"The stars form & definite system which, like a swarm of bees. is drift- ing through open space." Is the way Ur. Hubble explains his theory. mo Miounding to science. "The system la !ons-shaped-like a thin watch- and the sun. a typical star: is some,- where icar the cei.'er. The Milky Way indicates the direction of the rim of the stellar system.

"Ours is but one swarm: out in space beyond the borders of our sys- teni. there are countless olbers. We see them as small. falut patches of light scattered over the Isce of the sky and we call them nebular. The largest telescopes show the most con-

spicuous of them as swarms of stars of the same general nature as our own. .;

" Among the stars in these neigh- boring nebulae, several types have been identified which are well known in our own system. We know their Intrinsic brightness, hence their ap- parent faintness as we see them, in- dicates their distances. This gives us a measuring rod with which we can explore the universe out as far as tel- escopee can reach.

"The largest telescope-the 100 - inch reflector on Mt. Wilson-No- veals most of the nebulae out to a distance so great that light, travel- ing at 180,000 miles per woond, takes nearly 150.000,000 years to reach us. A sphere of this radius represents the observable region of space. Several million nebulae are scattred through- out this sphere and In the midst of one of them is our sun with Its fam- illy of tiny planets, including the !earth on which we live."
