SOTHERN, Edward Hugh:
Actor; b. New Orleans, La., Dec. 6, 1:59; second son of Edward Askew Sothern, the famous actor; ed. in English schools and academies, and studied for the career of an artist before taking to the stage; m. Philadelphia, Dec. 3, 1896, Virgina Harned, leading woman in his company. Made his first appearance on the stage in a minor part with his father at Abbey's Park The- atre, N. Y. City, in 1879; then went en tour with John McCullough's company. After his father's death (Jan. 20, les1) he played in England, in his brother's company until 1883; then in various productions in the U. S. until 1887, when he took his first leading rôle, that of "Jack Hammerton," in The Highest Bidder which was successful, and his next play in which he starred with his own company, was Lord Chumley, which was a still greater success; has since been one of the most popular American actors: starred in Shakespearean and other classical róles with Julia Marlowe, 1901-07; made a remarkably successful revival of his father's famous part of 'Lord Dundreary" in Tom Taylor's play. SOUSA, John Philip:
Bandmaster, composer, author; b. Washı- ington, D. C., Nov. 6, 1854; s. Antonio and Elizabeth Sousa. At age of 11 he first ap- peared in public as violin soloist; at 15 was teaching harmony; in 1876 became one of first violins in orchestra conducted by Offenbach when latter visited America; later conductor for various theatrical and operatie companies, among them the Church Choir Pinafore Company. In isso appt'd leader of the band of U. S. Marine Corps, the Na- tional Band, serving under Presidents Hayes, Ga.field, Arthur, Cleveland, and Harrison until .Aug. 1, 1592, when resigned from U. S. Service to organize the Sousa Band. which up to Nov. 1, 1908, had made 33 semi- annual tours through U. S., and has fonr times visited, Europe, giving a total of 7,947 concerts in 922 cities and covering 319.295 miles of travel. As music composer has originated a "march"' style that is recog- mized the world over, has productions in this field including, as best known and most popular, the Washington Post. Liberty Bell. Manhattan Beach, High School Cadets, Sem- per Fidelis, The Gladiator. The Stars and Stripes Forever, The Invincible Eagle, Hail to the Spirit of Liberty, Hands Across the Sea, The Charlatan, The Bride-Elect, El Capitan, King Cotton, Imperial Edward.
