While adhering to the highest ideals in this extensive en- terprise, and sparing no outlay in maintain- ing them, it has also been attended by grat- ifying financial success. Gives his personal attention to the enterprises and to the social welfare of the people of Briarcliff Manor: and the story of Mr. Law and his achieve- ments there has been told most interestingly in an article by Andrew Carnegie in The Outlook of May 16. 1908, entitled "The Laird of Briarcliff Manor.' Col. U. S. V .; b. Warsaw, N. Y., May 18, 1834; of New England parentage; lineal des- cendant from Sir Robert Lawrence, Crusa- der, A.D., 1191, under Richard Coeur de Leon, and from John Lawrence, who came with Gor. Winthrop to New England, 1630; ed. in public schools. In 1539 projected, built and operated the Warsaw Gas Light Works, also a foundry and machine works and a mercan- tile establishment in Warsaw, N. Y., until Lincoln's call for 300,000 volunteers, when he turned over his business to others and as- sisted in organizing the 130th N. Y. Vol. Inf., later transferred to cavalry and designated Ist N. Y. Dragoons, which, under Gen. Sher- idan, became famous; placed on detached service, 1862, in commissary and quarter- master's dep't, Peck's Div., 7th Army Corps, under Gen. Dix, later in Sheridan's Cav. Corps, as q. m. U. S. Regular Cav. Brigade ; promoted capt. and a. q. m. U. S. V., and as- signed to 18th Army Corps, of which he soon became chief q. m. with rank of major, and served with the 10th, 18th and 25th Army Corps until the consolidation of the white troops, constituting the 24th, to which he was assigned as chief q. m. and promoted lieut. col. During campaign ending with sur- render of Gen. Lee was appt'd by Gen. Grant chief q. m. Army of the James, and later to receive and make disposition of the property of Lee's Army, and to act as chief q. m. of the U. S. forces at Appomattox Court House, Va .; later assigned to Rich- mond, Va., disposing of surplus publie prop- erty and muster out of troops. Sent by Sec. of War, 1865, to vicinity of the Rocky Moun- tains, transferring the Army property and service from Volunteers to Regulars. In 1866, upon application for muster out, re- turned to Warsaw, and was honorably dis- charged with brevet commissions from the President "for faithful and meritorious ser- vices during the War." Successfully en- gaged in slate mining and manufacturing in Province of Quebec, Canada. and afterward in lumber and planing mill business at But. falo, N. Y. Commissioned commandant Letchworth Rifles, and later ordnance officer Fourth Div., N. G. N. Y. One of organizers Nat. Guard Ass'n of State of N. Y. and 10 successive years mem. Exec. Com. and re- cording sec .; mem. G. A. R., and was one of organizers and several years comd'r Gibbs Post, vice dep't comd'r, mem. Council of Administration in building of the Soldiers' Home in Bath, N. Y., and its transfer to Stato of N. Y. for maintenance; mem. Mil. Order Loyal Legion. He and all of his family are active members of the Congregational Church and Sunday School, Warsaw: delegate to the Nat.
