S., but declined both nominations and affiliated with the Democratic party, making speeches for Bryan and Steven- son in the campaign of that year: appt'd by Gov. Lind of Minnesota as U. S. Senator. and in Senate made strong opposition to the Philippine policy of the administration. Be- came one of the prominent figures in the ex- ploitation of the Beaumont (Tex.) oil fiehl. and his large interests made necessary his removal to N. Y.
