Officer Royal Hungarian State Railways; b. Székesféjerváw, Hungary, Dec. 15, 1872; s. Ignatius Herczeg (landowner; Knight of the order of His Majesty Fraucis Joseph), and Josefine Hauser. Upon the death of his father in 1897, he was adopted, in accordance with Hungarian laws, by the famous author, Imre Coleman, Baron Jósika, nephew of the great Baron Nicholas Jósika, the family be- ing one of the most illustrious of the noble families of Hungary, with hereditary mem- bership in the Hungarian House of Lords. Prep. ed'n in the elementary classes and gymnasium of his native town; went to Vienna to prepare for the army: grad. from Univ. of Budapest and from Univ. of Ko- lozsvar, receiving from latter the. doctorates of law (LL.D. ) and political science (R.P.D.), in 1902; m. London, England, July 15, 1906, Marguerite C. Rice, who though born in England is a naturalized American citizen. and well known for her extensive charitable and philanthropic activities. Entered the army in 1887 and in 1889 was promoted to a lieutenancy in the Imperial and Royal In- fantry; served by transference in the Im- perial and Royal Cavalry (Hussars), of which the English Duke of Connaught was honorary colonel, and promoted to Ist lieu- tenant; saw service on the Russian frontier, but on account of his father's financial losses was compelled to relinquish his career and retired in 1897. He then adopted literature as a profession until his appointment to the Civil Service of Hungary, and during this time followed his courses of study at night and qualified for the high position in the Hungarian service which he holds. Came to America Oct. 20, 1916, to study the railway systems of the country, and will publish the results of his investigations in book form. Recently elected mem. of the Council of the Civic Forum of N. Y. Was an ardent supporter of the Hungarian Liberal Party, and was nominated for member of Parlia- ment as a supporter of Count Stefan Tisza, late prime minister, who met defeat at the polls in the election of 1905, and though a coalition government was then formed, is still loyal to the principles of that leader. Operatic singer; b. Vienna, Austria-Hun- gary, July 4, 1863; d. Justin Juch (music professor, who was a native of Vienna, but who became a citizen of U. S. at Detroit) and Augusta (Hahn) Juch: born during visit of parents in Vienna; when two years old, parents returned to U. S., making home in N. Y. City; ed. public schools and grad. from Normal School; m. Stamford, Conn., June 25, 1894, Francis L. Wellman, of the N. Y. City Bar. Her father was opposed to her entering professional life and did not encourage her to cultivate her musical tal- ents; pursued musical studies in secret as pupil of Mme. Murio-Celli; made debut in concert in Chickering Hall, at which father was present, scoring complete success; father then encouraged her studies. Engaged by Col. Mapleson, May, 1881, to sing leading soprano roles in London, and made debut at Her Majesty's Grand Italian Opera as "Felina"' in Mignon, June, Iss1; other lead- ing soprano roles of Italian grand opera for three seasons; then refused to renew engage- ment; then shared work of Nilsson and Mat- erna in Wagnerian tour in U. S. under manage- ment of Theodore Thomas, and sang alternate nights with Nilsson as "Elsa" in Lohengrin ; was first artist engaged when the American Opera Co. was formed, and in that company sang six roles and 164 times: then for about five years sang in festivals, symphonic concerts and at head of Emma Juch Grand English Opero Co., until her marriage.
