In 1877 made transcontinental tour, from which grew her work, From Gotham to the Golden Gate; Itza, the Unex- plored Regions of Central America: Rents in Our Clothes; Are We All Deceivers !, etc., besides translating from the French, Span- ish and Italian, and magazine articles on travel and social topics, poems, etc, On Jan. 10, 1885, Mr. Leslie died, leaving entire estab- lishment $300,000 in debt, and sixteen publi- cations in hands of an assignee. After sev- enteen different law suits, triumphed over all obstacles, straightened out affairs of the pub- lications (among which was Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper) and made great finan- cial and literary success. Abont 1902 sold out all her interests, and the name Frank Leslie, which she had legally asumed in 1881 for business purposes, she now abandoned, re- suming the family name of the Baroness de Bazus, a French title which was created in the time of Saint Louis, and which has be- longed to her ancestors for many generations. Y .; represented 13th Dist. of N. Y. in the soth Congress (1899- 1901) ; was leader of Gold Demerais in that Congress: aided in defeating Nicaraguan Canal scheme by making speech in House of Representatives which was used as a test for opposition of Nicaraguan Canal and after- wards for purchase of Panama Canal. Served seven years as public school trustee in 11th Ward, N. Y. City; fourteen years dir- ector United Hebrew Charities, nine years pres. Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Soc. Or- phan Asylum at 150th St. and Broadway, and resigned in favor of Mr. Adolph Lewisohn, "the Copper King," who accepted election as executive head only on condition that Mr. Levy would accept the vice-presidency. Agitated for years a separate institution for Jewish wayward children, which resulted in the Jewish Protectory and Hawthorne School at Hawthorne, Westchester County. Has ag- itated cottages, instead of large buildings, for orphan asylums and kindred child-caring in- stitutions. so that his own institution, the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Soc., has pur- chased at Pleasantville, Westchester County, 200 acres of land, and is about to build one of the best and largest Cottage Plan institu- tions in the world. Visited the Cottage Pian Insitutes in this country and England, Bei- gium, Switzerland and France to stady the subject thoroughly.
