ephraims, Thomas3, John2, Isaaci) was b. Nov. 1, 1805, in Pelham. After the death of his father in 1819, he re- mained with his mother till he became of age. Soon after this he, with his brother Benjamin, came into possession of the farm and he built the brick house between their old home and the Baptist church. He then m. Oet. 1, 1835, Sybil P. Nevens of Cornish, dau. of David and Betsey (Pollard) Nevens, b. Feb. 14, 1808. Soon after he sold his interest to his brother and purchased the Bryant farm, a little north of the center of

the town, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a prosperous and successful farmer, for like Solomon, "he loved agriculture." Unlike many others, he, with the hearty cooperation of a prudent, energetic and devoted wife, made farming a complete financial success. He was the first to introduce into town the Durham cattle and took great interest in raising choice specimens of the breed. For several years he was one of the selectmen and twice represented the town in the state legislature. Although not a member of any religious body, he was always regular in attendance upon divine worship and contributed liberally to its support. He possessed the full confidence and respect of his townsmen and all others who knew him. He retained his faculties, his interest in his farm and in the topics of the day, to an advanced age. He d. July 6, 1897. His wife had previously d. May 11, 1887. Children, all b. in Cornish:

CAPT. GEORGE COOK lived on the river road not far north of the Claremont line while his brother, Godfrey, kept the celebrated Cook Hotel, south of the line where Erastus Reed now resides. Capt. George was a thrifty farmer. He was b. in 1773. He m. May 2, 1796, Tamison Wilson of Cornish, dau. of Robert and Patience Wilson, b. May 5, 1772, and d. April 18, 1849. He d. Oct. 29, 1850, aged 77. vii. LAURA AUGUSTA, b. March 16, 1813; m. Oct. 5, 1847, Hiram Putnam and lived in Claremont.


viii. JAMES AUGUSTUS, b. March 13, 1815; enlisted in the Civil War; came home and d. in Claremont.

CORBIN.


CLEMENT CORBIN was b. in Eng., in 1626. Was of Huguenot origin in France. Came to America in 1637 when eleven years of age. The generations following Clementi are: James?, James3, James', Dr. Jamess, who settled in Newport in 1790, as one of the pioneer physicians there. His oldest son, Austin6 Corbin, was b. at Newport Nov. 28, 1791. He had a sister, Lois6 Corbin, b. Jan. 19, 1794, who m. March 22, 1812, Hon. Eleazer Jackson of Cornish and had six children. (See Jackson.) Austin6 Corbin m. Oct. 27, 1817, Mary Chase, dau. of Daniel Chase, a famous hotel keeper in Claremont. Mr. Corbin was a teacher, selectman, pub- lisher, representative, state senator. Ile was a "zealous promoter of liberal Christianity, and was noted for politeness and hospitality." They had eight children: Austin7, their fourth child was b. July 11, 1827, in Newport; m. Aug. 16, 1853, Hannah M. Wheeler, a dau. of Simon and Hannah (Haven) Wheeler and granddau. of Rev. Jacob Havens of Croydon. (See sketch.) Mrs. Corbin d. Sept. 20, 1908. He d. June 4, 1896. Their children:


i. MARY, b. Sept. 6, 1855, in Davenport, Ia .; m. Oct. 23, 1878, René Cheromet Champollian of Paris, where they lived. She d. June 5, 1892. They had one child: André C.


ii. ARABELLA WALLACE, b. Oct. 30, 1858, in Davenport, Ia .; m. April 30, 1879, George S. Edgell of St. Louis. Three children.


iii. ANNA WHEELER, b. Feb. 26, 1863, in Davenport, la .; m. Nov., 1896, Hallet Alsop Barrowe.

COUCH.


JOHN MORTON COUCH was b. in Lee, Mass., March 6, 1795. He was the son of Stephen and Pollyphemia (Carrington) Couch; m. first, in Lee to Mary Gates in 1820. She d. in 1826, leaving three sons; m. second, in Meriden, in June, 1829, Fanny Goodale, dau. of Hosea and Cynthia (Andrews) Goodale, b. July 14, 1803, and d. Oct. 3, 1885. He d. Oct. 2, 1856. Mr. Couch was a harness maker, upright and straightforward in all his business relations. He came to Cornish Flat in 1745 where he lived several years and then rem., in 1854, to Holyoke, Mass. His children by Mary Gates, b. in Albany, N. Y .:

D. of Harvard in 1900; is prof. of chem. at University North Carolina. 2. Edgar Couch Wheeler graduated at Yale Theological Seminary; in 1899. was pastor of Congregational Church in Rockland, Mass. A third son, William, also graduated at Beloit College; in business in Tacoma.


x. DANIEL BRADFORD, b. Aug. 2, 1844; m. June 11, 1868, Maria Howard of Claremont, dau. of Joseph B. and Lucy (Sheldon) Howard. Three children. Res., Cal. Occupation, farmer.


2. JOHN LEVERETT2 COUCH (John Morton1) b. March 23, 1830; m. July 11, 1853, at Westmoreland, Permilla Dorchester Burr, dau. of Oliver and Celinda (Stowell) Burr of Thetford, Vt., b. Feb. 9, 1832; d. Feb. 15, 1895. After his father's family had left Cornish, he continued to reside there several years, carrying on the harness business. Then he removed to Claremont for two years, continuing in the same business in company with his brother, Daniel, then he rem. to St. Johnsbury, Vt., where he has since res., honored and respected. He d. July 27, 1906. Child: Mary Lizzie, b. Jan. 2, 1858, in Cornish. She m. May 18, 1882, James C. Moore, hardware merchant. Had three children. Res. in St. Johns- bury, Vt. 1. Leon John, b. July 11, 1883. 2. Frank Carlos, b. Nov. 21, 1884. 3. Roy Henry, b. Oct. 15, 1888.
