With the point of view that the Lynnfield public library belongs to you, and that your pa- tronage has continued to stimulate its growth, your Board of Library Trustees would like to make a comparison between library service in 1956 as compared to 1961.

While this comparison is made over only a five-year period, the results of expanded service have brought the Lynnfield library into new fo- cus. In 1956 the library was open half as many hours and served less than 30% as many patrons. In 1961 the library purchased over 350% more books and subscribed to twice as many mag- azines. Since 1956 circulation has increased over 350%, and several services have been added. These include a useable card catalog, files of pamphlets and periodicals, more extensive ref- erence materials, children's reading programs, storytelling, and a varied selection of adult read- ing. The Trustees and staff feel that it is gratify- ing to see the public library beginning to take its place as the community's information center giving service to children and adults.
As evidence of this growth and increase in sery- ice, the Lynnfield Library System is now recog- nized among professional library groups as a good example of how a small library with lim- ited means can serve its community and the po- tential and need for further expansion of library service in a growing community. Last summer a group of fifty librarians enrolled in a course
at the University of New Hampshire visited the library to study its facilities.
The youth of the community have been making more extensive use of the reference room. During 1961 there have been times when the seating capacity has been inadequate, and the youth who wanted to use the reference room either waited in turn or left the library unserved. This lack of floor space has left no room for the adult patron who wanted to read in the library or look up some specific information. With the accelerated reading programs in the Lynnfield schools and with the encouragement that many children receive from their parents, the Trustees have noted that the children's browsing area and seating capacity are limited.
Problems of this type prompted the Trustees to request that the Board of Selectmen appoint i a Library Facilities Committee. This Committee will give its report with specific recommenda- tions at the Town Meeting in 1962.
A close liason continues to exist between the schools and the library. During National Library Week the elementary school children participated I in a quiz called "Who's Who in Books"; and in 1 November during Book Week the children used 1 various media for sharing their favorite stories. Attractive displays of children's work were ar- ranged in both libraries under the direction of Mrs. Flewelling and Miss Mary Silke, art super- visor in the elementary schools. The sixth graders have visited the main library for a talk on how to locate the books they need. Many of the reference books that junior-senior higli school students need have been made available in the library, and a section has been reserved for books on the junior-senior high school read- ing lists.
During 1961 over one thousand children have attended the Saturday morning story hours,
68
and one hundred and eighty-two children re- ceived Tom Sawyer Reading Club diplomas. This was the summer reading club sponsored by the Friends and conducted by the library staff. Last spring all of the kindergartens, including one hundred and twenty-seven children, visited the library for a get-acquainted tour.
The head librarian has been trying to serve the adult readers through careful book selection tailored to the literary interests of the adult read- ers, their recreational choices, and their hobbies. Many books have been purchased on a gamut of subjects including photography, golf, art appre- ciation, and investment.
The Board of Trustees are particularly pleased with the professional growth of its staff members. Mrs. Lois Flewelling, head librarian, received her certificate in library science from the University of New Hampshire. Mrs. Virginia Goring and Mrs. Hester Cronburg, members of the cataloging department, are completing a high- ly technical course in cataloging. Mrs. Marjorie Potter and Mrs. Ruth Wiley have been enrolled in a course on library work with children and young adults. Mrs. Mildred Cooper has com- pleted courses given by the Massachusetts De- partment of Education, Division of Library Ex- tension.
The Friends of the Library have continued their activities on behalf of the library. They in- itiated a highly successful Friends of the Library Lecture Series, sponsored an open house and pro- gram during National Library Week, and last
fall conducted the first used-book sale on the Common. The Trustees are grateful for the dil- igent work of the Friends both in the library and for the library.
The annual silver tea and art exhibit was held at the main library in April sponsored by the Center Club, and seasonal flower arrange- ments have been provided on a monthly basis by the Center Garden Club, the Village Garden Club, and the Lynnfield Garden Club.
The Trustees wish to acknowledge their ap- preciation for gifts received by the library from organizations and individuals. Not only has the library profited by these gifts, but the Trustees feel that through gifts and endowments the in- dividual's civic interest is being perpetuated be- fore the community.
Heartfelt appreciation is expressed to Mr. James Y. Lake who retired as library trustee after ten years of faithful service. Mr. Charles Her- lihy was appointed to serve as trustee.
The Trustees believe that the library has an unlimited opportunity for public service. The work that has been done in Lynnfield is note- worthy. However, the community, the staff, and the trustees must continue to be alert to the spe- cific needs of our own community, Lynnfield, if the public library is going to assume its true role as the greatest agency for free education.
