Be- gan newspaper career as boy in office of Knoxville Chronicle, 1969; in 1576, became ass't foreman in composing room, and soon after ass't business mg'r. Knoxville Daily Tribune; connected with Chattanooga (Tenn.) Dispatch, 1877-78. resigned and engaged in publication of Chattanooga City Directory : appt'd receiver for Chattanooga Dispatch. which had failed. and paid off its entire in- debtedness: bought, July 1, 1578, The Chatta- nooga Times, of which has ever since been publisher. Came to N. Y. City, 1596, and was placed at head of company of which bought the N. Y. Times, of which acquired and re- tains controlling ownership and later elected the Times Bid's, at #2d St. and Broadway.
