mon schools; began teaching school at 16 years of age; while teaching school continued study, taking Regents' examinations and received Regents' Academic Diploma from Corning Free Academy, without having ever attended a high school a day; ad- vanced from 3d grade certificate teacher to 2d, then to Ist and in 1599 received a life Teacher's State Certificate, 556 candidates taking examination and most of them col- lage graduates, and only 56 passing. Can- didate for nomination of school comm'r, Steuben County, 1899, was declared nomi- nated on 35th ballot and in recount was counted out by one vote. Began to study law with Judge Gabriel L. Smith at Elmira, 1900; afterward studied with Hon. Chas. H. Knipp and finished with Samuel D. ulls; admitted to bar Nov., 1903, and at once opened an office in Elmira, where has since practised law.
