Parents Away When House at Willow Springs Bursts Into Flames-Body of Two- Year-Old Recovered from Ruins-Rescuers Too Late.

The 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Ware, residing four miles cast of Willow Springs on highway 60. was burned to death at 5 o'clock . yesterday afternoon when their home was totally destroyed by fire.


At the time fire broke out. Mr .! Waye was in the timber cutting wood. His wife was visiting with neighbors. Si4 bor

Body Sent Home.


The body of Robert Martin, of West Plains, who was killed in an ac- cident in san Francisco. Jast Thurs- day, arrived at West Plains yesterday and was taken to the home of the ¡ young man's parents, Mr. and Mrs. i Joc. M. Martin.


Young Martin lost his life when he Was struck by a gravel conveyor while working for the Pacific Gravel Co. a large concern which hundics all kit:ds of building materials. The body was forwarded to West Plains by rel- 1 atives who live In San Francisco.

Veteran Merchant Of DeSoto is Dead At Pythian's Home


Charles H. R. Hancock, 93, re- tired Merchant from DeSoto, Mn .. died at the Pythian home here last night at 11:30 o'clock. Mr. Han- cock was born in London, July 14. 1834, and emigrated to the United States in 1856, coming to DeRoto. where he lived until he moved to St. Louis about eight years ago. He was very active up to two years ago. when he and his wife came to the Pythian home to live.


He is survived by his wife, Mra. Martha Ann Hancock. nine children. 28 grandchildren, and numerous grent-grandchildren. .


His children nro Mrs. Dorothy Harriet Splence, Mrs. S. M. R. Snell. Mra. Charles May Landult. Mrs. Nell Wynoa, and William J. Han- cock, all of DeSoto; Mrs. Cora E. Hercher. Barnhardt, Mo., Mra. B. Frown . John B. Hancock, and Charles H. Hancock, all of St. Louis.

Woman, 86, Stuck to Her Pipe and Husband


"I'll ,o With You if I Have to Live'on Bread and Water," She Told Mate Before Perilous Trip; Spouse Planted- First Orchard In Webster County.

Mrs. Jasper Dodson has smoked pipe for forty years, but she didn't start Smoking at a bridge club, sorority meeting, or even at a road house. She waited until she was over forty to commence, and what's more, the commenced at home with her husband.

Mrs. Dodson will be 86 next Sun- day. New Year's Day. Two weeks ago she moved to Springfield from Web- ster county where she has lived for sixty years.


She remembers distinctly the Civil war. and spoke of it yesterday as the "recent" war. "Living in Ray county. eastern Tennessee, at the time, she experienced many thrilling. incidents in connection with the great strug- gle.


"One day two soldiers rode up to our house, and one of them said to my father, You belong to the rebels, don't you. old man? We'll have to take a few things: I hear you have a couple of race horses hidden in the woods'.


"My father never did have any race horses," MrL. Dodson continued, "but he came right out and said. I don't have any race borste, but I've got the finest mare that you ever laid eyes

Dodson, who had been: a soldier in the Georgia regular once, they'set out for the west in & covered wagon drawn by oxen.


Mr. Dodson .warned his wife against the bardships of the trip but she replied. "I'll go with you uf I have to live on bread and water."


There were practically no roads In southern Illinois and Missouri at the time, Mrs. Dodson mld. Some of the hills were so steep that the two wo- men in the party were . put in one of the wagons and covered with

wagon sheet so that they couldn't sce how step the hills actually were.


At night Que of the men always had to remain awake to keep the Indians from stealing the oren.

Wild Life was plentiful at first, and Mrs.' Dodson bas often told her chil- dren how wild turkeys would ny up out of the yard when they got up in the morning. Deer were so num. erous that they were often moen Jumping over the farmers' fences.

"My husband was a great hand to smoke." Mrs. Dodson said yesterday picking up her corn cob pipe. "After a while I began to ask him to let me try it. and he would let me puff at t · · pipe. One day I said, 'You ought in get me a pipe and let me smoke He did, and I've been smoking ever : since."


-MI, Dodion was with the Frlaco for 42 years. He died in 1912.


Mrs. Dodson Is now Uving with her son-in-law and daughter. Mr. and Mr. O. H. Wheeler of 848 College street. A son, Hugh Dodson, lives here with her.


She was one of a family of twelve children. 8he has nine children Itv- Ing. She has 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Child Lives with Her 4 Grandparents and Great Grandparents


Mary Belle has so many grandpar- ents she can't keep track of all 'of them-five to be exact. 'Affairs wouldn't be so complicated If so many of them didn't live with Mary Belle. but four of them do. One of the four is away on a visit now but Mery Belle says the misses him so. she wishes he would hurry back.


Mary Belle's other name Is Brackett and she lives at 985 Boonville. Bo do her great grandmother. Mra. Mar- garet Humbird, her grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. Georgs Blair, and her great grandfather. E. P. Blair. Until two weeks ago, when her great-grandmother. Mrs. E. P. Blair died. Mary Belle lived with five of her grand-parcuts. Mrs. J. Brackett, another grandmother lives In Spring- fleld.


Mary Belle tried to tell today about her grandparents. "Well." she began, naming them on her fingers, "There's grandma and grandpa and great grandma and great grandpa and grandma and-oh, grandma, you tell It." But Mary Belle, who la 7 years old, started again. "Well, you see."

Tift marriage of Miss Opal Nelson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Riley Nelson, to the Rev. Ben L. Schmidtke, was solemnized Monday evening at 8 o'clock In Grace M. E. churchi. Dr. Nelson performed the ceremony. using the double ring service and Dr. I. D. Harris stood with him as an honor guest. The altar of the church was banked with ferns, palins and chrysanthemums in n charming floral arrangement. Pre- reding the ceremony Bernice Strain sang "O Promisc Me." and Miss Hazel Gates sang "Because." Miss Bessie Bloomer accompanied them at the pipe orgun. Miss Bloomer played ! Lohengrin's wedding march na the uridni party approached the altar. The bride was preceded by Miss Ruth Koewing. Aud Miss Lydia Schinidtke | as bridesmaids; Mrs. Ray M. Coder, hier ' sister, as matron of honor: Marler Ralph Mason as ring bearer. and Miss Virginia Mee Schmidike a lower girl. The bride entered on the arm of her brother-in-law. Ray M. Coder, of Cha-

and lilles of the valley. The matron of honor wore a gown of orchid and carried a bouquet of tea roses. The two bridesmaids wore pale blue taf- feta frocks and carried pink roses. Little Miss Schinidtke. as flower girl. was dressed in a pale green crepe, and Master Ralph Nelson wore white satin and black.


The Rev. Fred Schmidtke, brother of the bridegroom, was best man and Leland Koewing .. Edwin Schmidtke. Albert Mason and Floyd Turk acted #8 ushers. During the ceremony Miss Schmidtke softly played "To a Wild Rose," with woim accompaniment by . 1 Mrs. Roxie Rose.


Mrs. Schmidtke is a. graduate of Baker university and a member of the 1 Phil Mu sorority. The bridegroom 18 pastor of the Vesta Avenue M. E. church and a student at Drury col- lege. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidtke will at. tend a theological seminary where he will continue his studies in the min- Istry and she will take graduate work i in music.
