INJURY PROVES FATAL TO AVA BUSINESS MAN


C. H. Donny Brought to St. John's Hospital for Treat- ment Last Tuesday After Having Been Struck by Car.


C. H. Danny. 72 years old, owner of the Ara Marble Works and promi- nent Douglas county business man for many years. died at 6:30 o'clock last night in a hospital here fol- lowing injuries suffered Tuesday morning when run down by an auto- mobile as he attempted to cross a street in Ara. .


Mr. Denny was brought to Spring- fleld following the accident and placed in the St. John's hospital. Examination disclosed that he had suffered . broken left leg and a fractured skull' :'


His condition grew worse until his death last night. He had been un- conscious since the accident.


Mr. Denny is survived by his wife and & daughter, Mra. W. O. Man- Lin of Bakersfield, Calif. The body will be taken overland to Ara today by the Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral home. Funeral services will be held 1 Tuesday afternoon at Ava.

Henry Hayes Came to United States From Germany When Two Years Old


Republic'a village blacksmith. Henry Hayes, friend and confident of townspeople and farmers for many years and a former mayor of Republic, died at his farm home late . Saturday night after a long illness.


Born In Amsterdam, Germany, in 1841. Mr. Hayes came to the United States when he was little more than two years old. The family moved Immediately to a farm In Southwest Missouri, and young Hayes grew up near Republic.


· Well Known Character '


For 27 years he occupied a po- sition In Republic much like that of Longfellows famous character. spending most of his time In his blacksmith shop. About 15 years ago Republic's political leaders put their heads together and decided the village blacksmith was the log- ¡ ical mon for mayor. lle was elect- ed easily.


Ten years ago ill health forced ; him to retire from his shop, and he : moved to the George O'Bryant farm three mulies cast of Republic, where he died .? " Ho, is survived only "by two".children, Jerome' Hayes of Springfield and Mrs. Ella Ward of the home address.


Buried Today


Funeral services were conduct- ed at the farm home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon with the Rev. E. C. Bechler. of. Springfield deliv- ering the funeral sermon. Burlal was in Evergreen cemetery at Itepublic under the direction of the It. E. Thurman Undertaking com- pany.

Mrs. Lillie Kelgore of Dexter Dangerously Injured in Mishap Here


.Mrs. Lillie Kelgore, 64, of Dexter, Mo., was dangerously Injured yes- terday when a Hudson sedan in which she was riding owith her daughter, Mrs. R. V. Bardon, and her granddaughter, Miss Gladys Baugh, both. of Tulan, Okla., was struck by . Another .car and turned over at the Intersection of High- way 66 and Nichols road early in the afternoon. .


'A Starne ambulance brought the injured woman to Springfield, where the was given medical .at- tention. : The three . women are staying at 816 South National boulevard. there they obtained rooms later.


All Strangers Here All are strangers in Springfield. They were en route from Tulsa to Dexter.


Mra. Kelgore was Badly cut.and bruised, with especially severe cute. on one leg and wrist, and her back was injured so that she was un- able to rise or stand last night. The physician attending was un- able last night to say how danger - ous the Injury to her back ia, and said that it might take a day or more to determine its extent. He! does not, however, belleve that it will be permanent.

HEART ATTACK IS FATAL TO UNION VETERAN HERE


George W. Tunnell. 92. 1968 How- ard avenue, died suddenly at his beme yesterday afternoon of a heart attack. He had seemed in his osual health, and had eaten à bearty meal at noon.


Mr. Tunpell was a U'nion soldier during the Civil War, and later en- cared in cattle raising for many i years. He was one of the oldest Masons in Missouri. He is aur- vived by his wife and one son. Joe Tunsell, at Mountain View. Mo ..
