UP AND OVER - Elementary "Phys-Ed".
paration. It is still the student who has the respon- sibility to select his college along with parental and school advice.
To help our students select a school, they are offered vocational counseling through a series of fifteen career conferences. Experienced men and women give some insight into their occupa- tions, the training needed, and the opportunities for advancement. In addition, career assemblies are conducted periodically. The guidance office maintains a file of many hundreds of pamphlets and brochures describing various fields of work, thus enabling the students to investigate their vocational interests at their leisure. Although only a minority of students choose a definite oc- cupation from their high school years, the ex- posure to a great number of areas makes their ultimate decision easier and more intelligent.
The follow-up study of the Class of 1963 verified earlier figures which show approximately 80 percent of the graduates continuing training beyond high school, with almost 50 percent in four-year colleges, and the remainder in technical and secretarial schools, prep schools, and junior colleges. Although most of the students were at- tending institutions in the New England states, nine were enrolled in colleges in other states.
We expect to complete a study of the Class of 1960 by this Summer, as we inaugurate a policy of an annual five-year follow-up.
The guidance office maintains a placement service for students going directly to work after graduation. Our contacts with firms in the area have proved fruitful as potential employment sources. We work jointly with the United States Employment Service in the testing and interview- ing of prospective employees. Studies have shown that our graduates who have gone directly into employment are successful in competing for po- sitions involving responsibility.
Educational counseling, including selection of a program of studies, continues to occupy a great deal of the time of the four counselors. All stu- dents are seen individually by the counselors dui- ing the year for assistance in difficulties encoun- tered in day-to-day work involving study habits, lack of background, and insufficient motivation ; for discussions of educational and vocational plans for the future, and for the various personal prob- lems of the adolescent boy or girl. Parents have an opportunity to discuss their child's work, by appointment, either during the school day or by a scheduled evening appointment.

HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH
BEATRICE W. LYON, R.N.
The health appraisal and health education of Lynnfield students follows the elementary health program as a continuing growth of the young person's awareness of health as he relates it to himself and his fellow man.
Each student receives the same screening programs for hearing, vision, physical examina- tions, tuberculosis and physical growth. In co- operation with the guidance department, adjust- ments in student programs are often made to aid the child with a handicap.
Due to time limitations imposed by the dou- ble sessions, nothing new has been developed in the health program at the secondary level this past year. But once the high school is settled in the new building, a Future Nurses' Club of Amer- ica will be organized.
A Sabin oral polio vaccine "make-up" pro- gram was held, during which 97 students received vaccines. The number of physical examinations given by the school physician for sports reflects the high participation in our athletic programs. This year Dr. Charles A. Worthen, Jr., gave 280 sports physical examinations.
In addition to the health appraisal and health education programs under the direction of the school nurse, she has treated more than 900 first- aid cases this year.
DRIVER EDUCATION ROY E. HARBOUR
The supplementary program of driver edu- cation which was conducted during the past two summers seems to have taken care of the backlog of students which had accumulated for road work. We have added a part-time road instructor, and are now able to take all students as they reach 16 and enroll in the course. I see no need for a Summer program this year. An extra program every other Summer would probably solve any overload problem which may develop.
It is expected that the registration for the Spring term will be slightly greater than the pres- ent enrollment, but the present program should be adequate for the coming year.
The young people of Lynnfield who have taken the driver education course are maintain- ing a better-than-average driving record. As a side-benefit Lynnfield's auto liability insurance rates did not increase as they did in many other communities.

The small increase in the elementary school enrollment reflects the opening of the parochial school with Grades I through IV in 1961, and the addition of one grade per year up to Grade VIII as these children progress through school. It is expected that some of the 237 students now attending the parochial school will be returning to the public schools at the ninth grade level.
