During the great strike at the Carnegie steel mills in isss, took an active and prominent part in bringing about an amicable settlement sat- isfactory to both parties: stumped several States for Presidents Harrison, Mckinley, and Roosevelt; made a study of life insurance, and took a course of lectures and studies un- der the late Charleton T. Lewis, actuary of the Mutual Life Ins. Co. of N. Y. 1 personal friend and great admirer of President Roose- velt, who appt'd him consul to Erzeroum, Turkey, Aug. 6, 1903, and when the consul- ate was transferred to Trebizund was appt'd consul to that place, April 30, 1904. Was known in the consular service as "the Com- mercial Consul," and did much to advance American interests in Turkey; resigned, 1000, to become pres. of the Sullivan-Thorne Real- ty Co. Has traveled extensively and made studies of social and commercial conditions in Russia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, England, Scotland, and Ire- land, and during progress of his travels was made honorary mem. of several B'ds of Trade and Chambers of Commerce. In the 'SOs started one of the first papers in U.
