Journalist and newspaper advertising ag't; b. in Talbot Co., Md., July 10, 1846; s. Nathaniel and Ann R. (Barnes) Leonard; grad. West River Inst., June 18, 1:63: m. Hagerstown, Md., Dec., 1868, Margaret J. Pierson; one daughter, Leila A. (Mrs. A. C. Woods, of St. Louis, Mo.). Read law with Hon. I. C. W. Powell, at Easton, Md .; ad- mitted to bar, 1866; after practising law a short time, bought a country paper and be- came more interested in newspaper work than in law; with John A. Murray founded Cum- berland (MId.) Times; afterwards associated with J. C. Doublebower in publishing Lafay- ette (Ind.) Dispateh; in 1870, removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, and, with M. D. Hanover and others, founded the Cincinnati Star, which proved a very successful venture, and was consolidated with the Times. under the name of the Times-Star, with the Star management in charge; continued as editor and business mg'r of paper 14 years. Was v .- p. Nat. Asociated Press and of United Press. which succeeded that organization till a while previous to his removal to New York, in 1891; then became publisher weekly edition N. Y.
