Has specialized 0.1 diseases of the nose, throat aud ear, in which branches he is recognized as a world- wide authority; was throat surgeon at Van- derbilt Clinic, and Bellevue Hosp. Clinic, 1890-93; laryngologist Met. Coll. of Music since 1890; in private practice since 1eso, now having probably the largest individual practice in N. Y. City, his patients averaging in number between 50 and 60 per day, he having treated $5,000 in the last 10 years. Has always taken deep interest in musical matters, having been tenor singer in the Trinity Coll. Glee Club, afterward first tenor at St. Thomas Ch., N. Y. City, and later sang in church choirs in Hartford, Conn., Brooklyn, and N. Y. City. This interest in music led him to an exhaustive study of the voice and the vocal organs, and he established a principle of hollow space re- sonances which has gained wide and au- thoritative recognition as the nearest to perfect theory of voice production; was the first practical advocate of a regular standard for tone of voice production, by which any voice can be definitely measured and classi- fied; many of the most prominent singers of the country are among his patients. In August, 196S, Mr. Oscar Hammerstein, the well-known impresario, while looking about for a physician of well-known prominence and pronounced ability as a throat specialist, selected Dr. Miller ( who is also a high. class singer and musician), to pass upon the throats and vocal chords of his artists. The N. Y. American of Aug. 30. 190S, in a whole page article, quoted Mr. Hammerstein as saying: "'My innovation means a revo- lution in voice-training methods that ulti- mately will benefit every yonng singer in this country. Through the direct advantage gained by applicants for. positions in my chorus, other singers all over the country will benefit by personal knowledge of the anatomical and scientific aspect of their in- strument and their art." Dr. Miller, in a paper written in 1906. for the Frankel Festschrift, and read before the Am. Laryn- gological, Rhinological and Otological Soc .. at Kansas City. proposed a new theory of the origin of nodules from personal observation of 231 cases, and the first scientific investi- gations conducted at the New Surgical Labor- atory. Coll. Phys. and Surg., were a series of original experiments, which confirmed his theory. Ile collaborated with Dr. James P. MCEvoy and Prof. J. E. Weeks on .1 Compend on Nose, Throat and Far Diseases, 1892, and numerons other papers on the Voice and the .Vocal Organs.
