Financier: b. in Westchester Co., N. Y., Sept. 5, 1825; fifth son of James Mills: ed. N. Salem Acad. and Mount Pleasant Acad., Sing Sing; at age of 17 secured clerkship in New York City. In 1817, went to Buffalo, and was appointed cashier Merchants' Bank of Erie County; went to San Francisco, 1849; engaged in trade with the mining dis- tricts; later settled in Sacramento, and en- gaged in general mercantile business, while also buying gold dust and dealing in ex- change on N. Y. City; in Nov .. 1519, closed out his business and returned to Buffalo, where disposed of his interests in the East, returning to Sacramento again, and found- ing there the house of D. O.
