No. 59, and afterward pursued course of study with a view of enter- ing the Naval Academy at Annapolis, At 17, however, at solicitation of his father, who was largely interested in the Central Park Brewery, entered that establishment and served apprenticeship of three years, then entered the U. S. Brewers' Acad. (the first institution of the kind in this country), and in 1881 was its first graduate. After that traveled and filled varions employments in other cities, and in 1ss6 returned, at request of his father to become brewmaster in the brewery of Schmitt & Schwanenflnegel, of


which his father was senior partner; beca !! Jargely interested in 1892 in a brewery in t !... West Indies, of which was gen. mg'r sever years; when he returned to N. Y. City hi- health precluded resumption of his former position as brewmaster, so he went South and managed his tobacco plantation of 600 acres in Florida; also became prop'r and editor of the Eufaula Sun, daily and weekly new .. paper of Eufaula, Ala., and was active in local politics. The death of his father, May 4, 1897, made it necessary for him to return to N. Y. City and take charge of the busi- ness, and he became connected with the brew- ery company as v .- p. and brewmaster, in which capacity was long actively engaged. and became affiliated with the Brewers' B'dl of Trade, Am. Brewing Inst., U. S. Brewers' Ass'n, and the Union Brewers' Ass'n (! which was treas. and a director), Brew- masters' Ass'n and the original Brewers' and Coopers' Benevolent Ass'n, of which suc. ceeded father as treas .. serving seven years (now honorary mem. and trustee ). Now pres., ing'r and director N. Y. and Florida Tobaer, Co. Appt'd 1903 by Mayor Mcclellan comm'r of parks in Borough of Bronx and .served until 1906.
