CADY.
The name Cady was quite common during the earliest years of the town. It appears that later most of them left town as after a few years the name faded from the records, and the cemeteries show but few burials of those bearing the name. Their earliest ancestor known was Nicholası who emigrated in 1645 to Watertown, Mass. He had a son, Capt. Joseph2, who in turn had a son, William3, who settled in Killingsly, Conn. He had a son, Abijah4, b. there July 14, 1718, who m. first, Aug. 24, 1749, Alice Nichols, who d. Nov. 7, 1751; m. second, May 24, 1763, Miriam Wilson. They lived several years in Plainfield, Conn., and then came to Cornish where he d. in 1777. Their children, so far as known, were by first wife:

CARPENTER.
NATHANIEL CARPENTER was b. in Pomfret, Conn., July 18, 1756; m. June 20, 1775, Elfreda Dresser, a sister of Huldah Dresser, who m. Lieut. Eleazer Jackson, b. Oct. 16, 1759. They settled in Cornish about 1775 and re- mained till after the close of the century. They then rem. to Strafford, Vt., and a little later to Hanover, where they finally settled on a farm. three fourths of a mile south of the college on the river road, where he d. Oct. 15, 1829. Elfreda d. May 11, 1840, in Strafford, Vt. The census. of 1790 says the family at that time in Cornish consisted of himself and three sons under sixteen, and his wife and two daus. CARROLL.
In 1672 Nathaniel and Mary Carroll were residents of Norfolk Co., Mass. Their son, Nathaniel?, had a son, Samuel3, who had a son, Joseph4; b. in Sutton, Mass., in 1732, who m. Nov. 21, 1761, Judith Chase of Sutton, a dau. of Philip and Mary (Follansbe) Chase. Nine children. Joseph5, their eldest son, b. Dec. 10, 1763, m. April 6, 1788, Mary Prince, b. Aug. 7, 1763. They came to Croydon in 1792 and settled in Ryder Corner district. Six children. Josephs d. March 18, 1845; Mary d. July 10, 1822. Their second son, John Princes Carroll, was b. in Croydon Sept. 2, 1793; m. first, Nov. 20, 1817, Rachel Powers, dau. of Ezekiel Powers, b. Feb. 27, 1797, and d. May 6, 1839, in Croydon. About the year 1840 he rem. with his family to Cornish and spent the remainder of his life there. Was a stirring, energetie man; a cooper, also a farmer. Nine children, all b. in Croydon, but all of them lived for a time in Cornish. He m. second, -, Hannah Spaulding of Cornish, dau. of Daniel and Hannah Spaulding. No children. He d. June 15, 1867. Joseph came to town when young; m. Nov. 15, 1804, Margaret Taylor of Cornish, dau. of Capt. Joseph and Elizabeth (Sumner) Taylor, b. June 7, 1782, and d. April 15, 1855. He d. April 24, 1843. CHAPMAN.
1. DR. JOSEPHS CHAPMAN (Benjamin4, Samuel3-2, Edward1) was the oldest child of Capt. Benjamin and Jemima (Gates) Chapman and was b. Dec. 12, 1757; m. in 1782, Martha Jirauld of Cornish, dau. of Dea. Reuben and Joanna (Spaulding) Jirauld, b. Aug. 2, 1759, and d. March 15, 1855, aged 95. He settled on the farm afterwards owned and occupied by Rev. D. P. Deming and more recently by Fred Read. He was a physi- cian and is said to have been one of the first of his profession in town. He d. April 3, 1810, aged 53. Children, all b. in town:
i. JOSEPH, JR., b. Sept. 19, 1783; m. and lived in Irasburg, Vt. He d. in 1856.

v. BETSEY, b. June 28, 1791; m. Sept. 30, 1810, Septimus Read, "a farmer in Cornish." Six children. (See Read.) She d. July 21, 1874.
vi. BELA, b. July 19, 1793; m. a French and Indian girl and lived in Mackinaw, Mich., and had several children.

viii. JouN, b. July 19, 1797; in. July 22, 1820, Eliza Kissock, dau. of Dr. Kissock. Seven children, six sons and one daughter. He was a
physician and practiced in Round Brook, N. J. He d. in 1876.

2. BENJAMIN6 CHAPMAN (Josephs, Benjamin4, Samuel3-2, Edward1) was b. July 18, 1784; m. - , Theoda Colburn, dau. of John and Theoda (Dunham) Colburn, b. June 11, 1792, and d. Oct. 13, 1859, aged 67. He was a farmer and surveyor, a prominent man in his day, filling many important positions in town and state. He drew plans of Cornish and adjoining towns and made surveys of nearly every road and farm in Cornish and Plainfield. He was also justice of the peace and legal counsellor for all requiring such services in these towns. A man of firm integrity, unquestionable honor and sound judgment. He lived on the homestead of his father till advanced in life; then a few years in Plain- field, where he d. Dec. 8, 1865, aged 81. Children, all b. in Cornish:
i. EMELINE LOUISA, b. Oct. 10, 1819; m. - , George M. Chase of Cornish. Two children. (See Chase.) She d. June 7, 1859.
ii. BENJAMIN WADE, b. Jan. 29, 1821; m. May 17, 1848, Sarah Phillips of Plainfield. A carpenter and farmer before the Civil War. He then went as a drummer and d. in the service at Vicksburg, Miss., Aug. 7, 1863. Four children :
iii. MARTHA MARIETTA, b. July 1, 1822; m. first, Leonard Conroy of Billerica, Mass .; m. second, John Tileston of Windsor, Vt., where she d. March 2, 1892.
iv. ELLEN LORETTA, b. Sept. 28, 1823; m. first, Nov. 15, 1842, Newton Jackson of Cornish. Three children. (See Jackson.) Mr. Jackson d. April 2, 1871; m. second, Feb. 14, 1883, Jacob Beal, who d. Oct. 14, 1898. Living in So. Cornish in 1910.
v. PAMELIA AMANDA, b. Jan. 20, 1826; m. July 12, 1857, Lewis Horton. No children. Res. at Dorchester, Mass.

CHASE.
AQUILLA1 CHASE, b. in Conway, Eng., in 1618, was the honored ancestor of all of this name who have ever lived in Cornish. With two of his brothers he came to America in 1639, and settled in Hampton. He m. Ann Wheeler, rem. to Newbury, Mass., in 1646 and d. there Dec. 27, 1670. They had eleven children.
Their youngest son, Moses2, sometimes called "Ensign Moses," was b. Dec. 24, 1663. He lived and d. in Newbury. He m. Nov. 10, 1684, Anne Follansbe. They had nine children. Their eldest son Daniels was b. Sept. 20, 1685; m. Jan. 2, 1707, Sarah March. Rem. to Sutton, Mass., about 1730, and d. there April 17, 1768, aged 83. They were the parents of ten children. Three of their sons: Samuel4, Caleb4* and Moses4, with their families settled in Cornish. Some of them came at the time of settlement of the town in 1765 and others soon followed. A few representative men of other families joined them in the work and hardships incident to the new settlement.
