Dean of Flue Cleaners Knows His Chimneys

L. K. Gibbens, Oldest-"Sweep?" Writes Songs"When Not Chasing Soot; His Hat Holds:15 Cents Worth of Beer-At Pre-Volstead Prices.

L. K. Gibbens, who claims to be the oldest active chimney *sweep in' America, for the past 15 years a picturesque and familiar figure on Springfield streets, sings the songs he wrote himself. as he etrolls.about the city, clad in & sooty .sulf his tall peaked cap upon his head. and Lis brushes on his back.

-

Until recent years he wore scarlet stockings, gay red shirt, and.cordu- roy breeches. He quit wearing them for the very good reason that his wife burned them. .

"She said they were too gaudy." he laughed.

. Bixty-six years old. Mr. albbens has spent his entire life as & chim- ney sweep, and be is familiar with the insides of mora chimneys than Santa Claus himself.

"Do I like my work? Bay, Listen," he said. "I've been a chimney sweep all my life and I wouldn't do anything else."

Mr. Gibbens bears the marks of four severe falls, but he. suya his chimney sweep luck saved him each time.

Once he thought he was dead, but When he heard that the doctor was coming. he jumped. up-and' went home by himself.

He worked up and down the ME- souri river in the old days.

"I learned the business from my grandpa, who was the first chimney sweep in America. He cama, here. from England and was the " best chimney sweep .that ever crawled through a pipe. He wasn't really my grandpa, though, he was my wife's grandpa but I always called hiba mine." The little old man sighed 'for the veteran of the flups, how dead many years.

-

"There's one thing about being ja chimney sweep, you can't afford to get fat .because some of the pipes pre only 18 Inches in diameter, and -

more than, 50 feet long, and let. me tell you something, if you don't know how to breathe juat right, you'll quit breathing. Not everyone, of course, could be a chimney sweep, that lo & scientific, Intellectual chimney sweep, You have to move your arms like this," and he crawled across the floor, to demonstrate just how a scientifto, Intellectual chimney sweep, works himself through a soot ] quea pips.

"I und to work the river towne, up and down on the boats as long is the mother" stayed warm and in the winter when is got cold I laid over some place.

"I have lots of fun with this cap! of mine. One time I bought the I whole thing full of beer for 15'centa. Of course that wie in the, old days. and I think i was in. Bt. Jos.

"Why do I wear this cap?

1

"Well, that's the reason-to make people ask me wby. It's advertising. you see. . .

"One time I fixed up a half-brood Indian in a suit like. mine and pald him to walk the streets to advertise my business. We wandered intp & saloon and everybody looked at us and wondered, and I'took off my cap and asked the bar tender what he'd take to fill it up with beer. He said 15 cents and so he filled . it up and the whole crowd had plenty to drink."

Mr. Gibbens has worked from Ar- kansas to Illinois, and he'll tall you ha's cleaned some dirty chimneys in his day.

"But I believe in. being clean, even in a dirty job." he declared, and I guess I shouldn't say it, but some of the basements I go into are suit a disgrace, But I can't erer losve any dirt around my furnkol."

Life has presented & peculiar mix- ture of adventures to Mr. Gibbens and he has found much pleasure in the world of. chimneys ha'has worked.

985

He sat in his home the other ning, A happy contented wife and a pretty daughter sewing on bite of frilly green something beside him. frankly proud of this unique father. and he told with glee of the times be has outwitted policemen who rep- remanded him for singing his song:

"Chimney sweep, Oh, chimney . tweep.

Don't forget the chimney sweep, He'll sweep your chimneys while you sleep. . Sweep, chimney sweep.

"An'", Mr Gibbons added with a sparkle in his eye. "you can put It in the paper that I couldn't find a wife in this country to mult me and had to send to the old country for one."

Mrs. Gibbens was born In England and came to America when she was a young girl.
