Co. and di- rector in several others; now gen. solicitoor of Long Island R. R. and its associate com- panies. Was several years a sachem of Tammany Hall and personal counsel of late John Kelly after latter had wrested its control from Tweed: counsel for Tammany Hall in its prosecation of Commissioner Davenport for his wholesale arrests of nat- uralized citizens, and succeeded in havin his acts declared illegal. Enlisted in car- alry company at outbreak of Civil War, ant after it was disbanded, enlisted and serv. 1 1 62-63 in 22d N. Y. N. G. Rez't, in which Icame a captain. Afterward prominent in National Guard and became interested in the. matter of systematic rifle practice in Nat.
