STARIN. John Henry:


Merchant; b. Sammonsville, N. Y., Aug. 27. 1$25; ed. Esperance Aead. in Schoharie Co., and vegan the study of medicine, but later en- tered his brother's drug store at Fultonville, N. Y., as clerk until 1856, when removed to N. Y. City and established a business in medicine and toilet articles; later embarked in the transportation business, then a poorly developed interest, and established a general freight agency which was very successful. and which increased enormously during the Civil War period, having so organized his business that he was able to furnish trans- portation for troops and war material at less cost and with quicker despatch than the Gov- ernment could do it and at the end of the war had an extensive system of railroad and steamboat connections, and has ever since conducted the business, now being at the head of the Starin City, River and Harbor Trans- portation Lines, owning freight lines on the North and East Rivers, large fleets of tugs. propellers, lighters, car boats, excursion and pleasure boats, grain boats and floating ele- vators, also freight connections with all the railroads that come to the rivers surrounding N. Y. City; also owning dry docks and freight depots, and having offices at many points along the wharf region of the city. Re- publican ; was postmaster of Fultonville. I-4S 52, elected 1576 and reelected lors mem. Con- gress from 20th N. Y. Dist .. but declined further nomination. Mem. N. Y. Chamber of Commerce since 1574. Pres. Saratoga Monu- ment Ass'u, Isso: secured from Congress $30,- 000 for the project, added a large donation of his own, and secured others, and as a con- sequence the memorial was erected.
