83-Year-Old Frisco Surgeon, Still Serves
Dr. Billings of Lebanon Has Devoted Half of Life to Tend- ing Frisco Employes-Recently Joined Wife Celebrating 60th Anniversary ..
-
----
-
For forty-one of hia eighty-three' years has Dr. J. M. Blilinga been a Frisco local surgeon at Lebanon. Mo .. and the winter of 1927-1928 finde him : a kindly philosopher. tenderly cher- lahing the memory of the celebration by him and his wife of their six- lleth wedding anniversary recently and wondering if there are any other surgeons who have served the Frisco as long as he.
Doctor Billings was residing at Le- banon when he received his appoint- ment as local surgeon for the Frisco In 1886. He has beld this position at
.. Lebanon ever since, and is in active practice in town and. as he says. "rid- ing o'er the hills of the Ozarks."
-
As he recalls it Dr. John Mcin- tire was chief surgeon for the Frisco at that time. "Following him was that splendid man and surgeon. Doc- tor Lutz." said Doctor Billings. "Then that quiet. unassuming man. Dr. Cole, whom we all admired and lov- ed, and now the present chief, Dr. Woolsey. another prince of a fellow. with his pleasant smile and hearty handshake.
---
"During these forty-one years of service, many change and Improve- menta have been made, both in road And gunment from & EmAnt rond 12 one of the large system of the United States.
Few Surgeons In Early Days.
"In the early days there were but few surgeons appointed. My recollec- tion la that there were only two, be- tween St. Louis and Springfield.
--
Now there an hundrede on the sys- item, and all together they make a splendid bunch of doctors, qualified and willing to go any time to minis- ter to the elck and Injured to the best of their ability.
"The Frisco Medical association was organized several years ago while Dr. Cole was chief at Springfield and he was the first president. It was my pleasure to be one of the charter members of that organization and I hava missed but two meetings ance it was organized.
"Formerly we had poor equipment
for taking care of the injured. Now we have a splendid system of boe- pitala, well equipped. where every- thing can be done that human skill can accomplish.
"We Goctora do not have so much to do now am formerly, owing to the Improvement in the road equipment
and careful management of train j crews and danger signals.
Wrecks were frequen.i theu. now they are but few. All praime to the safety first movement which la saving ; miany 1.ves. This may be hard on the . doctor's pocket book but life is of . more value than money. Keep the good work going.
"Many of our former co-workers have laid down the scalpel and anw and gone to their reward in the Be- soud. Muy we profit by their labora . in this work for humantt: "
