Louis B. Tuck, Our Man Who ...
Maybe there are some left in this town, who can measure up to Louis Tuck's image. But they are few - not just because the town has changed, but because the breed of men has changed in his 81-year lifetime.
Take a little thing like survival : As the Great Fire of 1908 crested through Chelsea, Tuck led his family ahead of the flames which had flattened their home. They carried a few last belongings in a basket. But even these were lost - along with the family dog - when the blazing buildings belched fire too close to the fleeing family.
Or take a little thing like amusement: Imagine racing a heavy iron bike for 100 miles along the bumps and ruts of the old Newbury- port Turnpike - for fun. Tuck and his cronies of years ago made those Century Runs routine events.
Tuck and his contemporaries here stand tallest among their townsfolk because of their deep sense of involvement, of commitment, of accomplishment.
Louis B. Tuck
This is shown by what they achieved in town zoning. Other towns were thinking and talking about protective zoning back in the twenties. But Tuck and another Lynnfield leader, Nelson Todd, pioneered some of the state's first restrictions on land use, to help preserve our residential atmosphere for gen- erations after them.
Tuck's sense of town devotion put him on the School Committee for six years in 1926. (His lead here is being followed now by his daughter, School Committee Chairman Shirley Northrup.)
His good eye for the needs of Lynnfield's future led him to help found the Center Water District and serve as commissioner for nearly 25 years. In the rural thirties it was hard to believe that anything more than farmyard wells ever would be needed here. But Tuck did convince folks of this - twice. After the voters had accepted the District, the first clerk was killed in a car crash en route home from the session, and his records were lost. A second town meeting had to be called to reapprove the District.
In spite of the long service here, Tuck was a relative late-comer. He was born in 1883 in Meriden, Connecticut, a descendant of Provincetown whaling captains, and grew up in Brooklyn where he was a boy soprano in St. Marks Cathedral.
He lived in Auburndale for a time, and then in Chelsea until the Great Fire. It wasn't until 1924 that he moved here, after a Summer vacation at Pillings Pond with his wife, Harriet, and their two children.
It could be that the huge losses of that Great Fire influenced his long career as an insurance special- ist. In 1963 he marked 65 years with Aetna Life and Casualty Company. He had been broker and claims adjustor, and at one time was one of the few agents who held the company's blank check: If you had a claim, Tuck not only settled it, he wrote you a check for the damages, right then. His later years in business were as a partner with Norman Northrup in the Colonial Shopping Center.
Like the man himself, Tuck's list of good works go on and on: Secretary of the first Parent- Teacher Association in Lynnfield; founder and first president of Lynnfield Historical Society ; first pres- ident of Golden Age Club; founder of Lynnfield's Masonic Club, forerunner of the new Lynnfield Lodge, AF&AM.
He can look back to charmed days as president of the first Town Men's Club - charmed because the group met in McCarthy's Enchanted Barn. Some of our senior citizens can still remember the rollicking minstrel shows and holiday parties the club sponsored in old Town Hall.
By years Tuck belongs to the select company of town leaders like Nelson Todd, John Harris and Joseph Smith. By accomplishment he shares a little of the aura which surrounded the great Winston Churchill in Commons last Summer when they said of him: "The oldest amongst us can recall little to compare with him. The younger ones may never see the like again."
