Brevet major-gen. U. S. Vol .; b. Oct. 12, 1833. First became identified with the Nat. Guard State of N. Y. in 1834; subsequently joined the Brooklyn City Guard (13th Reg't) and passed through the several grades of non- commissioned rank, membership being term- inated by acceptance of an important mission to South America. At outbreak of Civil War, was among first to volunteer in defense of the Union, enrolling himself as mem. 7tl Reg't; was one of the foremost promoters of 23d Reg't of Brooklyn, when brigade insp. of 11th Brigade; subsequently unanimously elected lieut .- col. 23d Reg't. In Atg., 1862, as lieut .- col., raised 159th Reg't, N. Y. Vols .; mustered into U. S. service in following No- vember as full colonel, and assigned to the Banks Expd'n with his reg't; commanded detachment of General Banks' Armny, pro- tecting right wing of the main body during the feint against Fort Hudson. On April 14, 1863, during battle of Irish Bend, was se- verely wounded while leading a charge. As soon as wounds permitted, returned to active service; participated in the various fights of Red River campaign; appt'd ass't insp .- gen., . Upon construction of the celebrated dam at Alexandria, was given command of all the U. S. forces on the north side of Red River. After the campaign, ordered north with reg't, joining General Grant in operations against Petersburg and Richmond. Organized provisional division of the 19th Army Corps and reenforced General Sheridan in the valley, and participated in all the engagements and battles of that cam- paign; promoted brig.gen. by brevet for conspicuous gallantry and zeal at Fisher's Hili, Winchester and Cedar Creek. At close of this campaign his brigade was sent to sea to reinforce General Sherman, and was placed in charge of works at Savannah, of Fort Pulaski and Tybee; was instrumental in saving the ship Lawrence, in recognition of which N. Y. B'd of Underwriters voted him a service of plate: was made mil. comd'r Dist. of Northern Georgia, with headquarters at Atlanta. Seized and secured to U. S. Gov't Confederate coin and bullion to a very large amount, over seventy thousand bales of cotton, and quartermaster and commissary stores aggregating in valne ten million dol- lars, and government buildings and factories of great value; returned to civil life with the rank of major-general by brevet "for gallant and meritorious services during the war. Subsequently made maj. gen. Second Div.
