PROFESSOR FINDS OZARKIANS FORGET ANCIENT DIALECT
Arkansan Says Many Out- side Two States Still Believe Razorback Hogs Run Wild in District
FAYETTEVILLE. Ark., Nov. : 0. -A pretty myth has grown up outside Arkansas and Missourl that along the detour trails of the ! Ozarks natives still cling to the tongue of their Chaucerian ancest- ors. That legend is as false as those ! of the absence of shoes and the pre- valence of undomesticated spindle- hacked swine itt the mountain re- : treats of the present-day Ozarkians. Dean Virgil L. Jones, professor of English at the I'niversity of Arkan- sas. declared today.
Makes Long Study
-
For many years Dean Jones has been. making a study of mountain dialecte. comparing that of ' the Ozarks with those of the bative knobe in Tennessee and of the Caro- linas in the Appalachians. But one word has he found in the Ozark regione that smacks at all of Chancerian origin. The word in "hit" in referring to the .mpersona! ! pronoun it. "Ilit's a boy." a jubil- ant father will explain to an awalt- ins throng outside hus calin door at The birth of a son. But that le xx tar ax this descendant of pure Anglo-Saxon stock . will lapse 1010 the vernacular of : his; Chaucerisa progenitore, Dean Jones said.

"Our speech : in the Ozarks," bo explained." has leas dialect than the of . the Appalachiana. Its peculiari- ties are gradually . dying out, how" over.'. as our language becomes standardized ."by the schoolmarm, the speeling. book' and . the diction- ary. But little of the' dialect of the Ozarks antedates the 18th cedtury. So standardized has the Ozarklan consus become that even in the most seclydedi.recesses of the Ozarks, one today might hear par- enta in unconscious mimicry of their offspringy (1 school age pronounce 'nunt' an Webster would have us with a brond 'a' accent."
Mountain Dialec Probably only about two of the
