2. JOHN LANE, the fourth child of Justus and Huldah (Veasey) Lane, was b. July 30, 1809, in Westminster, Vt. He was a carpenter and builder. Lived several years in Claremont. He m. Sept. 16, 1836, Nancy J. Richardson of Cornish, dau. of Joseph and Polly (Hilliard) Richardson, b. Sept. 16, 1818. They came from Claremont to Cornish in Dec., 1848. Settled on the Joseph Richardson farm for several years; then rem. to Plainfield, where he d. April 21, 1873. After his death, his wid. rem. to Lebanon with her son where she d. Jan. 18, 1893. i. MARCUS M., b. March 18, 1840 in Claremont. He enlisted Aug. 22, 1862, in Co. I, 14th Regt. N. H. Vols. Was wounded Sept. 19, 1864, at the battle of Opequam Creek and discharged June 2, 1865. He m. Jan. 18, 1866, Helen M. Miller, of Plainfield, dau. of Jonathan and Anna (Thatcher) Miller, b. July 27, 1843. He settled in Lebanon, first as a mechanic and after- wards on a farm. Three children: 1. Mabel E., b. May 12, 1873. 2. John M., b. Sept. 26, 1876. 3. Ralph R., b. July 4, 1882.


ii. ABBIE A., b. Dec. 11, 1843, in Claremont; m. Oct. 7, 1865, Charles P. Fifield of Plainfield. He d. Jan. 25, 1871, aged 38. She d. without issue July 16, 1877. (Tombstone record says, July 18, 1876.)

WILLIAM and Hannah LANE lived many years in Cornish. He probably d. in town but there are no records showing the fact. Hannah d. Aug. 19, 1829, aged 64. Their children were:


i. WILLIAM, b. Aug. 26, 1800. Hle never m .; was somewhat eecentric; a great lover of military display; was deficient in some mental qualities. Was for many years known as "Judge Lane."

LEAR.


NEHEMIAH LEAR was b. Oct. 17, 1802, in Goshen; was the son of Robert and Lydia (Angell) Lear; m. first, Nov. 2, 1825, Eleanor Crowell of Bow, dau. of Jonathan and Anna (Corlis) Crowell, b. May 1, 1801, and d. March 22, 1859. About the time of his marriage he settled in Cornish, where all his children were b. Soon after his wife's death, he rem. to Newport, and afterward to Sunapee, where he spent the rest of his life. He in. second, May 22, 1862, Nancy C. Jacobs. She d. and he m. third, Aug. 29, 1875, Mary C. Perkins. He was a farmer, also a Capt. in the 15th Regt., State Militia, several years. He d. in Sunapee, Dec. 11, 1884. Children, all by first wife:

LEAVITT.


HALSEY C. LEAVITT was b. in Gouverneur, N. Y., Sept. 27, 1827; was the young- est of eight children. In 1842, he was bap. into the Baptist Church of his native town. Soon after, he began holding meetings and preach- ing in schoolhouses. Choosing the ministry for his life work, he, after fitting, was ordained, Feb. 15, 1861, pastor of the church in West Bol- ton, Vt., where he remained four years, and then in Swanton, Vt., three years. In 1867, he accepted a call from the Baptist Church in Cornish. Here he remained five years, a very efficient and much beloved pastor .* After this, he served the Newport church six years, during which time he represented the town in the state legislature. He then returned to Vermont, where, in South Londonderry, he labored a few years and d. Jan. 2, 1885. He m. Oct. 3, 1853, Romanda Leach of his native town, who survived him over twenty years, dying Sept. 23, 1906. Children, both b. in Gouverneur, N. Y .:


i. JULIUS ADELBERT, b. March 4, 1855. Grad. at K. U. Academy, class 1870; Brown University in 1875. He then studied at Newton Theological Seminary; was called to the church in Grafton, Vt., April 1, 1876. Here, on the 30th of May follow- ing, he m. Isabel I. Brown of Providence, R. I. Was ordained June 24, of the same year. May 1, 1877, he became pastor of the church in Essex Junction, Vt. He remained here three years and then accepted a call to the church in Beloit, Kan., hoping by the change to benefit the health of Mrs. Leavitt, but she d. soon after settling in Kansas. He m. second, Dec. 29, 1880, Lillie L. Lemon of Collinsville, Ill. After remaining two and one-half years in Beloit, he went to the Leavenworth Baptist Church, where he remained until called to the superin- tendency of the Sunday school work of the state of Illinois. In the autumn of 1890, he accepted the presidency of Ewing (Illinois) College, which position he still hokls. Two children-one by each wife.


ii. HATTIE AMELIA, b. Jan. 29, 1857. Was educated at New London Academy, and afterwards studied music in Boston. She m. Jan. 18, 1885, James A. Bardwell. She res. in Brattleboro, Vt.


1. NATIIAN LEAVITT was b. Dec. 31, 1795, in Sanbornton. Came to Gran- tham, when a small lad. Remained there until 1836, when he came to Cornish. IIe m. Jan. 19, 1825, Eliza B. Wheeler; b. Jan. 19, 1804, in Rehoboth, Mass. (now Warren), and d. Nov. 19, 1892. Mr. Leavitt d. in Cornish March 3, 1878. A prosperous farmer; made dairying and stock raising a specialty. Children:

iii. HENRY, b. Nov. 9, 1839; m. April 30, 1868, Edna Hall, dau. of Wil- liam Hall of Croydon, b. -. They res. at Ayer Junction, Mass., where he is employed on the railroad. They have three children.


2. ELIAS S .? LEAVITT (Nathan1) b. July 8, 1835; m. Sept. 7, 1859, Laura Smith of Hanover. Res. in Cornish many years on the paternal home- stead until Nov., 1887, when they rem. to Hanover. Now (1903) res. in West Lebanon. A farmer. Was selectman in Cornish two years. Mr. Leavitt was a man possessed of a kind and generous disposition that was always shown toward his neighbors, sometimes with seeming dis- regard of his own financial interests. Children:


i. MARION CIIELLIS, b. Jan. 5, 1866; m. first, Oct., 18SS, Charles H. Nye; m. second, August 24, 1902, Arthur V. Ruggles of Clinton, Mass. One child, a son.


ii. LEONARD FRANK, b. April 20, 1868; m. Jan. 3, 1893, Maud M. Saw- yer of South Acton, Mass. One child, a dau.


iii. GEFFANENA KATE, b. March 23, 1875; m. June 6, 1895, Dr. Herbert H. Lamson of Windsor, Vt.


ROSWELL LEAVITT was b. in Charlemont, Mass., Jan. 2, 1775. His grand- parents were Joshua and Mary (Winchell) Leavitt of Suffield, Conn. They had eight children; his father, Rev. Jonathan Leavitt, being one of the number, was b. in Suffield Jan. 22, 1731. Grad. at Yale College in 1758; ord. (Cong.) at Walpole, May 27, 1761; m. Dec. 10, 1761, Sarah Hooker of Farmington, Conn. Removed to Charlemont in Oct., 1768, he was pastor until his death, Sept. 9, 1802; his wife having d. Oct. 11, 1791. They had one daughter and eleven sons. Roswell was the eighth of their twelve children. The records do not show where he was educated, but presumably at Williams College. He was m. in Greenfield, Mass., Sept. 25, 1798, to Dorothy Ashley of Charlemont. She was dau. of Jonathan and Tirzah (Field) Ashley, and b. in Deer- field, Mass., March 3, 1776. Soon after their marriage, they came on horseback to Cornish, where they lived, and Doctor Leavitt practiced medicine successfully until his death, Nov. 4, 1817. He built the large two-story brick house near the Flat, since occupied by Darwin J. Spauld- ing. His wife remained in Cornish until 1833, and then rem. to Bos- ton to be with her children. She d. Oct. 9, 1846, at the home of her son-in-law, Rev. G. C. Beckwith, and is buried at Mt. Auburn. Chil- dren, all b. in Cornish:


i. JONATHAN, b. July 23, 1799; d. Aug. 16, 1800.

ii. JONATHAN, b. Oct. 21, 1800; m. first, Charlotte E. Stearns of Bed- ford, Mass., Oet. 10, 1837. Had two children. She d. Feb. 27, 1850. Later in life he m. second, Mrs. Abby (Johnson) Pack- ard of Providence, R. I. He grad. at Amherst College as vale- dictorian in 1825, and three years later from Andover Theologi- cal Seminary. Ord. Sept. 24, 1828. Settled as Cong. pastor in Bedford, Mass. After some years he settled over Richmond Street Church in Providence, where he d. Oet. 7, 1877, aged 77, and is buried at Mt. Auburn.


iii. ROSWELL, b. Aug. 14, 1802, and d. Aug. 10, 1803.


iv. ROSWELL, b. Sept. 14, 1803; d. while a student at Amherst College, Dec. 28, 1828, aged 25.


v. DOROTHY ASHLEY, b. March 22, 1805. Educated as teacher at Meriden and Ashfield (Mass.) Academies. She m. Aug. 12, 1829, Rev. Aaron Foster, whose name and distinguished serv- ices of forty-five years as pastor and missionary are well known. He d. April 10, 1870, aged 76, at Geneva, N. Y. She d. there, March 10, 1882, aged 77. They were both interred at Mt. Auburn. They left one son and five daughters.


vi. HART HOOKER, b. Feb. 12, 1807. When quite young, he went into the hat and fur business in Boston at 91 Court St., where he continued through life. He m. Dee. 29, 1836, Elizabeth Noakes of Boston. She d. Nov. 18, 1878. He d. in Cambridge July 28, 1885, aged 78. Both lie buried in Mt. Auburn. No chil- dren.


vii. ERASMUS DARWIN, b. Dec. 20, 1809. Studied medicine at Dart- mouth College. Settled as physician in Lowell, Mass., where he remained about thirty years. Thence he rem. to Cambridge- port, Mass., where he spent the remainder of his life in the same profession. He m. Nov. 30, 1835, Almira Fay, who was b. Dec. 13, 1812, in Warwick, Mass. They celebrated their golden wedding with five sons, one dau. and twenty grandchildren present. The eldest son is an engineer and machinist of wide reputation; three are elergymen and one is in mercantile life. Doctor Leavitt d. Oct. 3, 1888. She d. Feb. 20, 1895.

viii. GEORGE WASHINGTON, b. March 12, 1811; d. Feb. 20, 1828, aged 17. MARTHIA WASHINGTON, twin sister of the last; m. Oct., 1833, Rev. G. C. Beckwith, D.D., a grad. of Middlebury College and Ando- ver Seminary. Pastor in Portland, Me., and Boston, Mass. Was sent as peace commissioner to the courts of Eng. and France. He d. in Boston May 12, 1870, and his wife, April 6, 1881, aged 70. Both are interred in Mt. Auburn.


x. CHARLOTTE JANE, b. Nov. 26, 1813; d. Jan. 15, 1824, aged 11.

REV. GEORGE LESLIE was b. in Colerain, Ireland, in 1728. Came when very young to America. Was educated at Harvard University and then set-

tled in the ministry in Ipswich, Mass. In 1780 he accepted a call to settle in Washington, where he preached until his death, Sept. 11, 1800, having spent about fifty years in the ministry. He was tendered a professorship in Dartmouth College but declined it. "He was a man of brilliant genius, and great learning, and eminent for piety and moral- ity." (Epitaph on tombstone.) His wife, Hepsibah Burpee, d. April 11, 1814. They had eight children, all b. in Ipswich, Mass., except the last one:


i. GEORGE, JR., m. Miriam Burpee. Lived in Washington.


ii. DAVID, m. and res. in Washington. Had four children. In old age he came to, and d. in Cornish, in Oet., 1835.

Became a successful teacher in which he took much pride; of somewhat vain deportment, yet a man of fair ability and judgment and of good morals. He spent several years teaching in Mass. "on the Cape." While thus engaged he formed the acquaintance of Betsey Sears, b. Dec. 19, 1821, whom he m. March 27, 1842. He spent the rest of his life at farming in town. Betsey d. Jan. 14, 1879, aged 60. He m. second, March 15, 1881, Eva L. Newton, dau. of Rufus and Laura W. Newton, b. Feb. 22, 1854, and d. June 10, 1903. No issue. He d. Oct. 26, 1887. After the death of Mr. Leslie his wid. m. Nov. 17, 1887, Worth C. Jordan and by him had one child. (See Jordan.) Children, all by first wife and b. in Cornish:

Jan. 7, 1845, d. March 17, 1886. He d. Aug. 31, 1873. Before his m. he enlisted in the Civil War. (See Military.) Children, both b. in town:

LEWIS.


SAMUEL LEWIS was b. in Dublin, in 1772. He m. Aug. 23, 1796, Mary White, dau. of Thomas and Mary (French) White. They came to town with at least three children: Thomas, Benj. S. and Samuel, Jr. The latter was probably the oldest of the three, was b. in 1797. Lived in town with his wife, Harriet Belding, whom he m. Jan. 15, 1817, and had one son Henry, b. Nov. 25, 1817, and they evidently soon after left town.


THOMAS? LEWIS (Samuel1) was b. in Dublin, -, came to town when young (date uncertain); m. Oct. 18, 1821, Mary Turner (pedigree unknown). Their children were:

Aug. 27, 1827, Abigail Westgate of Cornish, dau. of Joseph and Abigail (Luey) Westgate, b. April 19, 1807, and d. April 17, 1872. He was a carpenter and general worker in wood. He d. June 19, 1876. Children, all b. in Cornish:


i. MARTHA MARIA, b. Oct. 31, 1828; m. April 13, 1858, A. P. Carpenter. Lived in Amherst. One son, M. B. Carpenter, b. Aug. 13, 1859. She d. Jan. 28, 1906.


ii. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, b. March 29, 1830; d. April 14, 1830.


iii. BENJAMIN EDWARD, b. Dec. 27, 1831; m. July 18, 1865, Emma Lam- phire. No children. They separated. He lived in Springfield, Vt. A carpenter. He d. Feb. 1, 1907.


iv. Infant of a few days, d. Jan. 6, 1832.


v. JAMES MUNROE, b. Nov. 26, 1833; m. Sept. 27, 1864, Ellen P. Sparling of Claremont. She d. June 7, 1900. Three children: 1. Everetta M., b. Aug. 14, 1865. 2. William Sparling, b. Sept. 18, 1870. 3. Evelena May, b. Sept. 29, 1873; d. June 21, 1880. Mr. Lewis was a carpenter and lived in Claremont. He d. Feb. 16, 1911, in Peterborough.


vi. ELIZA ANN, b. April 9, 1837; m. May 5, 1861, John Farwell. Three children: 1. George F., b. June 16, 1861. 2. Frank D., b. Oct. 31, 1862. 3. Carl E., b. Aug. 19, 1877; d. April 18, 1879. She d. Jan. 10, 1886. Mr. Farwell d. March 24, 1902.

LINDSAY.


JAMES B. LINDSAY, son of Robert W. Lindsay was b. in 1824, in Montreal, Can. He was of Scotch descent. He m. Helen Phaneuf of St. Antoine, Can., at Woodstock, Vt. When the Civil War broke out they res. in Enfield, from which place he enlisted in 1862, in Co. C, in the 15th Regt. N. HI. Vols. They had eight children b. to them. They came to Cornish to live in 1888, from Claremont. Two sons besides their par- ents became res. of Cornish, the other children made homes elsewhere. Mr. Lindsay d. March 31, 1901.


MARVIN B. LINDSAY, son of James B. and Helen Lindsay, was b. Sept. 27, 1873, in Keene. Came to Cornish with his parents and settled on the Chauncey P. Jenney place, south of, and overlooking the Flat; in. Sept. 27, 1896, Nettie B. Churchill of Cornish, dau. of Barker B. and Mrs. Mary (Westgate) (Britton) Churchill, b. Feb. 20, 1868. Their chil- dren, all b. in town, are:


i. Infant son, b. April 21, 1897; d. April 22, 1897.


ii. HELEN MARY, b. July 25, 1898.


iii. AGNES LUCY, b. Feb. 16, 1900.


iv. JAMES BARKER, b. Jan. 15, 1902.

BENJAMIN F. LINDSAY, son of James B. and Helen Lindsay was b. in Hart- land, Vt., March 10, 1880; m. Feb. 11, 1902, Grace M. Ayers, of Man- chester. Children: 1. James B., b. Sept. 28, 1903; d. Jan. 31, 1904. 2. Helen P., b. April 26, 1905; d. March 18, 1907. Settled on a farm south of his brother's farm. Devotes much of his time to ministerial labor. Is at present (1909) pastor of a newly formed church at So. Cornish. Was ord. Oct. 25, 1908. (See mention of the church in Church His- tory.) Mrs. Grace M. Lindsay d. June 13, 1910.

GENEALOGIES.


LITTLE.


HIRAM LITTLE, the son of Samuel and Sarah (Pettingill) Little, was b. March 1, 1807, in Springfield. He m. Nov. 14, 1832, Roxana Carr, dau. of Peter and Sarah (Mitchell) Carr, b. March 30, 1809. They came from East Plainfield in 1835 and settled on Cornish Flat at the east end of Main Street. He built the brick house on the south side of the street where they spent the rest of their lives. He was a wheelwright and carriage and sleigh manufacturer. Was a very thorough workman and strictly honest. Some of his carriages have been in use over fifty years and still rendering good service. He was a man trusted and beloved by all his townsmen. He served six years as a selectman and six years as Treas. of the town. They had but one child: Hiram Aden, unfortunately born idiotic, b. June 17, 1844, and d. July 13, 1867. Mr. Little d. Nov. 12, 1860. His wid. afterwards, March 12, 1872, m. Rufus Bean of Lebanon, who came and lived on the Flat till he d. Nov. 11, 1886, aged 82. She d. Sept. 10, 1890.
