N., during bombardment of Fort Fisher. Dec. 21, 1564, the ship to which he was at- tached was struck with a 10-inch Columbia. considerably below the water-line; noticing that no effort was being made by the deck officers to plug the hole, he and another eng'r proposed to the comd'g officer that they would do it, and at their request the starboard battery was run over to the port side so as to list the ship and bring the hole as near as possible to the surface and to the boat's crew. Personally plugged the hole, although the plugs on board were made for the guns of Revolutionary times and were only 6 inches in diameter, therefore had to wrap a blanket around in order to fit the hole as he drove the plug in with a sledge; all this time the shots from the fort were striking all around the party. and the ship was rapidly sinking; one boiler had been perforated by the shot. but there was steam enough in the boiler to run a donkey engine, and keep the pumps at work until the ship was soon after relieved from the water. and went into action the next day.
