EXCERPTS FROM HISTORICAL SOURCES

The year is 1814. Andrew Mansfield is walking slowly across the Common toward the " Town House" which was built in 1714, just a hundred years before. The building is also known as the "Meeting House", and in the years to follow will be known as the "Chemical House." It will also be used as a School House. This building, the third oldest meeting house still standing in the Commonwealth was er- ected on land owned by John and Nathan Going ( Gowing), was used first as a church, butwhen enlarged in 1782 it was used as a Town Hall down stairs, and religious services were held in the upper part.

Andrew Mansfield, in this year 1814, was among the best dressed men in the town, and this was a special occas- ion-his appearance was good indeed -- his hair cut in the style worn by the Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall, just reached his shoulders, and his sideburns ex- tended well below his ears, his Sunday suit, well fitting.

He is soon met by two other men, all three are Selectmen. They are coming to the Town House to read the document just received from the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts which states that the North Parish of Lynn has been incorporated as the Town of Lynnfield.
